To find relief for my lower back pain, my PCP referred me to Dr. Christopher Edwards at the Atlanta…read moreNeurological and Spine Institute. Dr. Edwards is an orthopedic surgeon who is renowned in his field, having been the first to perform many different types of spinal surgeries in Georgia and having worked with many college and pro athletes. The Spine Institute also has an in-house physical therapy clinic, so I will break this review into two parts. Part 1 - Dr. Edwards, Mr. Adams, PA-C: I had five appointments with the doctor. The first appointment, where I was initially evaluated, was handled by Dr. Edwards' Physician Assistant, David Adams. Mr. Adams surveyed my experience with back pain and performed a series of tests which included testing my range of motion, strength, and reflexes. Mr. Adams, in consultation with Dr. Edwards, ordered an MRI and a follow-up appointment. In the meantime, I was prescribed medicine and physical therapy. The length of time between my first appointment and my follow-up appointment was exactly one week, with my MRI promptly taken in between. The process was fast and efficient. At my follow-up appointment, I saw both Mr. Adams and Dr. Edwards. At this appointment, I learned that I had two ruptured discs. Both Mr. Adams and Dr. Edwards pointed out and explained the problem areas on my MRI. Dr. Edwards had a good discussion with me about what was going on with my discs, what may have caused it, and my treatment options. He also answered all my questions. Treatment-wise, he prescribed various medications and physical therapy at his office. After learning of my disc herniations, Dr. Edwards was very particular about which PT clinic he wanted me to go to. At my third appointment, after 5 weeks of PT and no significant pain relief, I was seen by Mr. Adams again. At this appointment, both he and Dr. Edwards agreed I should proceed with an epidural. Dr. Edwards' office referred me to an anesthesiologist where I had a three sets of injections done. After the epidural injections, I saw Dr. Edwards again. This time, he was accompanied by resident M.D. David Fiedler. Based on my age and symptoms, Dr. Edwards did not recommend surgery. Instead, he recommended I receive IDD (intervertebral differential dynamics) therapy from a neurology group. Based on my visits with Dr. Edwards, I find him to be a very knowledgeable doctor and I like his conservative approach. He is a surgeon at heart, but won't recommend surgery to anyone unless they truly need it. I highly recommend grabbing an 8am appointment (first appointment of the day). I was in and out in just over an hour for my 8am appointment. I had two 9:30am appointments and I was not seen until about 11am (about a 1.5 hour wait) for one of them and nearly 12pm (an over 2 hour wait) for the other! Part 2 - Physical Therapy: I saw Joy, a physical therapist who is specially trained in the Watkins Protocol, a lumbar/trunk stabilization program. Joy received her training directly from Dr. Robert Watkins in California. (Dr. Edwards is the first to introduce the Watkins Protocol to Atlanta.) I saw Joy for 7 weeks. She is pleasant, friendly, and gentle but also assertive. My first appointment with her lasted about two hours because it involved an initial evaluation. Like a doctor, Joy was able to explain a lot of what was going on with my spine and why. She also explained the body mechanics behind the Watkins exercises and why they were beneficial to me. I noticed Joy seemed more knowledgeable and spent more time explaining things to me and answering my questions than physical therapists I've worked with in the past. After the first visit, my appointments lasted about 1.5 hours each. All of the physical therapy exercises are done in a room that overlooks Downtown Atlanta. From left to right, there are views of the Georgia Dome and Pemberton Place (Georgia Aquarium, World of Coke) to Tech Tower and Bobby Dodd Stadium. At 18 stories high, the view is very nice to have to work out to. Joy printed out a packet of exercises for me so I wouldn't forget to do them at home. She is flexible on scheduling and doesn't pressure you to make appointments. She's accommodating in that sense. Her methods and advice are sensible and practical. Other Comments: The rest of the staff - Keosha, Lina, and Sandy - are great. They are good at answering questions, being responsive, and taking care of insurance and appointment scheduling. Teresa, in billing, has also been helpful when it comes to insurance. The Atlanta Neurological and Spine Institute moved from the Atlanta Medical Center on Boulevard to Emory University Hospital Midtown on Peachtree, next to the Bank of America building. It is located on the 18th floor of the hospital. Parking in the parking deck costs up to $6 for one day. I normally paid $5 for each of my visits. The office does not validate parking.

I have had two separate operations on my back: the first was the top of my vertebrae and the second on my spinal column in my lower back. The results: I no longer walk with a cane and no more trouble breathing after four years of pain and suffering. After only three months recovery I am as active as always even though the true recovery period is approximately a year. Both my husband and I had done the research and knew we needed surgery but Dr. Edwards insisted we have second opinions and all proper tests before he agreed. He reviewed our X-ray results with us and the before and after images are amazing. Yes, the wait can sometimes be a bit long for your appointment but that is because he is not on a fifteen minutes and off you go time clock. Dr Edwards cares for the entire person and if you have special needs he will give you the time. The best of Dr. Edwards is that he is truely a man of God. He reminds us he is a "tool" for healing and always prays with his patients right before surgery. This humble man is truely blessed and his patients benefit. Hon. S Dempsey (retired)

I've been seeing Chiropractic Student Intern Sherry Wang at the Center for Health and Optimum…read morePerformance at Life University for my chronic lower back pain. I have two herniated discs and have tried just about everything, short of surgery, for pain relief. This includes seeing an orthopedic surgeon, three different physical therapists, a pain medicine doctor for epidurals, and an acupuncturist. In the end, none of those healthcare professionals could significantly reduce the pain I was experiencing. I wasn't completely sold on chiropractors based on what my doctors and physical therapists told me. Quite frankly, they didn't recommend chiropractors. My dad's chiropractor friend advised me to try acupuncture. My dad's neurologist colleague recommended disc distraction therapy. My orthopedist referred me to Midtown Neurology for IDD (intervertebral differential dynamics) therapy. Since my back pain stabilized at a low, manageable level (around a "1" or "2" on the 1-10 pain scale) and deterred by the cost, number of visits, and low success rate of IDD therapy, I did not follow through with that route. Already acquainted with Sherry outside the clinic, I'd learned she was looking for new patients. Life University isn't far from my workplace and I was told the services were inexpensive, so I decided to give it a shot. Life University has the largest chiropractic program in the world. The Center for Health and Optimum Performance ("C HOP") is a training ground for Life's chiropractic students. In a sense, the patients are like guinea pigs for the students. I probably wouldn't have come to C HOP if I didn't know Sherry beforehand. I know a couple of her patients and asked them about their experiences. I have to admit, I was apprehensive because I didn't want my back problems to get worse. However, I heard nothing but good things about Sherry and decided to go through with it. All student interns are monitored by a supervising clinician. In my case, it's Dr. Paula Rhodes. Dr. Rhodes was present during my initial evaluation and first few chiropractic adjustments. Sherry has been consulting with Dr. Rhodes throughout the course of my treatments. Dr. Rhodes is knowledgeable, helpful, and well-spoken. All the student interns work closely with supervising clinicians, so that should give prospective patients some peace of mind. The first two appointments consisted of evaluation, testing, X-rays, and paperwork. The first appointment lasted at least two hours. The evaluation consisted of a detailed personal and medical history and various body tests. The tests involved such things as strength, range of motion, weight, balance, and spinal measurements using computerized tools. One of the tests reminded me of a test in the Nintendo Wii Fit video game. Each of the clinic's departments is headed by real doctors, including the imaging lab where my X-rays were taken. Dr. Mark Maiyer oversaw my X-ray procedure. My initial treatments consisted of adjustments on the chiropractic table and Cox flexion distraction therapy. From what I've heard, the chiropractic table adjustments are pretty typical. The table is divided into different, moveable sections. The patient lies on the table. The chiropractor then applies pressure to various parts of the body and "drops" parts of the table. I believe this is to encourage/restore body alignment. I went through a few of these adjustments and didn't notice any difference in my body. That's not to say nothing happened, I just didn't feel any different afterwards. I do like the Cox flexion distraction therapy (http://youtu.be/YO8i681fc3E). This device is located in the Functional Rehabilitation department of the C HOP clinic, headed by Drs. Roxanne Caron and Joseph Haezebrouck. Cox flexion distraction involves getting strapped into another special table (an $8,000 table at that). On this table, the patient lies face down and his/her lower back is stretched out. While stretched out, the chiropractor moves the patient's lower body in different directions. Out of all the procedures I've tried up to this point, I feel immediate relief during Cox flexion distraction. I can feel my spine decompress and the disc spaces expand. The stretching and flexion motions are relaxing and therapeutic. Whether this will improve my back in the long run remains to be seen. During treatment, I visit the clinic 2 times per week. Each visit usually takes 30-45 minutes in total, but can vary depending on types of treatment. The treatments are indeed inexpensive. My evaluation was $24, X-rays $32, adjustments $15 each, and Cox therapy $8 each. Active students get a 50% discount. While C HOP does not accept insurance, I was able to successfully file health insurance claims myself. The treatments are also eligible under flexible spending (FSA). Notes: Students may observe during treatment. Going to a 15-minute educational "class" on chiropractic is also required.

I was in so much pain I couldn't even take a deep breath. My mother-in-law found Dr. Rob online and said I should try him out. I went to Team Chiropractic. I was impressed to say the least! Not only did he put my two ribs back in place (painlessly and quickly) He adjusted the rest of my body. Then earlier this year, I took my daughter in after she fell off a merry-go-round and hurt her hip. For reference, she is 12 and pretty skittish around any kind of examinations, but he made her feel super comfortable and at ease, always telling her what he was about to do and asking if that's ok. After he assessed her, he said he didn't think x-rays were necessary, but gave me that option if I wanted them anyway. You know he just isn't trying to charge you for the sake of driving up a bill. I agreed I didn't think it was needed, and we continued with the service. My daughter even commented how she was such at ease and that's been her favorite doctor ever.
