I originally discovered this little nature walk when walking to Downtown Walnut Creek from Ygnacio Valley Rd. If you follow the Iron Horse Trail towards downtown, after the YVR overpass, then cross over the railroad bridge and bear right, you'll come across this little interpretive Creek Walk. As you head down the paved path, you'll see the creek on your right, and a series of panels describing the wildlife and ecology of Walnut Creek. You'll have gorgeous views of Mount Diablo when you look in the other direction as well as the large green area that's suitable for soccer, frisbee or running around with your kids or pets.
There's a few benches spread out, so I think it's great spot to bring your lunch. They also re-landscaped the area about 1 year ago or so and I've seen it attract butterflies, hummingbirds and other bird life of the area.
Being that I am not originally from the Bay Area, I've learned a bit about Walnut Creek from this walk. It's also a scenic route in to town. As you continue to follow the creek, you'll cross another bridge which spills out in to the parking lot of Civic Park. You can either cut through there to your destination or bear left and continue to follow the creek. Either way, it's a nice little stroll either on it's own or as part of a longer walk/run.
Melinda C. mentions in her Yelp review some ways you can volunteer to keep the area clean. I've participated in one of the Creek Clean Up days and it's not just about picking up trash-they also have projects to remove invasive plants. I found that to be an interesting component to the area and what plant life is native to the area or not-I strongly encourage volunteering if you can!
