We stayed at the Sun for a weekend in November, and were more than pleased with our visit. Each morning began with a large and delicious free breakfast, included with lodging. The hotel room was nothing short of perfect - a cozy space with a large bed, rustic stone walls, and scenic windows. The staff were friendly and reliable - Gabby had our accomodations ready when we arrived, and we were greeted by managers Alex and Vita, who made the Sun feel very welcoming. Bartenders John and Nathan were very friendly and remarkably knowledgable about the 60+ gins (and therefore 60+ recommended gin cocktails) available in the pub, and also had fantastic recommendations for local hikes and sightseeing. And on Friday night, live music by the talented Jon Sibley accompanied a wonderful dinner. The menu selection was diverse and the food itself was excellent. If you're planning on visiting the Lake District anytime soon, the Sun Inn is absolutely the place to stay!

The pub has a bar area and a restaurant area - we only ever went into the bar as you could eat int here and it was really cosy (dogs are also allowed!). The staff were incredibly friendly and chatty (lets face it, Yorkshire, particularly North Yorkshire folk are possibly the most friendly on the planet - i challenge you to disprove this!). The food was INCREDIBLE. Nothing fancy pants, just really good food, VERY big portions (trust me on this, you dont need three courses - choose your weapon of starter or dessert to go alongside your main - we made the mistake one night and 1) couldnt eat it all and 2)pretty much rolled home). We spent an evening in the pub, had a meal and then sat playing card games - we felt incredibly welcome. So welcome that we ended up visiting three times in a week long holiday. All the meat was really tender and succulent, the lamb in particular had great flavor, the variety of accouterments alongside added texture and depth to the dish. The meal was hearty and homey, just how you want English pub food to be. Finished with a lush sticky toffee pudding, very rich. "Very treacley," apparently, as someone said, and I thought it was lovely with ice cream. Four of us split it, which was enough for us as the main courses are quite filling. It's located on the country road about a mile south from the visitors' centre so is super convenient and thankfully wasn't too busy so we could park on their small car park too. The building is a former farmhouse from the 16th century, so expect a couple of low ceiling beams, working fireplaces and whitewashed walls. There's plenty of character here. The menu is mainly Great British fare, with their selection of pies being the most tempting. The Wild Game Pie (venison, pheasant, rabbit, juniper berry and red wine) was filled to the brim and served with mash and vegetables. It was good, but I thought the portion size was a tad small for the price (£12.50). Opt for fries instead of mash if you have an appetite. All of the beers served are brewed within 20 miles of the pub apparently. Get yourself a Cumbrian Legendary Ales' Loweswater Gold as a treat after your woodland trek - it's a particularly lovely pint! They have a beer garden out the back if the weather permits; all round a decent spot for lunch. Tip: as you'd probably expect in this neck of the woods, the pub is dog friendly.
