The majority of the class is instruction. We do have some play time but in the other school it seems like we're playing half the time. I can play in the water with him on my own. I pay for classes so he can learn. 2. The class he's in is more age appropriate. At the other school, there are much bigger kids in his class. The problem is that the classes are taught to the highest level. You can teach a 2 year old to kick and pull his arms, grab the side of the pool, and pull himself out. But the other school said the class would be appropriate for my baby at 4 months. At 4 months he couldn't even sit, let alone pull himself out of a pool. At BSS we are working on skills he can handle, like floating on his back. We'll get to the other stuff when it's appropriate. 3. At the other school, we've seen 3 teachers in 5 months. They're all very sweet (and young). But at BSS the classes are taught by someone older who CLEARLY knows her stuff about swimming and water safety. Brooke is such a pro- I've seen her with older kids and she's as great with them as she is with the babies in our class. 4. There's a whole attitude of safety around BSS. Their Water Watchers idea is something so smart that I never thought of (grownups take turns watching kids in the pool and doing NOTHING ELSE). The commitment to safety lets me know that the program is designed to make my child's experience in the water as safe as possible. It's not kitschy or heavily themed and they don't have a cute mascot for sale or scented goggles but I honestly didn't sign him up for lessons for those things. I signed him up so he would be safe in the water.

I know that they are trying to get you to the point of being not reliant on anything to help you swim. But the owner pulled her out of a group at the end of a session. And while all the other children were playing, forced her to try to blink water out of her eyes. To the point where she was crying. She does not cry. I would think with years of experience that the owner would've handled our situation better. And when I brought it up, I was told she left "empowered". She was not. The next several sessions when I brought her back, she would not jump in the pool anymore, and she would not go underwater. She would cry. And did not want to go to any more lessons. At our pool, she was swimming without any type of swimmies and utilizing some of the skills she learned.... jumping and going underwater, getting to the edge and getting out of the pool. We allowed her to swim to the edge and get out of the pool and wipe her eyes. Not every child is the same, and you cannot bully someone into doing what you think they should. Sometimes it takes more patience. And we were getting there until she was singled out and made to cry. Also, the first location in Greenfield was very good. The main instructor was awesome. She also had her utilizing the blink method with some success. But at the new location in New Palestine, the new instructors were not as good. And unfortunately, the owner made things worse.

Sensei Ken Piper quickly accommodated us and spent an hour with us describing the program and costs, and then provided a demo lesson to show our son what would be expected during a class. Our son loved it so much we signed him (and his older brother) up. Both have been attending for nearly a year now and are now orange belts. We appreciate that not only are they learning various forms of karate (basics, sparring, kata), but they are also learning self-discipline and respect. They have taken the lessons from the dojo to their classroom and home. Pricing is very affordable, especially for parents considering joining along with their children. Packages are available from 1 lesson a week to unlimited classes. Special add-on lessons (weapons and seminars) are also available. The schedule is very convenient with evening and Saturday classes. Beginners can move through their first few belts within their first year which is encouraging. The Senseis are very patient with all ages and abilities, and a typical class usually has a diverse group of 10-15 students ages 7 years old to 50. Safety and hygiene are also emphasized, especially mid-pandemic. The facility is good and there is plenty of space for classes and overflow seating for spectators. The studio recently remodeled their waiting area. The studio's goal is for every student to reach Black Belt within a few years, so we hope to stay that long!

My wife and I decided to let her do some trial classes nearby at Mr. Piper's Family Karate Academy. All of the instructors we met were very kind and respectful. It was instantly visible that all of the kids looked up to and respected the staff at this school! The classes were fun and my daughter always enjoyed attending. She never fussed about going to class. Not even once! Which speaks volumes for a 4 year old! They do a great job teaching respect, discipline, manners, being humble... etc. (the whole karate thing!) I started my own martial arts journey nearly 14 years ago at another karate school in my hometown of Mooresville, IN. Not to the fault of Mr. Piper or any of his instructors, I ultimately made the personal decision to resume classes (now with my daughter) at my hometown dojo. I would like to thank Mr. Piper for re-igniting the passion I once had for martial arts by enthralling my daughter into the karate lifestyle! In addition to the store, which carries all your girl scout needs, they have meeting rooms, a game room, administrative offices and a lounge. They also have a very nice patio area out front and a decent sized parking lot. The store has all your Girl Scout needs from official uniform clothing, to badges, to patches, and some toys. I was greeted immediately when I came in. I told them what I was looking for and the woman working got all the pieces of the uniform together for me. They made it very easy. They all were very helpful and knowledgeable about the program. I really like this facility and hope that my daughter's troop will be able to incorporate this place into their program and maybe even go camping or earn some badges here. This place is well planned out and put together. Every scout should have the opportunity to go there at some point.

I finally met with a director whom seemed uninterested in working with me. I continue to help out as I could. The chapter as a whole was not innovative or creative. They seemed happy to continue doing the same activities year after year. They actually hosted a cookie and beer event one year. I thought it was a good addition, but tons of people complained. It was beyond strange. People here say they want to do more, but back off when met with resistance. After two years of trying to help, I finally gave up and took my money elsewhere. This chapter is extremely unwelcoming to outsiders. The prefer volunteers with Indiana roots or children in the chapter. I had neither. Also, this place is located across the street from the Women's Correctional Facility. It seems like an odd location for a children's camp.

My newly…read more4-year-old and almost 6-year-old kids are on their second session of classes here, and I've loved all of their teachers so far. There doesn't seem to be a majorly competitive/pressure-filled vibe here at all. There are kids there who have never taken a class, and some you can tell who have been doing gymnastics since they started walking, but everyone is given the same amount of time and attention. When a child masters a new skill, they get to ring a bell and everyone there claps for them---it's really cute and a great way to build self esteem in these kiddos. Classes are fairly inexpensive, as well.

But I did take…read morean outdoor yoga class with them that met at Flat Fork Creek Park in the outskirts of Fishers (almost Fortville). What a great class, for many reasons. First, the instructor. I believe her name was Martha. Her cues were so clear that I never had to look at her -- I could just close my eyes and focus on myself and the flow. She also cued some interesting and slightly challenging poses, which I enjoyed. Second, the class itself. This outdoor class that I got to experience on a beautiful and auspicious morning was completely free. Free! I didn't even have to register online or anything. I just showed up to the park, climbed to the top of a hill, and placed my yoga mat down on the grass. I think it is so cool, and so in the spirit of yoga, that Roots and Wings offers free outdoor yoga classes to the community. Talk about spreading good vibes! Roots and Wings is practicing what they are preaching. Third, this class that I took was not a one-off. They offer free outdoor classes all summer, plus some in the fall. I will definitely be joining some of the other classes they are offering, and also visiting them in the studio at some point. I can already tell that these guys are my kind of people.
