If anything I walk away a little more aware of the human psyche and more fragile as the shows that tend to find their rightful home at La Boite pull the heart strings, show us a raw and ugly side of humanity in a truly artful way and leave you questioning (as all good art should). They evoke emotion in all the right places. I've seen productions from student performances to bigger named David Berthold-led shows. Some of my most memorable theatre performances have been at La Boite (Stockholm Syndrome, Les Dangerous Liaisons and I Love You, Bro to name but a few). And although the quality of productions are worth the price tag, Under 30s will often get tickets for $22-$26, which if you ask me, is a steal!

Last year, La Boite Theatre Company set up an Indie program to give local artists with a small budget and few resources the opportunity to put independent theatre on the stage. I saw two of the four productions put on last year, and they were both sensational. One, 'The Harbinger', was so good in fact, that it's returning in 2012 as a more fleshed out bigger production! La Boite Indie is hosting five plays this year (last year there were four) due to last year's popularity. The Indie productions usually only cost around $20. The sets, because of low budgets are often ingenious creations (one show I saw had a set entirely made out of milk crates). The bar they had set up for the Indie productions last year was simple and gorgeous. They had bean bags littered over the ground with low lying tables, amid tall wooden bar stools. There was a cute corner bar, where a girl wearing pig tails and long stockings poured red wine out of a carafe and offered pretzels to patrons. Please check the website for more information, but I can tell you this for nought- if the Indie program is even half as good as it was last year, you're in for a real theatre treat that won't cost you the world. Forget QPAC, go and support homegrown, independent theatre.
