The Big Daddy of 'alternative' shops, selling 'alternative' clothing and blasting 'alternative' music. Shop here if you're an individual, if you're quirky, Indie, even Gothic, if you love music...the list goes on. None of these make any sense to me. Cult is a fabulous name for it though because by dressing like one of their manequins you become part of a huge Cult cult, the individual who thinks they're being dead different when really they just look the same as every other Emo. I can't be bothered with it, although to give them their due, they do some pretty dresses and cool hoodies, but they're so bloody expensive. Have these kids never heard of Primark? So-so. I won't go on about it (what do you mean I already have?) but it's not a real favourite of mine.

From business website.

I'm just going to come out and say it - I do not see the point of this shop. More over, I simply cannto see why it has such a huge following and seemingly impressive reputation. Yeah, I'll give it to you that it looks cool - whoever does the window displays can take a small selection of clothes and a huge pile of junk and make it into a window display that rivals the masterpieces of any artist. The inside is like a 'whats-what-of-cool-things-designed-to-make-you-like-us' and thats again just the displays which Cult so desperatly rely on to look cool. Truthfully, if you go beyond the shallow looks - you see what Cult really is. A generic, and vastly over priced shop of quasi-designer clothes. You can get most of this stuff anywhere else, and for quite a bit cheaper. I may sound a bit bitter, but I cant stand shops like this.

Not too keen on this place. Pricing is way too high considering the quality of the material used to make the clothes. The jeans especially!

Dick's Edinburgh - This is the Jamieson's Shetland wool fair isle jumper I purchased.

I had it in mind to buy myself a fair isle jumper (in the U.S. we'd call it a pullover sweater)…read moreduring our trip to Scotland. I did some online research before we left home and learned that to be considered authentic, one of the requirements is that it be fashioned from Shetland wool, as opposed to cashmere, merino, or lambs wool. I found a very useful thread on Reddit that listed several reputable shops in Edinburgh (our base of operations while in Scotland), including this warning: "Whatever you do, don't go into any of the tat shops." Of course, then I had to ask Google what a "tat shop" was. In the United States, my guess would have been a tattoo parlor, but that didn't make sense. A "tat shop" is a souvenir store. I made some phone calls when we got to Edinburgh. Many stores in the UK are closed on either Monday/Tuesday or Tuesday/Wednesday, so that narrowed our choices. Other stores had no fair isle jumpers in stock. Still, I was undeterred and kept calling around. After only two or three calls, I reached Dicks Edinburgh and was told that they did have exactly what I was seeking. A few hours later, after we had toured Edinburgh Castle, we hopped into a cab and went straight there. My husband and I were the only customers, and the entire staff (two women and a man) were collectively attentive to us. It took me only a few minutes to decide on the perfect jumper. It was a lovely experience from start to finish. Dicks Edinburgh is clearly a quality clothing store, and I would not hesitate to shop there again.

This store stocks a huge amount of suits in every colour imaginable. As well as some other smart clothes, like your tweed coat yah. The service was fantastic, there are few shops which offer such a high standard of service. The shop assistant was very polite and listened to what my dad was looking for and came up with a tonne of options. He gave advice and was really helpful. We settled on the second suit my Dad tried, and the best thing is they alter for free! This was the Monday and the guy said we could pick up the altered suit on Saturday. As my Dad doesn't live in Edinburgh I said I would pick it up but it would be two weeks later as I was going on holiday on Saturday. Not a problem, he organised the suit to be ready for the Wednesday. My brothers picked up their suits from another branch of Slaters and they were just as good.

My brother got his suit for his school leavers dance from Slaters and many of my friends have recently had to invest in a suit for Grad Balls and Slaters seems to be the most popular option. It also seems like the most wallet friendly option as a friend of mine got his suit for £80, I didn't realise you could get suits at such a bargain price! Prices range from under £100 to £200+ so it depends how flush you're feeling I guess. You don't have to go all out and buy a suit or kilt you can also hire them if you don't really need them all that much, just don't get carried away with the red wine.

Okay so when tourists come to Edinburgh they love to buy tartan in any shape or form which means…read morethere is an abundance of tourist shops in the city. I normally take visitors to this store purely because its less annoying than the rest of the tourist tat shops. You know the ones I mean, the shops that blast bagpipe music out into the street all day and have See You Jimmy hats hanging off the window. For some reason these shops really annoy the locals. Thankfully Romanes and Paterson is not like that. Romanes and Paterson has been around since the 1860's, which is a good enough reason alone to support a historic business. The shop stocks cashmere, kilts, woolen goods, tartan gifts, shortbread, Edinburgh Castle Rock and whatever else it is tourists in Scotland like to buy. It really is ideal for tourists coming to Scotland who wish to purchase their souvenirs to take back home. Its much better than all those shops previously mention which just stock complete tat. There is also a cafe in the store which does a good afternoon tea and is waiter service. The only waiter service cafe on Princes Street I'm told, I guess that is probably true in a world full of Costas and Starbucks.

Ahem. My friend bought her grandmother one of those fantastic post cards of sexy scottish men wearing nothing but kilts (and some even flashing some bum!). I've been far more decent, and managed to get some good deals on a cashmere sweater and some playing cards for my dad. This store is quite classy for a souvenir store, and I certainly don't feel too much shame buying presents there.
