I had a terrible experience dealing with Patti here. I was shopping around for affordable car…read moreinsurance, was told my payments would be $135. Which was a lot cheaper than some other places I checked out. Getting signed up was an easy and quick process. Then when my payment came out I was charged $147. After inquiring about this I found my rate was actually $145 PLUS SERVICE CHARGES. Which no service charges was EVER discussed at the time of signing up. And just a heads up if you don't use auto pay there is a HIGHER service charge and you have to pay two months at a time. I also asked why rates are higher when I live in a small town and when I was living in a city it was significantly cheaper plus I have a clean driving record. She point blank told me she couldn't tell me why because she didn't know herself. So that just goes to show you how much this place actually knows about insurance.

I refinanced my car three years ago, I was insured with farmers prior to this. While on the phone with them I was advising of my lien holder change. They told me there was a $5/month fee for having a lien on my car. I just paid off my car and called to get that $5 fee removed. The agent gave me a new rate, $30/ year less. I asked about the fee. She insisted there was no fee for this. Well, they charged me for the last three years with this fee!! 30 minutes later I called back and dropped them for auto. All this after they jacked my homeowners by nearly $400!! I can't wait to drop my homeowners with them.

I preface my review by saying I'm sure Lafata is the cat's meow when it comes to helping folks file…read moretaxes and get whatever refunds are coming to them (or minimize what's owed). My particular review is for another matter that I was requested to get advise from a tax specialist. Now that the "fun" part is done with the purchase of D and I's new home, part of my new fun is selling my existing home. To do so there are various fixes that need to be done to make it market ready. I don't have a lot of extra cash but hoped to sell some shares from a Roth I've been contributing to for well over a decade to help pay some of those costs. My mutual fund company is being extra cautious in selling the shares I requested. In a nutshell I can take back money I've contributed (assuming I've contributed for at least 5 years) but not money that was earned. On that end they sent me a list of all my transactions over the decade or so that I've contributed and suggested I talk to a tax specialist and seek their opinion as far as what I can sell. That's where Lafata comes in. I figured I would likely need a tax service in 2017 to help me file both a non-resident Illinois tax form (since for the time being I will continue to work at my company in IL) and a part-year resident Indiana tax form, so why not try to establish a relationship with a specialist now. I called them on the 12th and the receptionist was polite and transferred me to a tax specialist. But the tax specialist was confused on what and why I needed their help. I explained the best I could and finally he asked for my phone number and said he would call back later in the evening since he was currently busy with other customers. That's totally understandable since it is "tax season" now. But as of the 18th no call. The least he could've done was schedule an appointment for me to come over so I could show and explain my situation more clearly. I contacted another tax service and they were just as confused by my request but they did schedule a time for me to stop by and present my information. I have doubts about the other service as well but will reserve judgment for after my appointment.
