New springs, foam and covering. They came in on time - in fact earlier than expected - and did a lovely job on it. We supplied the fabric and overall the cost for fabric (8metres at 30 per metre) and upholstery was around 650 - it would have cost us 1500 to buy the sofa new so it's definitely a route worth considering if you find a second-hand sofa whose shape you like. You can get really cheap sofas these days that might look good at first but don't last more than a couple of years. A decently constructed sofa will run and run. I found the other two places that quoted were keen to supply the fabric, one charging a five euro per metre extra for supplied fabric. These guys were more laid back -- there was no hard sell, just old-fashioned nice manners. Tony is the older gent who deals with the public - a lovely country man who makes it very straightforward and doesn't offer any annoying sales patter. An equally decent younger guy took it away and delivered it back good as new. Time will tell how long we get out of it, but all in all, we're happy with the job and would recommend this crowd. Murphy Sheehy have an extensive range of upholstery fabrics if you do decide to go this route - it is more expensive than what you pay if you buy the upholsterer's fabric, but if those generic ones aren't your thing, it's really not much more to order yourself.

So, I've now decided I'm going to make a kitchen seat for myself and sure I may as well make a headboard as well. Capel St in case you didn't know, is the place in Dublin to go for all your furniture / fabric needs. There are apholsterists (is that a word?!), shops that specialise in foam, customised sofa makers, antique shops, and a whole lot else. Capel St Upholstery a bit of a strange one because once you're inside, you could easily be in someone's workshop out the back of their house. You'd never know you were in the centre of town, and you'd never know just how much they do. I bought some pieces of foam, cut to fit, rolled up and stuck in my car for me, as well as some buttons, covered there and then on the spot, and some vinyl fabric. The guy who runs the place seems as if he's been doing it for years - he knows his sh%t and will be happy to advise & assist to the best of his (considerable) knowledge & experience.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. last september I paid a deposit to Ashbourne upholstery to recover a 3…read morepiece suite that was in perfect condition. I was tired of the pattern and wanted to change it. I requested no change to the upholstery itself and even requested the same facings was to be reused on the front of the Chairs. I had used them before to cover the same suite (when brand new as I did not like the suite when it arrived on the initial purchase). Back then a perfect job was done so I had no hesitation in going back to them last year. A few days after I paid the deposit I got a call to say the material was not available and it would be 6 weeks before it came in to Dublin from the UK. I was also advised no receipt for the deposit would be issued as they werent near a post office to send one ?? which was the first red flag. Between September and November I got numerous calls about the material not arriving and delays of one kind and another. Finally in the middle of November my suite was collected. I had all the instructions written down and pinned to the suite before it left my home with another conversation with the pick up person (who incidentially requested a hug when he arrived) I dont know him from adam.....another major red flag that the company was not what it had been previously. I knew the owner to be honest and totally trustworthy but that was not my experience with the new partner in the business. My suite was delivered back to me two weeks before christmas.....totally destroyed. The upholstery had been removed and the suite was one third of the size it was when it left my home and all the support was gone out of it. The seat and back cushions did not fit the frame ,the arm rest upholstery was left hanging over the sides and were not even uniformed to the other chair or couch and the threads on the Back cushions were dangling over the frame. I spoke to Tom Fitzsimons the owner and was promised it would be put right before christmas. I got no explanation as to the missing upholstery which had been in a leather casing in the whole suite so I couldnt fatham what had happened to it. In the end the suite was not put right and I was given a refund. I got no explanation as to what happened and no compensation for the destroyed suite. When I dealt with this company before honesty and trust were paramount but im afraid to say that is no longer the case in my experience. BEWARE
