It seems Horwich is definitely becoming the place to be for tasty treats and great food! Evidence…read moreof this can be seen in the latest business to open on Winter Hey Lane: CHILL @ The Cowshed. An ice cream parlour! A lot of work was put into the fixing up of this building, which used to be a butcher shop. The exterior was sandblasted, but the interior keeps the same exposed wall and stone flagged floor, which gives a lovely rustic effect. I'd describe the effect they're going for as seaside vintage shabby-chic, and it works well, complete with rough boards and mismatched china. Its location is excellent, being next door to a bank and a car park. Both handy things for such a visit! Inside, the cosy space has several tables and chairs, around a central column, behind which is the main counter, which displays a delicious array of tempting ice creams, which (as the lady behind the counter is quick to tell us) we're welcome to taste the flavours of to get us in the mood for more! A most coherent and agreeable suggestion! We were told that a new flavour had just come in, blackcurrant and liquorice, and told that a sample would be brought for us to try. Fab! There is a blackboard proudly listing the 22 flavours that the parlour stock, and another blackboard mentioning the days food options should you feel peckish. We're also told the soup of the day. This is good really, it means that in the depths of winter, CHILL will have other options as well as ice cream. I quite fancied something foody first, so went for good and simple cheese on toast and a cup of tea. I asked if I could also have ham on my toast and was told that wouldn't be a problem. It was nice to be asked what type of bread I'd like to. Although initially served open-faced as a classic cheese on toast, a member of staff brought out an extra slice of toast, which we thought was kind and thoughtful. It was hot and tasty, and my tea was served in a dainty teapot with traditional cup and saucer. Very civil. This reminded me a bit of Delicieux, and with good reason. Debbie Halls-Evans, the owner of the former Delicieux is seemingly on-board helping out here and there, loaning chairs and the such, and is soon to open a pop-up restaurant located within the parlour itself, in an adjoining room. After my lunch, I had a sample taste of a few flavours (Turkish delight, lemon meringue and the amazing wild cherry), but settled on white chocolate and raspberry flavour. The ice creams are availible in tubs at £1 a scoop, or in cones varying from classic wafer cones, to waffle cones, coloured cones, and chocolate-dipped cones! This is pretty good value considering the price a lot of places charge for ice cream. It also goes without saying that it was delicious! After such a tasty and good value visit, and with such friendly and pleasant staff, I will most definitely be returning to CHILL, and I look forward to seeing how they progress and grow. I have at least another 21 visits planned to try all of the flavours! They don't have a big internet presence currently, which in the age of Twitter and Facebook can make things tricky, but they have a placeholder on their website, so I have no doubt that we have more in store from them!

Delighted because Ice Cream…read moredoesn't get better than Holdens yet saddened because it's April and I should be able to eat Ice Cream every day out in the sun by now and it's bloody raining.. Ahhh the good old north west ey! Anyhow, back to this creamy genius: Holdens Ice Cream is a staple of any Bolton childhood and it remains my favourite ice cream to this day at the grand old age of 24. I can still remember the days when my grandma would take me up to Edgworth on a summers day to eat gallons of Ice Cream and play on the park for what seemed like 10 minutes but likely was closer to 5 hours - it literally is a taste of summer for me! In recent years, the family of the inventor have rebranded the Ice Cream and started to introduce a whole range of flavours where previously it was just vanilla. You can get all sorts, like pistachio, strawberry and about 15 other fruity combinations, but for me its always the original, and it always will be! If you're in these parts for a nice walk or watching the local football/cricket - definitely brave the queues and grab yourself some of the best homemade Ice Cream around!

I am 45 now and Holdens would be a place I would frequently visit with my mum and then stepdad 30 years ago. In my former years I have often tried new ice creams in search of that flavour and nothing comes close,to me the vanilla is unique and something I could never get enough of, I would HIGHLY recommend to any ice cream connoisseur

TL;DR - An ice cream legend, still going strong…read more I grew up in Chorley, and everyone there knows Frederick's Ice Cream. As you drive in on the A6 from the south you'll pass the distinctive sign, but if there's a hint of sun in the sky you'll know you're getting close because the road will be lined with cars and there will probably be a queue snaking down the road. Yes, parking is basically non-existent so either walk or pull up on the road side. The parlour itself is fairly small with seating for about 20 people inside, plus some more seating outside (but it's on a busy road so not too scenic!). However, if you go down the side of the business, the pathway goes down to the canalside where they have some additional seating, and you have access to the wonderful canalside walks of the Leeds Liverpool canal. The variety of flavours is huge... today Sparky had a scoop of pistachio and a scoop of cherry whilst I went for a double scoop of nutella and peanut. Delicious, hugely satisfying and great value for money. There are far more exotic flavours though - I was tempted by the Jammy Dodger, and most of the kids there seemed to be desperate for the bubblegum flavour which I think was the blue ice cream everyone seemed to be eating. Frederick's is a bit of a Chorley landmark and legend combined, still going strong and well worth a visit. Who would have thought the A6 through Chorley would have such a treasure?

I thought the setting was wonderful it was possible to see for miles around. I was pleasently surprised how much this place had to offer as if all that icecream and cakes wasn't enough for you there is also animals which includes donkeys, rabbits, goats, geese, and of course cows and a playground and mini golf. Yes there is mini golf with the most amazing views of West Yorkshire The icecream was simply delicious I have to admit it was difficult to decide from all the yummy flavours 24 in total lucky that it is possible to have scoops of different ones together in one tub. Also they sell large tubs to take away and store in your freezer. It is possible to eat inside the cafe or the is seating outside which is lovely on a nice day. We went on a saturday afternoon and it was busy this little spot seems very popular. Parking was free I suggest visiting the website for a map and details of how to find the place.

Oh, Lordy. The…read moretraffic was awful, and I'd spotted this place on the way to work, so it was just too tempting on a hot day on the way home. It's adorable- all big trees and cobbles, and the most enormous goat I've ever seen in my life. Everything was planted up pretty, and little old guys scooting up on their mopeds for a scoop. I'm 99% sure this is the best ice cream in the land. You can choose from so many flavours, I had fanuttytastic and carrot cake, the latter was particularly exceptional, but I was also tempted by the white mountain, the banana, the Turkish delight, the sloe and damson gin, the elderflower and rhubarb and the maple and walnut- so I'll just have to come back, won't I?

ERMAHGERD this ice cream is amazing!…read more Seriously, Snugbury's is a one of a kind place. A small little farm-style set up with an onsite creamery and a shop selling no less than fourty, YES - FOUR-ZERO - flavours of ice cream and frozen yogurt. Once you've made your decision you can plonk yourself on the numerous benches or prostrate on the garden lawn (if you overdo it on the cream) and there is also a short country walk if you'd prefer to burn off some of your sugar intake. Every flavour is churned on site and given a suitably cheeky name (think B&J pre-Unilever). They also have seasonal limited editions like Summer Pimms and have previously partnered with a local Cheshire bakery for an apple pie ensemble (with whole apple pie churned into it!). In the interest of research (and gluttony) I opted for the double scoop, one of 'Driving me Cherries', a rich chocolatey flavour packed full of juicy fresh black cherries, topped off with the creamiest coconut ice cream I have ever tasted. Most importantly they give good cone - if you're a selling me an ice cream in a wafer cone, then frankly you can shove your wafer where the sun don't shine! I want a cone of equal calorific value to its contents and Snugberry's deliver with their crisp and sugary waffle cones. A right proper handful. Tactical ice cream tip: the servers are real pro's with their scoopage, filling the cone completely. So if you are going to get a double scoop ask for your favourite flavour first to get the most of it. Am I over thinking this? Possibly. Do I care? Not a chance.

Although, saying that, 'geleteria' does sound a bit exotic and unusual, doesn't it? It does sound more enticing than 'ice cream shop' though, so I can see why they'd use that instead. Rich's is primarily a nice little café at the quieter end of Lord Street which offers its customers a pleasant atmosphere in a reasonably-sized area that gives shoppers the chance to take the weight of their feet and have a hot drink and a sandwich or light snack. However, where Rich's really excels is in its range of desserts. As their sign says, Rich's sells ice cream in a variety of flavours and colours, meaning even the fussiest person could find a flavour to suit their tastes (I usually play safe and stick to chocolate myself, but each to their own). Their dessert menu also features a selection of homemade delicacies such as sundaes and huge chocolate éclairs which at three quid are pretty expensive but are definitely worth it, as my éclair-loving friend will testify.
