We've been taking our 14 month old to the mommy and me classes for a couple of months now and we've…read morereally enjoyed it. The classes are simple and do a good job at introducing her to the water. The facility is a bit old and outdated but it serves its purpose and the classes are reasonably priced. The staff is always warm and welcoming!

We came to kids first after taking a few classes at Anne arundel aquatic center. The problem there…read moreis they have kids repeat a class but then only focus on the skill they failed for a day or less. They continually fail because they don't get enough practice for that one skill. Our time at kids first started off wonderfully. We saw instant progress in their swimming ability, which was promising. It was well run by miss Mary. At some point miss Mary became seriously ill. She no longer was able to work here, which is where I think the major decline really started. Maintenance was almost nonexistent. The boys bathroom had 1 working toilet and 2 not functioning urinals. It was like this for over 6 months. More recently, the stall door was propped against a wall and a shower curtain was used for privacy. Ok for a short term solution, but they're often left in place for months at a time. Communication with teachers doesn't happen. One class comes in right after the other. You find out about their grade by a star system without any explanation. Not super helpful. They moved to a monthly payment system. If it works for them, great. Problem is, kids get stuck in one level/class. There's no incentive to have the kids move to another level because the payment will automatically renew monthly. Instructors aren't as always hands on as they need to be. My son has trouble treading water. His instructor yells at him when he can't do it. Does she offer to help with his form? No. She just yells louder. Not really helpful. Seems like they need a dedicated office manager who can oversee the day to day operations and keep up things like maintenance. Then the swimming instructors could focus on teaching and communicating more with parents.

As a father and legal guardian, I was denied meaningful participation in my son's summer camp experience. I'm a disabled veteran recovering from my second surgery this year, yet I remain actively involved, having volunteered over 120 hours at my son's school and coached his youth sports teams in limited capacities. In June 2025, I respectfully offered to volunteer, noting my Red Cross certification, active background checks (AACPS, Fort Meade CYS), and educational credentials. I received no response. Instead, I was quietly blocked from my son's records, my account was deleted without warning, and I was denied updates, even after repeatedly confirming my legal rights. Over six weeks, I made multiple good-faith efforts to resolve the issue. I sent documentation, explained my guardianship status, and asked for access to be restored. I was ignored. Only after some pro se legal escalation did YMCA legal counsel finally respond, but still, no resolution or response was offered. This wasn't just poor customer service. It reflected a systemic disregard for parental rights and transparency. For someone like me, a Black father to a mixed-race child and a veteran navigating medical recovery and legal barriers, it felt personal and a violation of my parental rights. As of today, September 3, 2025, my responses remain unanswered and my accounts and access to my son remain severed, despite formerly being a paying member. If you're a parent, especially one in a unique family situation, I urge you to advocate for your place in your child's life. Institutions should never get to decide how involved a loving, responsible parent is allowed to be. We all deserve better.

There's nothing for them to do and they cannot be left to play ping pong or air hockey while you work out. You have to watch them the entire time. Even if your kids are responsible and quiet. Pool: is the only reason I joined. It was either closed, booked by swim teams year round or cloudy and dirty. The three chances I was able to get in the pool it was dirty, cloudy and had bandaids, debris etc on the bottom. Very unsanitary. Pros: grandfathered in bar. Most of the staff are nice. I had a negative experience at SPRFC (mainly beyond their control) and the follow on interaction I experienced was less than excellent customer service. I've been a non-member patron recently, taking swimming lessons through and at SPRF on Saturday afternoons. During my lesson on July 8th, someone entered the men's locker room off the pool area, shimmied my lock, and stole my wallet (including my military retiree ID, my government civilian ID, my drivers license, a credit card and about $50 cash), my phone, and my car's key fob. So they had all my identification, access to my car, and knew my home address. There was no one in a management position on site. The front desk clerk allowed me to use the phone behind the desk to call the police and to call home for someone to bring me my backup key fob (thankfully the car was not entered or stolen). While I was making these calls, the front desk employee texted her "manager". The manager told her she would be able to look at the video in the pool area in about an hour. I provided the employee my name and phone number when she said her manager asked for it. The responding officers talked to the employee (and maybe the manager) while I was out of earshot. The officers informed me they had inquired about video. The manager didn't ask to speak to me nor did she reach out to me. I called SPRFC twice in the following days to see if the manager/Director of Operations was available. During the first call on Monday, I spoke to Chloe, who was aware of the theft and apologized for it occurring. She said the manager was unavailable and she would text her that I had called, asking for a callback. On Wednesday, having not received a call, I tried again. Chloe answered once again and when I asked if the manager was in, she responded, "she hasn't called you yet? I'm sorry" and then she said she would send another message. That night, still not having heard from anyone in a management level, I sent the Director of Operations an email. I admit I was frustrated. I said the claims of excellent customer service were not evident in my situation and I asked what the process to cancel swim lessons would be since I had a real concern about people having unfettered access to the locker room while I'd be concentrating on my lesson. Prior to the Director of Operations reading my email on Thursday, she finally called. I was unable to answer, and she left a voicemail. She apologized for what happened and said they had found video suspicious footage of someone going in and out of the locker room during he timeframe, and she said it would take so time for that footage to be pulled. She suggested that I contact the police (she had the case number and the phone number to contact) and let them know that SPRFC had footage that would take several days into next week before they could pull the footage off. Then she said when they do get it pulled off she would contact me so I could contact the police. Then she read my email which she didn't like me pointing out that I had not received excellent customer service. She said they take things like this issue very seriously and that it takes awhile to review the video. She said she was in for a bit on Monday but had to leave for an emergency and was back in the office on Wednesday, when she reviewed four hours of footage "for me". (The provided timeframe was from 11:55Am - 1:00PM, so I'm not sure why four hours of video needed to be reviewed.) She told me SPRFC was not responsible for anything I put in the locker. I agree with that...that's why I put a lock on the locker, and I understand I'm still doing this at my own risk. She said she thinks their customer service is excellent and that she was upset to read my email claiming it wasn't. And she said she will not release the videos "at all now until I m contacted by the police". She ended by saying she wished I had been a little nicer in how I reached out. All I wanted was for someone in a position of authority to reach out in a timely manner. She had several opportunities to talk to me...Saturday just after the incident, Monday when she arrived at work, some time on Wednesday...I didn't plan to blame them for the theft...I wanted to discuss how easily it is for anyone to get into the pool area, especially on Saturday and Sunday when there are so many lessons going on, without any kind of security measures in place besides passive security video, and see if there could be any assurances of tightening up security measures so I'd be comfortable enough to continue lessons there. This time it was just a theft...hopefully SPRFC will institute some measures so nothing like this, or worse, happens again.

We'd show up for meets and our location coaches wouldn't be there, and the Annapolis coaches didn't really know our kids. It's a great place to swim if you just want to keep them swimming without doing team, but the competition experience was very uncomfortable. They had my son all season, yet in 7 weeks with the summer swim coach, they fixed all of my swimmer's problems that took all year with no success!! And these were things we repetitively asked how to help fix them! Our local coaches said they can never understand how Annapolis never has any openings, but their swimmers don't show as much improvement as other teams do. It wasn't until the last month of the session that the coach actually moved from the end of the pool! They'd say swim this, go and then they'd pull out their phones. We have since moved to another swim team but we felt like it was a whole year of wasted time and money. Funny thing though - you'd start the session with 20 kids or so. By the end? You'd get 5-6 that would show up on a given day. Word is only around 8 people have signed up for the fall 2016 session. People vote with their feet and their money. I'd look elsewhere before signing up at the Glen burnie location. In fact, had I known how it was, I was offered to be wait-listed at the Annapolis pool in the beginning. I probably would have rather waited than keep my swimmer in the water in Glen burnie.
