Ultimately, I was very disappointed with my experience with Butchart. On my first visit that was…read moresupposed to be 90 minutes but lasted less than 60 minutes, he diagnosed me with a genetic heart defect after asking me if I had a family member die of a heart attack. I was told to take Folate for this genetic heart defect. While this was a red-flag for me, I was still hopeful. He also prescribed me supplements for my condition prior to lab testing because he knew the problem and told me that I would be feeling better in less than two weeks. In fact, he told me that I would be feeling so good that I could stop taking my prescribed medicine (another red-flag). Please note that only the lab tests are covered by insurance (but see below) and the company that does the lab testing also provides the supplements that cannot be found elsewhere. After six months, and not feeling better (and actually getting worse due to one of his special formula mixes that he insisted I continue taking because, as he indicated, sometimes you get worse before you get better) he indicated I should have the lab tests done again. Well, the insurance company rejected being told to pay for the lab tests again and Butchart said he would work out a special deal with me and I could pay him $300 (or so) directly -- hmm (if I recall correctly, the company that does the lab testing charges the insurance company ~$2000 for the lab testing). Well, I told him I was not interested in investing another $300 in lab testing from the same company who provides the supplements that were supposed to make me feel better right away. When I told him this, he stopped communicating with me. Overall, I feel Butchart does a nice job of communicating with his patients by e-mail (notice that he directly e-mails the patient). But he also acts as if he knows everything while speaking badly of all other doctors as ignorant of how things really work in the mind and body. When things do not improve, as in my case, he is simply done and is not interested in trying to figure out another solution that works for both the patient and himself. Ultimately, I left poorer and no better off than when I first entered his practice.

Due to the sheer incompetence of this staff, we are consulting a medical malpractice attorney. This "doctor" may spend all of 2-3 minutes on average with us, does not listen to patients, does not correctly remember / state patient history even though it's in the records she's reading from, extremely dismissive of any questions by patient, absolutely will not discuss alternative medicines from the ones she wants to prescribe ($$ kickbacks?), has actually walked out in the middle of a patient conversation to not return (inexcusable!), long waits after scheduled appointment times (regularly 1hr +), sent a patient home from multiple visits when regularly complaining of stomach / lower pelvic / leg pain informing that it's just cramps/gas (no testing performed), when in reality, it was cancer!, sent a patient back home who experienced what is believed to be several TIA strokes with absolutely no tests / instruction or follow up!, and the list actually goes on and on! Visit this lady at your own peril. If all you need is someone to prescribe an antibiotic when you have a minor infection, she's probably capable, but if you want someone who can actually listen, comprehend, and evaluate your complaints/concerns while considering your medical history, and then takes action based on the findings, this is not the person to visit.

He is also a board certified obstetrician and delivered my son before he became his pediatrician. I have been a registered nurse at UVA for 5 years, and Dr. Campbell is absolutely the "go to" doctor for all health professionals...but also perfect for anybody who needs a gentle, non-judgmental, down to earth approach. Dr. Campbell is extremely empathetic, always takes my concerns very seriously, takes the time to answer all of my questions in depth...and always presents the most practical-yet-evidence based options. He has an equal respect for low intervention and the power of medicine, and will always be flexible when it comes to your personal views on medical care. His office staff is incredibly helpful and the nurses have always given wonderful medical direction over the phone. Surprisingly enough, we never have trouble getting an appointment the same day even though he and his nurse practitioner (who is also fabulous) are the only PCPs in the practice. The wait times are reasonable too, considering the small practice, and I have never minded waiting a few extra minutes because I know that he will never ever rush me when it's my turn to be seen. The only negative part about my experience with Dr. Campbell is that I would be devastated to have to move away from Charlottesville...because it means I would have to find another doctor...And nobody could ever replace him!
