I've spent a bit over the last three weeks in Germany, mostly staying in the Munich area, and of…read moreall of the places I have visited for mealtimes, my hands-down, recurring favorite is most certainly Cafe Schuntner. The wide array of homemade dessert options, alone, stands out in a city full of bakeries and cafes.
Seriously, all of the cakes and pies are actually homemade, and each one I've seen looks like an expert crafting from the kitchen of some Food Network dessert master. Now, don't get it twisted--they also TASTE like the work of a dessert master. The sweetness is so perfectly balanced, both accenting and allowing the natural flavors of the main ingredients, like a schokotarte with a hidden layer of freaking APRICOT JAM!!! MIND AND TASTE BUDS BLOWN!!!
Beyond the desserts (which clearly stand strongly, front and center) are a litany of wonderful food options, like the Spinat-Kokos-Suppe, which was easily the most flavorful, balanced, warming, and wonderful soup I've had in my entire life--at least top three, and I can't recall two others that actually come close to topping it. The coffee is well done, the assortment of Brot is well done, and in my final days here, there was even a RUM CAKE...with real rum, by the way, not some cheap, strange rum flavoring. Prepare to be nice and warm, with a fuzzy vibe, akin to the smiles and familiar after-effects of a mid-afternoon glass of Heidelbeere Glühwein.
This may be the most-missed cafe I've visited, here, and if at all possible, I will return for more of this goodness. If you find yourself anywhere near Sendlinger-München, love yourself enough to find your way here.
