The site has memorials for citizens of Sheffield who served in wars, including wars in Spain and Korea. There are plenty of benches to relax and rest, whether you want to take in the views, just relax while walking around the city, or enjoy a snack or beverage on a sunny day. At peak times, it can get quite crowded and uncomfortable due to the noise, and a lack of security and order can ruin one's enjoyment sadly, having some staff members monitoring the park for security and cleanliness reasons would go a long way to make it an even better place. 4*

HERDINGS PARK, Sheffield, situated three and a half miles to the South East of Sheffield city…read morecentre. The park is served by Supertram and the 47/48 bus, which have their terminals beside the park. At the moment there's nothing much in the park apart from a bowling green, two football fields and a badly vandalised kiddies playground. However, plans are now being brought to fruitation with the erection of a new multi-purpose pitch. And in the near future Sheffield City Council will transform this dreary park even further by erecting more amenities to cater for the older generation as well as the young generation. The thing that's different about this park compared to any of Sheffield's other parks is, firstly, it's location, it's the only park in Sheffield that is located beside two County Boundaries, the boundaries of South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire form the park's south boundary. And secondly, this park is located on top of Sheffield's second highest land area, thus giving tremendous views northwards across the city and partly westward towards the Peak District National Park.

I just love going to botanical gardens to look at what each city preserves or keeps in their garden, many will have other plants around the world. There is a water fountain that leads through the aisle to the green house. Weddings are held here and I can visualize the beauty of it. The green house is bigger than I thought it'll be when I was inside. There is also a bear pit, reminds me of The Gladiator. It is very beautiful and will have to come back one day again when it is warmer. Sheffield will always have a special place in my heart.

But in fact "GLEADLESS COMMON" is actually a large open grassy space that has been transformed in recent years by the Parks Dept. into a lovely parkland which has lots of footpaths - some of which are tarmaced and the others dirt-tracked. There is at least three football fields, an area set aside as a wild flower meadow which during spring, summer and early autumn is alive in a mass of different coloured wild flowers. There's a high fenced tarmac surfaced tennis court and along the north boundary of the park there's an area set aside as a wildlife reserve where wild animals such as foxes and rabbits have now started to live. There's a Youth Meeting area in the centre of the park with facilities for a game of netball, a climbing wall as also been erected for their use, plus a covered shelter just incase it rains whilst they are there having fun. There's benches provided around the park for older visitors to sit on and admire the surrounding views. The best thing of all that's in this park is the kiddies fenced playground. It has swings for toddlers as well as young children, a large child-save climbing frame complete with mini slide, plus other play amenities. There's also benches and seats for mums and dads to sit on whilst watching their kiddies play. The park is well patrolled by South Yorkshire Police and city council rangers to prevent vandals wrecking the facilities provided for everybody's enjoyment.

With its large glass exterior, the building set within the Winter Garden is quite spectacular; filled with exotic plants and, on this occassion, the odd morris dancer, there really is something for everyone to be interested in. Also within this building lies the art gallery, currently holding a quite intriguing exhibition on metal work (who knew that there were SO many things made of metal? a 'bachelor's' tea pot which perfectly holds one cup of tea? a PEA knife which holds peas perfectly ready for you to roll into your mouth? This is education at its finest) and a shop with plenty of locally sourced goods for those looking for a special Sheffield themed gift. Other shops include an arts&crafts boutique and cupcake stall, giving this part of the city a real edge on the mainstream high street.

The Trough is located in Gleadless Valley, just off a footpath beside Rollestone Wood, three miles…read moreSouth East of Sheffield City Centre. The Trough is a small ancient stone built sink that was used about 250 years ago by woodland workers for the purpose of giving their ponies somewhere to drink water. In it's heyday The Trough would have been a very busy meeting point for the local community of Gleadless Valley which included the woodland workers whos job it was to coppice trees to create white coal (charcoal) which was used to fire blast furnises in Sheffield's iron industries. Unfortunately, times have changed, The Trough is very difficult to find now due to being burried by overgrown woodland vegetation. To find this ancient horse trough you must seek the assistance of a Woodland Ranger from Sheffield's Parks Dept., if you're interested in local history then The Trough is well worth discovering.

A fantastic municipal sports centre, Ponds Forge is a centre with a reputation for excellent…read morestandards and is always modernising something to keep itself up to date. With one of the only public 50m swimming pools in the country, it is used by swimmers up to professional level and the diving pool is currently being used to train olympic hopefuls who travel from all over the UK to train there. In keeping with it's public ethos there is also a separate fun leisure pool with flumes and waves and plenty of classes and activities for adults and children. In addition to the pools, there's also a huge, well-equipped gym and studios for a variety of exercise classes. The centre is very clean and welcoming and the temperatures are really good throughout. The monthly membership also gives you access to 3 other Sheffield venues including the Don Valley running track and is exceptionally good value. You can also pay as you go. Events are regularly held at the centre including international swim meets and there's a conference centre available for hire with catering for corps.

It's close to the tram and bus station…read more The centre has just gone under a bit of a refurbishment with a new members gym being built, which was well over due. This means the gym has been moved from the main entrance creating a spacious lobby and some seating. The new gym has all the facilities you would expect, with new changing rooms which are a little warm. There are more machinery and more space in the gym allowing more people to work out at a time. There swimming pools are still the same and is a good place to do some lane swimming as long as there are no event on which writes off most weekends which is a shame. The classes are good and the instructors are really motivated and friendly. The centre has a car park which does charge but also has really small parking spaces, there is some street parking but is time limited to an hour not much use. When it becomes free parking in the evenings its really busy and could struggle to get parked. The price of membership is not too bad and does give access to more then one gym as they have a few other centres within the city. It is cheaper to join for a 12 months. Also there isn't a joining fee like some gyms have.

The centre dates back to the seventies but has several refurbishments and today offers a high standard of service to the many people that use the facilities on a regular basis. Set in a large park there are great views over Meadowhall. The centre boasts two pools which are used by many groups and sessions. A large Sports Hall where exhibitions and displays are often held, as well as the usual Squash and Badminton courts. The Judo club is well respected and the outside, flood lit football pitches are always fully booked.
