Accounting is generally viewed as boring but important - a confusing chore which most of us dread doing and usually hire someone expensive to do it for us. Well here is a company which, for a fixed fee, combines online accounting (easy documentation for you) and an accountant that is easily accessible by phone - at no extra cost (hurrah). The company specialises in contractors, freelancers or people with their own ltd company. I signed up recently and found the whole process surprisingly easy: the staff were really friendly and helpful, the process was quick and they showed me how to save money in tax. Excellent! read more

Meh I've been with them for approx 18 months now and had to upgrade to their premium service - £150 a month just to circumvent issues with their system. Their system has serious flaws - their account reconciliation with your bank statements is horrid horrid horrid and never works, so you need to pay extra for a book keeper to do it for you, and they don't always do it properly. The system itself constantly sends out erroneous messages about things it thinks you need to do but have already done which, if you're anything like me and loathe accounting, is panic inducing. The one thing I'd say in its favour - invoicing and expensing is nice. That's it. I'm now researching alternatives. read more

Been with them for few months now and so far so good. I got to grips with the system/site easily enough and they give good customer service as there always happy to chat. Big thumbs up. I even bothered to write a review! read more

Really simple looking and effective proposition. Friendly contacts, quick and simple and Crunch seem super confident about a simple transition from my old accounting system. read more

I've been with Crunch since I became self-employed a couple of years ago, and it was one the best decisions I made. The system is easy to use and they continue to add features to make it even simpler. The account managers and team of accountants behind it are great. When I've had questions, they've always been able to understand and resolve them in a timely fashion as well as teach me a little more about my account, too. Biggest win was passing over my interaction with HMRC on my account to Crunch, with a great saving (the stress doing it has gone!). Thank you Crunch. read more

I've been a Crunch customer for about 6 months and have been really happy with the service easy to use software and I love the fact I've got an accountant on the end of the phone. I hate accounting (it's why I switched degree courses many years ago!) so was pleasantly surprised by how easy it is. Good for a business newbie like me as all my (many) questions can quickly be sorted out over the phone :) read more

I was with Crunch accountants up until recently and would not recommend either. Customer service is terrible - emails never replied too, phone calls never returned etc. The reason I joined with an accountant in the first place was to get help and advice when I needed it and I've ended up having to research all the answers to my questions myself! Upon my research I came across another great online accountant who has been miles better so have moved over to them. Would NOT recommend this company! read more

I was pretty nervous about setting up a company and moving from being a freelancer it's kind of a scary thing. But at a point I realised I couldn't freelance forever and figured I should set up as a limited company. I called Crunch on the advice of a friend. I'm so glad I did it's one of the best business decisions I've made over the last few years. They set me up as a company and explained exactly how their system works. And from that point onwards it's been great. Invoicing and expensing are a breeze (it's simple and brilliant) and sorting out my pay and the legalities of it all (the HMRC real time stuff which they do automagically) is easy. I've asked loads of questions and looking back some of them seem pretty stupid but they've always been brilliant (and incredibly tolerant) about answering everything. Honestly, I can't praise them enough. At the end of the day, Crunch is just another tool that helps me get my job done maximise my earnings and take away the hassle. I've said it before, but there are very few companies I'm always happy to recommend Crunch is definitely one of those. Tellingly I've recommended it to a few of my friends doing a similar job to me. They've all signed up they'd all recommend it which is a pretty good sign :) read more

You're paying to do your own accounting with Crunch. A nice website and overview it may be but the accountant is doing less while you're doing more and you're paying for that chore. read more

I joined Crunch Accounting as I set up a limited company while working as a contractor and it has been terrible. 1. I have had around 5-10 account managers 2. I have had around 5-10 accountants 3. With 1. & 2. my account has been passed on person to person and communication between people and departments has been terrible. 4. With all the information that was uploaded to the site, the accountants still were unable to write up the appropriate documents and kept asking for information that was already on the system, 5. On closing the limited company as moved back to PAYE, I was asked to completed the DS10 and other documentation, on completing this and sending the information back I waited over 3 months for Crunch Accounting to action. I had to keep calling throughout the time to see what was going on, but no one seemed to have a clue..... 6. I was offered a free self assessment as an apology (final one, as company closed), but Crunch accounting managed to mess up again. They took a P60 I sent to them (which covered the whole year, for all jobs), then added a wage from a P45, therefore inflating my wage and coming back to me, saying I will need to pay nearly £7,000 in tax...!? Wrote back to explain the error and have all amended, it was finally and reduced the tax to £1.80 only!!! But, like always and even though I had accepted the £1.80 tax, I was sent a further email from someone else this time asking me to check and approve the tax return and information.....HOW MANY TIMES TO I NEED TO CHECK THE SAME DOCUMENT??? I a nut shell: Terrible communication, terrible turn around of staff, incapability of doing accounting and never the same person dealing with you. Please do NOT use, I am sure there are more professional companies out there. I can't wait to be finished with!! read more

We've used Crunch for a few years now, it's a good system if your invoicing and expenses are simple but a bit of a hassle if you want to claim maternity pay etc (it was for us, they didn't quite have a handle on it at that point in time and several people working at Crunch had told me different things). Once you've inputted all your information they work out the best way to save money via tax etc but if you're a growing business you might want to get some independent advice and plan ahead for the future. You need to keep your wits about you as moving amounts from one area to another (done their end to rectify the maternity pay) has knock on effects for the director's loan account and tax implications if you're deemed to have had a loan for more than 9 months. Last year they provided the accounts 2 days before the filing (and corporation tax payment) deadline over Christmas, so not much time to query anything or organise a bank transfer (which only occur on working days). I'm very organised and they had all the information they needed for months, I told them we weren't working over Christmas which they obviously ignored - I don't want to be pouring over accounts when I should be spending time with friends and family. We did use an independent accountant for a few years previously for the company and to do our tax returns who was a lot more expensive and didn't do very much (messed up the student loan on my self assessment), at least with the Crunch system you get information at your fingertips and we do our own self-assessment now. It seems to be the slightly out of ordinary things that trip up accountants in general. read more

I was one of Crunch's very first customers. I was promised a meal if I mentioned the service to others. I did of course, but no meal (just sales talk!). I referred many more people to Crunch who I'm now in the process of referring away. They were fine when they were small. They believed they were being disruptive (a bad term to use, usually means there isn't yet a market for it). As the company grew the service got worse. No longer was I talking to an accountant, but an account manager. Someone who would either give incorrect advice (pointed out on several occasions, with an oh yeah, you're right response), or I ended up doing my own accounts and having to get a third party accountant to review them. At best they're suitable for contractors (I.e 1 client at a time), in which case your tax is simple enough to calculate using FreeAgent or the like. They've lost their gap in the market. Xero/FreeAgent are much better and cheaper, and so is paying an accountant on top to get advice that saves you money. Their software is incredibly slow compared to competitors, they've also barely improved their product since it launched despite how much they've claimed to spend on it. They're about to increase their fees which is just a sign that they're not profitable enough for their shareholders. They don't care at all about their clients, which is what you need from an accountant. I don't want a standard reply from Crunch about how they can improve their service (they can't), I just suggest other people, especially growing businesses, consider other options or it could cost you many £1000s that you weren't aware. Go for an online software package + a real life accountant who cares about your business. From what I hear more and more of their customers feel the same so I don't know how they feel they'll achieve their growth targets. Investors watch out! read more

I rarely recommend services to people there are just few things out there that are impressive enough for me to point other people to them but Crunch is one that I do. In fact, I've even caught myself urging people I know who run their own businesses to make the move from traditional accountant to Crunch. I've been with them for three years and have been consistently impressed. The software is easy, even fun, to use. I feel in control of my accounts in a way I never was with a trad accountant. The service is superb. My wife also runs her own business and a few months ago we both had a question about a tax issue. We both e-mailed our accountants. My wife's accountants came back to her in three days; Crunch came back to me in 3 minutes. Both gave useful advice but Crunch is moving at a pace that fits 2012 not 1912. It's continually improving. In fact it was a recent development that prompted me to write this review: they've just introduced a multi-currency function. I probably have one or two overseas jobs every year and it's always been a hassle messing around with different currencies, so this will be very handy. Good work everyone at Crunch! read more

I came across these guys when I was looking to get shot of the awesomely crappy accountant who was slowly bleeding my business to death. I was sceptical as I read the blurb about how it was "painless" and "easy" and rolled my eyes when I got to the bit about saving money AND time as that is just crazily unlikely, if it were true everyone would be using them, right? Well I'm a year into using the software + accountant now and they have saved me a good £5k (this year alone) and that is AFTER I deduct their fee. Plus it takes me 10 mins a week to do my invoices and expensed saving me about 48 hours of tedious fiddling a month. I don't know why they are not the only accountants out there, I guess most people just don't like extra money and free time?! Please, please, please can Crunch take over the transport network too? I'd like to cut my daily commute from an hour to about five minutes and the price from £10k a year down to the price of a coffee and muffin.... read more

Great concept which ought to work very well. Unfortunately, like most low-cost, automated systems it becomes a nightmare when things go wrong. And they frequently do. I could not reconcile my accounts for over 6 months after I transferred to Crunch, the system cannot not read HSBC corporate card statements (or any uploaded statement without a balance column), it seems mostly to be staffed by low-cost juniors with little experience and whose their professional advice is, at best, superficial, at worst plain wrong (an error over VAT due cost me £££). They frequently fail to do what they promise and even forget they were even asked! I really want to love Crunch as much as they want to be loved but, honestly, they are way off target in providing a professional service that can justify even the seductively low monthly fee. Until they get their act together it is simply not worth the hassle and potential a big time consuming mistake. read more

I was one of Crunch's first customers, in fact the very first, so I have been with them through the early days when, as expected, there were teething problems. What stood out was how they dealt with these, namely swiftly and honestly. It is when things go wrong that you really find out what a business is like. And when I have a query or complaint now, several years on (which is rare) they deal with me as I would expect that is why I stay with them. For me, it delivers exactly what it says. If you want control over your finances and are prepared to do some of the data input, it is excellent. If you want someone to do it for you, they offer that service as well I believe. The key differential is that Crunch are no vanilla accounting firm. They are innovative, and always looking to add value. read more

I've been really disappointed with Crunch. The software is just about OK, but the much-vaunted service decidedly lacking. Lowlights for me - Its taken 6 months to get it set up properly, and is still not right. - E-mail queries consistently required several prompts to get replied. - Telephone messages left and not returned. - My VAT submission was made late, and then only after my prompting, resulting in an encounter with HMRC. Crunch has flashy software and marketing. The company looks to be making the mistake of many other IT service suppliers however, and being obsessed with that to the detriment of service. I'm sticking with it for now, but very unsure about the long term unless it gets better. read more

I have been a Crunch client for the last 8 months and the level of service has been nothing but superb. From setting up my company through to chasing invoices and paying myself, the whole process is and has been, utterly painless. I recently emailed them a few suggestions and ideas, not really thinking anything more of it. A couple of days later, I received a call from their MD inviting me for a beer as he want to hear more. From a customer service point of view, I am not aware of any other company where this happens, especially in such a large organisation. Simply phenomenal. Working with Crunch allows me to get on running my business. read more

Looks good but fails to deliver. I have recently moved over to Crunch after seeing one of their demonstrations have had a month of Hell trying to set up my information and still have a number of errors. I have had my issues escalated on numerous occasions, spoken to 3 different individuals, all of whom claim to be looking into my company set up and providing assurances that this has been completed accurately only for me to find further inaccuracies and issues. Some of which could have resulted in incorrect fillings with the HMRC. I would NOT recommend Crunch to anyone. read more

When I became freelance I was looking for a simple accounting system. I realised Crunch was a good fit for my needs while I was compairing online invoicing systems as it was the only 360-degree service. I used to work with an innovation agency so it's part of my expertise. Using the system for the first time I found it to be intuitive and it was clear they had made sure that usability and design was a priority, which is something I appreciate. I have been with CRUNCH for 3 years and in that time I have had no grounds for complaint at all. In fact, the opposite. They advertise themselves as being human first and software second - I find them proactive, friendly, courteous and knowledgeable and they apply the utmost professionalism towards my company accounts and me as a small business owner. If only my bank were so proactive and professional! 5 Stars. I have no issues whatsoever. read more
