We've been patients of Dr Cunningham for five years, ever since we moved down from Los Angeles. The care from him and his staff has been excellent. Oh, there's been the occasional billing snafu, but these are rectified quickly. Dr. Cunningham himself is a great dentist, personable and caring. He even met me at the office at 6:30 am once to take care of a problem I was having. The building where his office is located has been undergoing reconstruction/renovation for over two years, but it looks like it'll wrap up soon. His new office space is quite nice and laid out very well. The office is observing all ADA COVID protocols, and there are open air waiting chairs for anyone who doesn't want to sit in the waiting room. Being La Jolla, parking can be an issue, but there is a shared below ground car park in the building that has reopened. read more

I'd never thought that a visit to this dental place could became such a nightmare. The same day that I came home from a teeth cleaning, I couldn't chew, couldn't eat. I couldn't bite cake, bread and of course couldn't eat any protein due to the pain from my gum caused by Dr. Grey Cunningam's office. The pain got so bad that I couldn't concentrate on anything and I had to take a pain relief. When I arrived at his dental place at the appointment time, his front desk seems somewhat confused. The check-in process was very slow, I waited for about 30 minutes at their tiny "lobby" area. Since I moved during the pandemic, I haven't seen a dentist for a while. I told myself, maybe it is a new patient thing that makes the check-in so slow. But turned out that is not the case, the front desk lady has to text her co-work who is working from home about everything single question. Finally I got seated and since I am a new patient, they decided to take x-ray of my teeth. Fair enough. However, the tool they used to put into my mouth is much bigger and heavier compare to the ones my old dental place used. It was hard to bite it and keep still to take a x-ray. An outdated tool like this should've raised alert, but I was too naive. Then the doctor came in, offered to do an exam. After he heard that I haven't seen a dentist for a while due to the pandemic, he started approach my teeth and my gum very aggressively. He told the hygienist that I will need not just one but two cleans. The way he does the exam is that he used his tool to poke hard with the pointy, almost needle alike part, straight on my teeth and gum. After he finished his exam, the hygienist came in. At that point, I think my gum was bleeding. The hygienist was no gentle either. During the cleaning, she also try to scare me with other concerns about my teeth. After I told her that I am not interested in a second cleaning. She got more aggressive. By the time she finished teeth cleaning, my teeth hurts, my gum hurts, my jaw hurts. I am writing this experience to share with you, so that you don't have to go home with sore teeth like me. read more

Dr. Grey Cunningham does not mince words, but he does do the most gentle, painless, and caring dentistry. Plus, he went out of his way to accomodate my schedule and make sure I could get the work done as quickly as possible. I am one of those dental phoebics. I needed extensive work, and the only thing that really hurt was my pocketbook (due to my own neglect). Incredible experience! Cannot recommend Dr. Cunningham and his staff enough. I don't know where to begin!! I had insurance complications and his front office handled it completely on their own (on hold with the company for 2 hours!) I didn't have to do anything...That never happens in healthcare! Then they helped me get in early for a root canal that was COMPLETELY PAIN FREE. Seriously, I left the office and went to work and totally forgot I even had the procedure. BEST DENTIST EVER! I have a lot of anxiety when it comes to even getting a dental cleaning and the staff and Dr. Cunningham were beyond amazing! After knocking 3 of my front teeth sideways and back due to a fall, Dr. Cunningham expertly and patiently was able to reposition them back into place and made sure to fine tune with filing and x-rays to restore my bite and leave my teeth even and smooth despite having broken off part of one tooth. I arrived at his office bleeding and traumatized and left reassured and confident that everything will be ok. Can I give this place 10 stars, please?!? I have been going here for a few years now and I absolutely love this dentist's office. Is it weird to love going to the dentist? Anyway, like I said, Dr. Cunningham has been my primary dentist for a few years now (maybe 4 or 5). I went through a slew of slimy dentists in San Diego before I found this office. Other offices were always recommending work that I didn't need. It was different here. The office was wonderful right off the bat. I have referred multiple friends to this office and they all say the same thing-They love it here! APPOINTMENTS: It's easy to get an appointment and Amanda (who is so wonderful, by the way) will ALWAYS squeeze you in if it's a dental emergency. I used to have a crazy work schedule and she would always help me out and squeeze me in last minute for my cleanings. Wait time? Forget about it. They always see you right at or within minutes of your scheduled appointment. DENTIST: Dr. Cunningham is pleasant and a great dentist. Fillings are always painless and quick. In addition to my regular dental visits, I've also had some cosmetic work done here. I had invisilign done about 2 years ago and I am sooooo pleased with the results! When it came time for me to get invisilign, I did not even shop around for prices. Not worth it. I trust Dr. Cunningham and figured I didn't want to take my chances to try and hunt for a bargain. HYGIENE: As for the hygenists, I can't name any in specific one that is the best because they are all great! Friendly, gentle and quick. Ok, so you get the point. I love this place!! 10 Stars!! Highly recommend. When I go there I feel as though I am family. The pain is minimal, Dr. Cunningham even puts a topical on your gums prior to giving you a shot. I had a few root canals performed at this office over the years and I couldn't be more satisfied. I moved up to Orange County and found a new dentist up here, he performed a root canal. All dentists are in the business of selling - lawyers might have a bad rep, but "you have it for life periodontal disease" is the latest way for dentists to buy their second Porche...this place is no different in that sense (not surprised to see Richard's post about the "deep cleaning upsell" - I think you are going to get that wherever you go, did not happen to me here, but I got it at my previous dentist), but they do EXCELLENT work. I had a cleaning, root canal (done PERFECTLY by a specialist at an office they referred me to, the final x-ray was practically art the drill lines were so perfect), root canal cap, and a couple fillings. I'd give them five stars, except I'm taking one away because I don't think they are great at explaining what is involved in each procedure. Perhaps they don't want to freak you out? Whatever the reason, visual aides or descriptions you can take home and think about when you aren't jacked up on novocaine or freaked out by drilling noises would help; bill summaries don't really do the job. However, I have NO complaints about their dental services - excellent work by everyone involved, you leave feeling confident it was done with as little pain as possible, done right and done to last. read more

So far not impressed. I called to make an appt to find out that they will only do the exam and xrays on the first visit. I have to come back a different day for a cleaning. ??? I've been going to dentists for at least 35 years now and have never had to come back a different day for a cleaning. Annoying at best, but mostly inconvenient. When I was referred to Dr. Cunningham my mouth was a mess. I had just seen a dentist who told me that my back tooth had an infection, which I already knew , and not only that one but the one next to it would need to be pulled!! My girlfriend told me to see Dr. Cunningham and he was able to save one of my teeth by doing a root canal and the one that was to far gone he pulled the root and performed a bone graft. I have never been more satisfied by a dentist than I have been since I've been under his care for these past few months. He is the real deal. His staff is amazing and super friendly! He cares about his patients and he is great at what he does! I highly recommend him and his office if you are looking for an amazing dentist!! Highly recommended dentist for all your needs, special or routine. Just had my cleaning today but has been a busy month. Brought my 100 year old Mom in from Hawaii to correct issues from shoddy bridge work done in Hawaii. I have been going to Dr Cunningham for several years after having had some terrible experiences with other dentists. He has corrected several fairly significant dental issues with excellent results. In particular, I had an accident that knocked out several front teeth. He saw me quickly (important when you are already traumatized by the accident and are missing your front teeth!!), was very compassionate and I could not be more pleased with the crowns that were made. My first encounter with Dr. Cunningham's office was as a referral from a dentist who performed emergency procedures on me. I'll admit, due to run ins with other dentists I was none too comfortable with finding a new dentist but I knew I required the service or would be looking at many more emergency procedures. Amanda, the office guru, secretary, counselor, insurance specialist etc, was quick to address my concerns and assured me they would look out for my best interest as well as help me through the paranoia I felt against dentists. They arranged right away for a cleaning, x-rays and assessment in which Amanda spelled out everything they thought would be needed to get my mouth back in shape. She assured me they could stay within my budget and worked out all the insurance options while still providing me with what needed to be done to save my teeth. They got me in right away for my second appointment and while I was beyond nervous, the staff treated me like family. The assistants kept me apprised of everything they would be doing and Dr. Cunningham began the procedures with a calm sympathetic approach. He was very good about informing me what he was doing and when I started to feel anything he was quick to make sure I was brought back to a comfort level. In all the subsequent visits Dr. Cunningham and his staff were consistently patient and accommodating. At least 5 root canals and many more fillings later, I am glad to say both the staff and I survived and I cannot recommend them enough. They were ALL professional and courteous! I highly endorse them and encourage you to call even if it's just for a cleaning and checkup. I have found my permanent dentist!!! read more

Make sure you get Cunningham and not the lady dentist. She didn't seem as experienced and the drill slipped and cut my mouth. The appointment took a long time because she kept having to stop because she couldn't see from all the blood. Also, be aware of of their 48 HOUR CANCELLATION POLICY because they don't hesitate to charge you SIXTY DOLLARS even if you can't make it due to an emergency. I was a patient for about 2 years and was seriously considering getting Invisalign treatment there, but I will go elsewhere after getting a bill in the mail for cancelling the appointment. read more

First my wife had a tooth worked on that was supposed to save the tooth. Not! She is now getting an implant. Then I went in for a cleaning and was told that i needed deep cleaning because most of my numbers (where they probe between the teeth and the gums) were 4+. Besides being one of the most painful experiences I ever had at a dentist, the funny thing is that I just had my teeth examined and cleaned three months ago (and only had 2-3 gum numbers). I never experienced pain from that probing before. I got the feeling the instrument was being jammed down to get higher numbers so I'd go for the deep cleaning. Then when all this was done the staff told me that Dr. Cunningham doesn't like a patient seeing more than one dentist (another funny thing is that I have never seen Dr. Cunningham, only his associate). This is, by far, the best dental office I have found that takes our Safeguard HMO plan. I really like and appreciate my hygienist. I have had a good experience with scheduling appointments that are convenient. Worst service I've ever had. I scheduled a cleaning as they were near by home and part of my insurance plan. I arrived and was ushered into the x-ray room. I declined, said I was here for a cleaning. I was told I had to get x-rays first or wait for them to contact my last dentist to send them over. The polite assistant convinced me getting x-rays would be quick so I agreed. After, the dentist looked at my mouth and immediately tried to upgrade me on future services. I have next to perfect teeth so this was ridiculous! I was then ushered out with no cleaning. I was told they always do x-rays first & the cleaning is a separate appointment. So frustrating! They wouldn't clean my teeth. Told me to make another appointment. Poor communication combined with too much focus on selling me anything and everything, won't be back. I called for a cleaning as a new patient, but was told when I got there that I wouldn't be getting a cleaning that day, just x-rays and a consult, frustrating. Then after some fast-talk from the dentist I was asked to commit, with a deposit!, to three more sessions that would cost me almost $1000. I've since gone to a different dentist and got the cleaning I needed in one visit at no cost to me as it was covered by my insurance (much of the suggested services here were not). Only positive was friendly and helpful staff (other than initial miscommunication on not getting a cleaning first visit). I'm so so happy to have found these dentists. I have seen both Dr. Johnson and Dr. Cunningham, and they are seriously the best. They make you feel very comfortable. They explain everything they did to me, and even showed me close up pictures of the small problems parts on my teeth and how they were going to fix them. The assistants and receptionists are incredibly nice, and pretty funny too. I really love this place. I can't say enough great things about the staff here. Five stars isn't enough to rate them. I used to hate going to the dentist, but I have now been going here for a few years and love it. Dr. Cunningham & Dr. Ismaj are excellent and very reasonable and personable. There receptionists- Andrea & Amanda, are more than just receptionist. They treat you like family and are always on top of convenient scheduling and assisting with insurance claims or flex spending. I love my hygenist Trish too. It's like going to see a friend. She customizes my cleaning and always explains & educates me on the newest techniques/products. I just started using Yelp and think it's a great resource. This is my first review because I was so disgusted by how I was treated by this office that I felt I needed to let others know. I spent weeks on the phone trying to book an appointment because our family had just switched over health insurance carriers. I was told they would work with me on faxing over the appropriate documentation from our insurance carrier stating that Dr. Cunningham was our provider so that my daughter could keep her appointment. However when I called to send them the information, they informed me they already cancelled my appointment. I explained that I had my insurance carrier provide me with all the documentation they needed, but I was told I would have to wait a month for them to receive their roster with us added as patients and THEN I could book an appointment which would be a few weeks out. The front desk was rude and condescending which is unfortunate because we never got to meet the dentist. read more
