Very unreliable! I booked a private class several months in advance of my husband's 30th birthday…read moreas a surprise because he had always wanted to do a glassblowing class. Starting a week before the class, I reached out about 6 times to try to confirm the appointment via email, phone call, text, and Facebook. No response from a live person although I got a vacation message from the email. I started to be concerned that the appointment had been overlooked. Anyway, I had a flight booked (my husband and I are living apart for work temporarily) so I flew down to Knoxville from Chicago the night before the booking. That day I finally got an automated email confirming the appointment, so I figured it was on. I called a couple hours before the class just to double confirm since I hadn't actually talked to a real person yet and what do you know, someone finally picked up the phone. And then told me oops sorry, the studio isn't open, forgot to tell you. ..... Seriously? That's absolutely not a way to run a business. I'm all for supporting local artists but I just can't justify supporting anyone who treats potential customers like this. It really screwed me and the plans I had made well in advance for my husband's birthday. Such a disappointment. Don't waste your time with this guy.

Owner and glassblower Matt Salley is a wonderful person for leading fun, educational classes that…read morehelps you learn the art and craft of glassblowing while creating your own works of art. I visited his shop a bit outside of the city on a chilly day in December, which was probably a good time of year to take a class because of all the heat put off. I took a class on making a Christmas ornament, which was a wonderful way to start off my holiday season and will give me something to always remember this adventure. The studio is a garage at his house, and it is a working studio. This is where Matt makes all kinds of glassworking himself that he sells throughout the region and on-demand. It's not pretty, but it's functional. He is also a great teacher who doesn't mind people asking all kinds of questions. He treats participants in his classes like human beings, rather than one of a hundred people in a general education class. The classes are taught on demand throughout the year, with special times like the holidays with more classes. This is definitely a place to visit to touch on your artistic side and create something fairly unique that not everyone can say they've done. I'm definitely a fan and hope to visit him again soon...and this time I'm wearing long sleeves so I don't singe the hairs on my arm! TIP: Classes are not offered every day of the week, and they aren't offered steadily throughout the year. They are usually scheduled on demand, so be sure to call ahead to plan your adventure.
