Of three places that we got quotes from, here was joint first most reasonable - the fact that they…read morewere also very nice to deal with got them the job: reupholstering a once-decent now utterly wrecked old sofa, the frame being the only intact part. New springs, foam and covering. They came in on time - in fact earlier than expected - and did a lovely job on it. We supplied the fabric and overall the cost for fabric (8metres at 30 per metre) and upholstery was around 650 - it would have cost us 1500 to buy the sofa new so it's definitely a route worth considering if you find a second-hand sofa whose shape you like. You can get really cheap sofas these days that might look good at first but don't last more than a couple of years. A decently constructed sofa will run and run. I found the other two places that quoted were keen to supply the fabric, one charging a five euro per metre extra for supplied fabric. These guys were more laid back -- there was no hard sell, just old-fashioned nice manners. Tony is the older gent who deals with the public - a lovely country man who makes it very straightforward and doesn't offer any annoying sales patter. An equally decent younger guy took it away and delivered it back good as new. Time will tell how long we get out of it, but all in all, we're happy with the job and would recommend this crowd. Murphy Sheehy have an extensive range of upholstery fabrics if you do decide to go this route - it is more expensive than what you pay if you buy the upholsterer's fabric, but if those generic ones aren't your thing, it's really not much more to order yourself.

So, I've now decided I'm going to make a kitchen seat for myself and sure I may as well make a headboard as well. Capel St in case you didn't know, is the place in Dublin to go for all your furniture / fabric needs. There are apholsterists (is that a word?!), shops that specialise in foam, customised sofa makers, antique shops, and a whole lot else. Capel St Upholstery a bit of a strange one because once you're inside, you could easily be in someone's workshop out the back of their house. You'd never know you were in the centre of town, and you'd never know just how much they do. I bought some pieces of foam, cut to fit, rolled up and stuck in my car for me, as well as some buttons, covered there and then on the spot, and some vinyl fabric. The guy who runs the place seems as if he's been doing it for years - he knows his sh%t and will be happy to advise & assist to the best of his (considerable) knowledge & experience.
