Approachable coaches who also will push me 150% (I totally forgot to mention FUN!!) And I found it. I've been going to Evolve since mid-March, and from day 1 have had an incredible experience. Above a great experience, I'm seeing my body transform right in front of me. Not only physically am I stronger, but also mentally. Drew takes a special interest in each one of his members in a way that I've never experienced. If you don't go for a couple of days, you can bet you'll get a text from Drew. Unlike other gyms, he'll reach out to you simply because he wants you to improve, not just because your renewal date is coming up. They also regularly program interesting workouts to keep you on your toes. Over the course of 18 months, the workouts never got easy because Drew kept finding ways to keep them challenging. During my time at Be Strong, I truly felt like I had a community of people who cared about my personal progression. Ever since I moved away from Bloomington, I've been trying to figure out how to replace this truly special experience.

After moving to Illinois from California, I was extremely excited to have found a pole fitness…read morestudio in my area so that I can continue my journey. However, after taking 5 classes (3 of them which I had "injured" myself in which has almost never happened for the 1.5 years I've been training), I was extremely disappointed instead. Each class I had left feeling like there was no progress and in fact, I felt like I was back pedaling everything that I have trained and learned over the last year. I actually started to dread the weekly class membership I signed up for but since it was already paid and scheduled, I continued to go. The pole instructor Kyli was not very instructive in my opinion. She would demonstrate a move on the pole, stand back, sometimes even continuously checking the time on her phone, giving the impression that she was uninterested in really being there, awhile me and other students kind of just struggled to repeat what she had just demonstrated. When I would ask for further assistance...it was just demonstrated again. There is no coach to student engagement, no individual constructive criticism, or correct form. There wasn't even words of encouragement or affirmation when somebody would ace a move. After a few classes, I actually started clapping and giving affirmation myself to the other students of the class since nobody else, including the "coach, was doing it. However, when it was about talking about herself, it seemed like Kyli would be completely present. Which that alone was confusing. She would demonstrate part 1 of a move, tell a story for 5 mins about herself or how it relates, then continue on with showing part 2 of the move. Leaving me confused and distracted. In fact, often times I felt like I could have had more progress by simply pulling up a YouTube tutorial. I mean...nobody is receiving any feedback and we're just watching demonstrations so what exactly am I showing up for? Mind you, this class is only 60 mins long. It would be great if 15-20 mins of that class wasn't being spent on talking on things that aren't really going to interfere with what the students are here for. Even when looking at the social media pages and I'm seeing students being showcased, I'm seeing the moves in completely bad form...which if this was being corrected and there was actually engagement and wanting to see the students progress and perform at their best, it would showcase exactly just that. My "injuries" that have happened can absolutely be "my fault", however if there was more of a relationship and criticism being built, the chances of me executing a move correctly and safely...could of been higher. Hell, when I did have to repeatedly ask for correction of form (which was mostly always met with visible annoyance), look and behold, I would Ace it! No enthusiasm given with it though of course. To the owner and the instructors who are reading this feedback Please, start coaching. Not demonstrating and standing back, but COACHING. I understand a lot of us students are there for an outlet and to build community but it would be great if progress was being built as well.

Tara was great at adapting the workouts to my fitness level and injuries, especially some unique challenges that arose postpartum. I felt like she kept it challenging and new, but also didn't push too far resulting in injuries (like I had happen at traditional gyms). I'm moving out of state, otherwise I would be keeping up my regular 1-2x/week visits for health, sanity and lots of laughs! Also check out her unique couple classes, when offered. The fitness center is like the Nova Corps: It looks pretty and shiny, but once you get inside and…read morelook around you realize it's a bit of a wreck. Situated on the west side of ISU's campus, its exterior is aesthetically pleasing. A lovely flyover of University St. and interesting lines, it's a cool piece of architecture. However, as you get inside you start to get really depressed, and are tacitly encouraged not to ever consider hiring any of ISU's engineering or architecture graduates. For all of its space, the rec is laid out like an erratic 4-year old planned it. Some nautilus equipment is here, other equipment is on the other side of the building. Some aerobic equipment is at the far end of the 1/8-mile track, other equipment is 3 floors below. Too narrow a space with too little ability to organize eqiupment has rendered the workout areas disjunct and too spaced. The electronics (WiFi and the TVs on some of the aerobic machines) are often malfunctioning. The locker rooms were designed and laid out without any forethought or planning: Lockers jamed into 90-degree corners so that users have to stand 5-abreast while changing in a confined space, no ventilation leaving it humid by mid-day, and with the weight room above so that anyone showering or changing feels they are doing so amid the siege of Kabul. For what was supposed to be the pride of ISU, it becomes a craphole of a place upon cursory inspection. To its credit, it is cheap (about $20/month membership for faculty/staff, "included" via fees for enrolled students) and readily accessible albiet with no available parking. Really a testament to a lack of beta testing, forethought, or concern for long term usability, its the only option on-campus, so its monopoly means it can get away with much more than a competitive market; but while architecturally interesting the fitness center doesn't rival the quality or interior aesthetics of even nearby Illinois Weslyan or schools in ISU's weight class.

The rec is probably my favorite place on campus. It is fairly new with a ton of fitness equipment…read more I usually go in the morning to have plenty of choice in my workout. The pool is clean. It has 4 lanes and I have never had to wait to swim. The locker room is open to anyone and there are plenty of lockers inside. The rec has every piece of equipment you would want to use. Cardio machines, free weights, strength training machines, indoor track, rock climbing wall, basketball courts, and fitness classrooms are all here. There is even a Jamba Juice for your post workout. Illinois State has one of the very best facilities for students to work out.

The upstairs balcony overlooks all the courts and includes a kitchen for social gatherings. Downstairs, you have a nice bathroom, sauna, and private work out area--with personal training and development available. The staff is really the muscle of this place. Friendly, accommodating, and pure, unbridled passion for tennis and community, come to mind. Lovely ladies and men. If you're not feeling the vibe or pace of Four Seasons, Gold's, or LA, come to Evergreen Tennis. Not just to play the great game of tennis, but to have fun while working out your mind and body. Update: 1/23/18 I've been working closely with one of the Tennis Pros at the club, Roger. He's a great instructor--with a wealth of knowledge, applicable techniques, and insight to the game. I've made great strides as a beginner, but have a leg-up being a left-hander and 25 years of soccer and basketball experience. Everyone is always friendly at the club. I love coming here!

This gym is wonderful! It's a women's gym, so women started it and only women are a part of the…read morefamily. I say family but truly what it is. These women really get me motivated to work out, and do things I don't really want to do. But after I do them and the classes I feel so much better and want to do better in my life. Dafne is a wonderful person, shipment of energy and makes a great leader. All of the women that instruct the classes are awesome because they all have a lot of energy and they know how to explain the moves in a way that you get the hang of it. The most important part about the gym, is that there is no judgment. You don't feel like you're being watched, or judged on how you do the moves compared to someone else. The instructors are easy to talk to if you need help or to get the form down to prevent injury. These ladies are looking out for you without embarrassing you. The trainer, Nicolette is great! When I did some training with her, she explained why we are doing the exercises, which really helped me understand why I was doing it! It made me enjoy going to training instead of dreading it.

I highly recommend The Training and Performance Center, also known as "TPC", for youth sports…read moreenhancement training. My son has been attending the quick start youth training performance program for a few months now. He goes to the program 2 to 3 days a week. This is a newer facility that is kept really clean. The staff members are well educated for this type of work. You can read about their background, education, and training specialties by reading their biographies on the wall. They have a nice relaxing waiting room for parents that is adjacent to the training area and it has a glass wall so parents can observe the training as it is taking place. At the beginning of the program they ask everyone to complete an assessment to document sports performance levels before taking part in the program. Then later on another assessment will be done to measure the progress. I really appreciate the fact that they do assessments like this. Last year my son took part in a similar sports enhancement program at the Four Season's Pit and they did not have my kids complete an assessment like this so it was difficult to know what progress they had made in the program. The pricing is also reasonable. I also appreciate their flexibility with the scheduling. If we cannot make our scheduled days for they week, they allow us to come on another day! Check it out! Good program.
