Dirtiest gym in Louisville. 5 people on duty and you can't even get a paper towel. What a mess

Over crowded, packed all the time. Loads of tripods and cameras. Staff is very friendly but the customer base isn't very accommodating

I had been wanting to work with a personal trainer and came across The Factory Gym a few weeks ago…read more After realizing that it is located in my end of town that made me take the plunge as they are not only close to my house but offer personal training as well. I called and talked to the general manager, Tarek who was so very helpful, answered all my questions and encourage me to come in a take a tour of the gym. I had no idea that the gym has been there since 1984 about as long that we have lived in the south-end, across from the post office on Allmond Ave. The space is open with free weights, machines, a training area with all kinds of equipment to perform every exercise you could ever do. The staff are very friendly, plenty of parking right out side the door, men and women's locker rooms, a breakroom, healthy food options and a small kitchen. There are many bodybuilders who work out in the gym but everyone has been friendly and helpful if I have questions. Tarek hooked me up with Kayla, one of the trainers. You have to be a member of the gym to train there but they take Silver Sneakers so that is cool. I paid the gym directly for my training sessions and they cut you a deal if you pay for 8 sessions up front (one free). Kayla has been fantastic. As a body builder herself I feel confident in her workouts. She pushes me and I'm sore after our workouts but she is intent on preventing injury while building strength, mobility and balance. We had a couple of conversations prior to our first visit and she has tailored my sessions to work on my issues. I have finished 7 of my 8 sessions, going to the gym twice a week meeting with Kayla and what she wants me to focus on outside of our sessions together. She went out of town and sent me two workouts to do while she was gone. We will meet this week for our last session. I have been impressed with the facility, the staff and especially my trainer Kayla.

Currently, this gym is not a place I can recommend as of summer 2018, unfortunately. The equipment…read moreis ancient, often broken, the carpet is torn in random places, the cardio area is not functional and many times over the past week or so the gym is empty, including the owner who is absent. I tested out one of the dusty ellipticals and it was rickety at a medium speed. I have not seen very many people use those cardio relics. The decor is dreadful, and sometimes I've wondered how it stays in business. My belief is that somebody somewhere is paying the bills for reasons I don't know. This gym is not likely to be in the black on its own. The bathrooms are clean though. Another positive is that of the very few who workout there, they usually are people who are serious about fitness or bodybuilding and do not want distractions, which I can respect. Women seldom pass through this gym. I have been in there during a week night, when there should have been some people after work, and I was the only one that night, which astounded me. The problems go deeper. The owner tries to lock members into long-term contracts at above-market rates, and it appears that sometimes it works but other times it doesn't, by the subjective impression I have seen at a distance. Probably the future of this establisment will result in the owner walking away. This is because the upgrades required to bring it beyond the 1980s, which appears to be the last time it was renovated, will require a near overhaul from a business devoid of substantial clientele. Lastly, the risk of injury is significant due to the dilapidated condition of the equipment. Wires have lost their rubber sheathing, steel handles are mismatched, and pulley wheels sometimes will not hold cables inside the track. My guess is that this gym operates in the red, and won't survive given the current requirements of athletes and relative superiority of newer gyms. Also, they do not take insurance, which often includes free memberships to chain gyms which are more likely to be operating in the near future. For those reasons, do not sign up here, even if the price is a bit higher elsewhere. I don't like to reward incompetence.

On September 9, 2014 I signed a six-month contract, which ended on February 28, 2015. Then, on August 31, 2015 my bank account was debited $110 for the contract renewal. I tried calling Super Fitness fifteen times on 8/31/15 to request a refund. I left three voice messages and never got a call back. On 9/1/2015 I drove to the gym and spoke with the owner, Fred M., and he said that the contract was probably on automatic renewal and needed to get a copy of the contract from his bank, which handled the renewals. He said would have an answer on Thursday, 9/3/2015. I called that day, and he said the mail hadn't arrived, which would have contained a copy of the contract, and to call back on Friday 9/4/2015. I called back that day, no answer. So, I drove up to the gym again, only to have Fred M. say that I chose to have the contract automatically renew because I put my initials in the renewal section. Mind you, the renewal section only states "this contract MAY renew." Not that it will renew. As in, it is optional, if so desired. Furthermore, in the renewal section, it states "you may renew this membership annually for $100 per year, with six months written out to the side. On the third option: "Or, this membership will automatically be renewed for ______ per month by Electronic Funds Transfer unless we are notified 30 days prior to expiration," nothing was selected. The funds for the automatic contract renewal were taken out of my bank account on August 31st. This is ten (10) days prior to the actual renewal date of the contract. Nowhere in the contract does it state that a cancellation request must be made within a certain time period to ensure that it does not automatically renew. Given this information, I should have been allowed a refund by giving ten days notice to request a refund, and cancel the contract. However, Fred M. stated that he could not do anything, as it would be illegal to change a written contract. He then kept pushing me to come back to his gym, and to try and cancel my membership with the gym I started going to after my contract ended in February 2015. Stating "couldn't you just cancel your contract with that gym and come here for six months?" The owner of Super Fitness, who I once had a contract with, can't authorize a refund at a customers request to cancel a contract? How is this possible? It's his contract. He is the holder, and he can't rescind the contract at the customer's request? I find that absurd. He thinks I can cancel a contract with my current gym, but he won't let me cancel a contract with him? When I asked him, "why would I wish to automatically renew a contract that only last six months?" That would be six months of not using his gym. He stated that he didn't know, he doesn't dig in to people's personal business. Pathetic business practices.

They are perfect, they are very limited with their strength training equipment but you can always make due. The staff is incredibly friendly and very very helpful, they tend to stay busy keeping the place running and clean which is nice. I like the Planet Fitness atmosphere though I can definitely understand why most don't like it, especially serious strength trainers. If you have the dedication and consistency you can make anything work though and I'm a firm believer that hard work pays off big time.
