There were some free papers scattered around for your reading pleasure and there is even a small shop in here apparently (well it is a small village). Perhaps this mass appeal is how it manages to be the only pub in the town to make it into the latest edition of the Good Beer Guide (which is how I found it). I had a nice pint of a session ale (3.8%, but not lacking in taste) called Neap Tide, which turned out to be the cheapest pint I came across in the whole of this part of Devon (£2.10). My fellow drinkers seemed to be very accommodating when it came to making room for strangers at their tables. There are no pumps, the beer is dispensed from barrels in a side room. The person behind the bar was very friendly (especially as I had wandered behind the bar myself) and (once I had slunk round to the correct side of the counter) served me Summa That (the name of the beer, from the Branscombe brewery). A good pub anytime, but another one that must be even better in the summer when you can take your drink outside. We were given a menu, which was apparently the wrong one, and after ordering plonked ourselves in the corner with a beer. Food arrived quickly, and it was tasty. Better than average pub food, nowhere near gastropub fare. My gammon egg and chips was fab, just what I wanted. Decent London Pride too (yes, I go all the way to Devon and buy a pint of London Pride, but like I say, it was an average pub). The boy's lasagne looked pretty tasty too, although I'm not sure why they dressed his salad with sweet chilli sauce. He didn't mind, he likes sweet chilli sauce. I think that's weird. But the evening was made pretty exhausting when literally every single person came to ask if everything was OK. Once is fine, but a couple of them even asked twice. And then they came to clear our plates about five times too. Even the chef came over. It was pretty frustrating by the end. I know they were being friendly, and just doing their job, but I don't want my meal interrupted ten times. Once will suffice. So, firm three stars from me. A good three stars though, you'd be just as comfy drinking a few pints.I can neither confirm nor deny that they'll ask you how that is seven times. But still, I'd rather smiles than frowns, especially in village pubs which can swing one way or the other. Not that you get much choice in this cute little village, mind. As a result it has an eclectic atmosphere that mostly works very well. There are sometimes live bands on, and the Sunday Quiz is very popular (tends to run term time only due to relying on students).
