When we visited on a rainy Monday afternoon and there were a couple of people inside, sipping on coffee and working. Traditional Nanaimo ($5.99) - This Nanaimo Bar is very thin, about half the height as compared to Bar 1. It shears while cutting, causing pieces to break off in chunks rather than cleaning going through. This happens to both the icing in the middle and the top and I'm not sure what causes it. The top layer has a nice rich chocolatety taste. The bottom layer has finer coconut shreds and a nice cocoa flavor, mixed with crushed silvered almonds for nuttiness and crunch. The layer is able to easily shatter. It's dry and almost powdery in texture. The middle icing isn't that noteworthy other than being sweet. As a whole, the bar is hefty, hard and very dense. It's very sweet. (3/5) Salted Caramel Nanaimo ($5.99) - This is similar in texture to the traditional with the same shattering grittiness. The middle layer is caramel icing and top layer has some flaky salt sprinkled on top. Otherwise again it's very sweet and crumbly. (3/5) I can't say I was a huge fan of these Nanaimo bars. They are definitely higher quality than the last bakery we visited, but they are a bit too dry, gritty, and powdery for my tastes. Based on my enjoyment of the food, I would normally give Bocca Cafe a 3 star rating, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and raise them to a 4, especially because the employees were very nice. Maybe i just don't like Nanaimo bars that much! Washrooms - One unisex room.

This is a great cafe to grab a coffee, any other hot drinks &/or something tasty to eat. Word to…read morethe wise, kitchen shuts an hour prior to actual closing time. So no tasty sandwiches that last hour. However, you can still order the remaining baked treats that last hour there open (& really, that's not a bad thing if you have a sweet tooth!). The layout feels like it's two shops & allows for lots mixed seating & one great long table with giant benches. This also means one needs to be able to navigate through tighter spots easily if you're sitting down before your order is ready (or for my friends that look for accessible work arounds, going through the doors opposite to the sign suggestions to avoid any unfortunate drink/food disasters would be a good strategy). There's separate entrance/exit doors but the way the long line up to order occurs inside, the exit door is smarter to enter into the cafe (if you're able). There's also some tables outside along the street & a bench along the wall. If the weather is decent, I usually opt for that outside option. Otherwise, I prepare myself for a louder cafe experience being that this location is busy right to the end of the day. The staff is always friendly here. I greatly appreciate that the cashier took time to ask about any soy in certain baked treat options I was considering (after finding out I couldn't do a tasty turkey sandwich I was hoping for). As Qualicum Beach is known for their senior population, this place (like many others) has the basics checked off for accessibility. However, if I had anyone joining me with a walker or wheelchair, I would definitely suggest we find a table first & then I would go up to order for everyone. This being even with a cane, I find it is really hard to navigate back to the tables once you've got the order. They have a small bathroom tucked at the back but you need to be able to navigate around many tables to reach it. The lightning never bothers my eyes in here but at full capacity, anyone with hearing issues or noise sensitivity would have issues. Overall, a decent local place with a lot of regular tasty menu items.

A sign noted shortened hours due to shortage of staff, but I didn't feel the shortage in any way. Service was prompt and we received our orders almost as soon as we ordered and paid. Since we already had breakfast on our first visit, I opted for a coffee and a marbled rye toast, only to be told the marbled rye toast was discontinued and they really needed to erase that item from the menu. Not a big deal; I got whole wheat toast instead. It was amusing to see the next day, the marbled rye option was still listed on the blackboard, without even having the "sold out" sticky sign taped over it. The hubby ordered one of the most delicious vanilla cold brews I have ever tried: full on vanilla flavour, but not overly sweet. To sound cheesy, this location does coffee very seriously while providing an excellent ambiance and service. Would have appreciated a little more current menu, but other than that, I wished we had a location closer to home!

I chose the has browns and added a side of sourdough. The eggs were cooked perfectly, the bacon nice and crispy as specified, along with a slice of tomato and some fresh basil which was a nice touch. My London Fog left a little to be desired, but that was but a small blemish in an otherwise excellent breakfast/brunch! If you are in Parksville I'd heartily recommend the Brazen Poppy Bakery Cafe. We'll be stopping on our way to Victoria tomorrow for sure.
