My husband and I went on a Saturday morning to donate platelets for the first time. We read through…read morethe materials, chose a video to watch during the donation (as it takes over 2 hours), and took our seats. We got all set up and started watching our movies while the donation began. I was warned that I had to sit still, which I did except for one time when I moved my arm ever so slightly. Apparently, my slight movement was enough for the needle to become dislodged from my vein, and begin to fill the tissue of my arm with the red blood cells and saline that were returning to my arm. I started to feel a lot of pressure in my upper arm and bicep, but I waited a few minutes before asking for help because I thought that this was just due to the fluids being returned to my arm after the platelets had been retrieved. Throughout my donation, I was not checked once, nor was my husband... they did seem understaffed. They checked the machines, but they did not check me. At one point I had asked for a blanket and they gave it to me, but I always had to ask for help, they never came to check me on their own. I finally called one of the phlebotomists over - she came over and all she said was that I had a bruise. I didn't know what that meant, so I asked her, and she just repeated that I had a bruise. Another person came over and told me the needle had become dislodged and that when this happens, they call it "getting a bruise," but it would have been very nice if the first person had told me what it meant when I asked. It was very cold in the donation center, so I left to sit in the car so I can warm up and wait for my husband. While I was outside sitting in my car, I overheard two employees who were evidently on a break complaining about things going on... They were complaining about equipment, co-workers, and people, and it was quite loud. I put up my windows because I didn't want to hear it, but if I had wanted to, I could have eavesdropped on their entire conversation. I thought this was incredibly unprofessional. I went back in when I thought my husband's donation must have been over, and I asked another employee what had happened with my arm. He explained it very clearly, and I wondered why the first phlebotomist couldn't explain it at all, let alone clearly. They told me that I would have a very large bruise on my upper arm in the next few days, and that the bruising was normal. Another employee came over to me and said she wanted to do some paperwork on me. She told me to ice my arm that day, and then use heat for subsequent days. She gave me a bunch of ice packs and paper towels to use for the day. She said she would follow up with me on Monday or Tuesday, but today is Thursday and I have not had one phone call. My arm is completely purple, and even though I expected it, it looks disgusting. My entire arm is swollen and there is some pain, in that it feels like my blood circulation is being cut off. I can't fully straighten my arm and my range of motion is diminished. I'm having trouble sleeping because when I put any pressure on my arm, it causes pain, and it is keeping me up. I've had a horrible experience, and I will never give blood, and certainly never give platelets again. It is just too risky. I can only hope that this doesn't affect my circulation or immune system as the weeks pass. I am also disappointed that no one followed up with me to see how I was doing.

Updated. Just gave my 10th unit here and the place still rocks. Really convenient, accepts walkins,…read morenice people, snacks. Right off 90. Just go.
