Super tasty quality food, I noticed that on the menu it even tells you which farm the meat came from, or where the ice cream was made etc. The Greek Lamb and the Gammon are both brilliant. The portions are huge and I'm always left with enough food for another meal but save room for the Holly Bush sundae because you wont ever have a such a selection of tasty locally made ice cream :) The prices are great too, last time I went it was around 30quid for the 2 of us.

The Plough & Harrow is a very old pub situated on an old Roman and London Road. It used to be an…read moreold coaching inn, and still has the old fabulous stables, redone and adding a touch of history to the place. A few years ago it was partially ruined in a flood, but the rebuild has gone a long way to making it one of the best pubs in Tamworth. It has a very large garden, lots of tables, a canopy and outside braziers for nice but chilly spring evenings. The inside has low ceilings, exposed beams and magnolia walls. It's a nice, comfy old English pub feel, but without the tatty standard maroon carpet. There aren't many tables inside, so standing is pretty much a must. The Plough & Harrow gets really busy on weekend nights, and is a haven to the young and trendy Tamworth set (you didn't know they existed, did you?) before they go on to a club. The music is pretty decent, through speakers, and so loud on weekends that talking inside isn't very plausible. The P&H also have a very nice restaurant attached, which I haven't been to, but have heard very positive reviews about -- it's mainly Italianish food with a modern twist. The pub grub here is very good, with some different things (Cajun Chicken Sandwich, YUM), and with excellent chips. I can't rave enough about these chips, which are nearly potato wedges, nicely cooked with delicious seasoning. The main bartender/manager is a really friendly guy, and all the staff are pretty chatty and nice. They often have fun activities, both for adults in the evening and families at the weekends, like an American 4th of July party (yay!), and festivals. They provide accomodation, which some of my friends from the US took advantage of when they came over for my wedding. The rooms are all refurbished and nicely laid out, with comfy beds and decent WCs. Nothing astonishing, exccept when you consider the SUPER CHEAP price. The rooms are all a bit off from the pub, so the noise level also isn't too bad.

The atmosphere was friendly and fairly warm, it was all beautifully clean and quite cosy inside, and it was easily worth spending the 10 minutes driving that it took to get away from Tamworth motorway services. It is at the edge of Cannock Chase and if you sit on the far side of the pub by the window you can see for miles. The name comes from the old windmill in the grounds across the bowling green. In the winter it is lovely sitting by the roaring fire. There is a bar, lounge and upstairs restaurant. Sunday lunch is excellent with a good choice of meat. You can also order off the menu. The fish and chips are massive and amazing with crispy batter. Never had a bad meal here just sometimes they go over the top with peas but if you love them it's fine. They do good bread and butter pudding with custard. They also do real ale.

On a snowy Tuesday evening in January and with the aid of our trusty Sat-Nav, we went in search of…read morethe Cock Inn, a place reputed to serve great homemade food. The car park is in the front of what is a fairly large pub, courtesy of its large dining room extension in 2000. Having negotiated some fairly narrow roads to get there, it was good to get inside the warm cosy surroundings and peruse the menu. The bar area of the Cock Inn was packed with locals and the bar itself had a wide range of drinks on offer, sadly driving, I had to stick to coke. The dining room was large with a variety of seating, tables in the window, to make the most of what I suspect is a tremendous view, large tables in the centre for groups and cosier tables for couples. The beamed ceiling awash with what looked like Christmas tree lights, and even trees that appeared to be coming out of the floor, decked with the same lights and the occasional Robin. Sounds strange, but it really did work, the feeling of a calm relaxing environment was great after a day's work. Menu wise, not huge, just right, we skipped the starters and went straight for the main courses, a good variety around the £10-11 mark, like gammon, various different pies, cod and other slightly more expensive dishes like rump of lamb and steak. I went for the fish pie, clearly homemade, a large portion packed with fish (cod, salmon etc), perfectly cooked in a creamy but not overpowering sauce topped with mash potato and a sprinkle of cheese, comfort food personified! My wife had the steak and ale pie, packed with filling, gravy and a thin pastry top, so good. The accompanying peas, carrots, new potatoes and cabbage were the perfect sides. Probably full enough to stop, we ventured to have a dessert, because we were so enjoying the food and the ambience so much. Classics like a cheese board, sticky toffee pudding were on offer, but I had the chocolate fudge cake, with ice cream, slightly disappointing, could have done with being a little more chocolatey. My wife had the homemade apple, date and ginger crumble; an unbelievably good crumble, arguably the stand out dish of the night, I was lucky enough to be able to finish it off, so often desserts flatter to deceive, its nice when a dessert lives up to its billing. On the completion of our meal, we immediately booked in for Sunday lunch in few weeks time, we were very impressed!

There is a good selection of beers and wines. The owners are lovely and very friendly, the bar staff are great too. Friday night is live music night with a different band playing every week, the shoulder has a website so that you can see who is on but it does get busy when entertainment is on so best to get in there early, they have a lounge, bar and outside area which is fully heated and very nice. Accommodation was in a separate conversion in the yard and seems to be limited to just a few rooms. Clean, tidy and comfortable as you would expect from this type of inn. Quiet village so fairly easy to get a good nights sleep, though the walls between rooms are a bit thin. Tasty breakfast included in the room price which was also very reasonable.
