I grew up in Devon and I used to visit Cranks as a child 30 years ago when vegetarianism was still seen as a somewhat dubious eccentricity and organic food was a glint in some hippy's eye. Except at Cranks.
They still serve familiar classics like Homity Pie and quiches as well as lovely salads from a sort of buffet line and the food is as good now as it was then. The big difference today is that The Good Life has gone mainstream and vegetarians (like me) are not Cranks anymore. We're all hippies now.
I visited Cranks this week with my wife and had a lovely walk round the grounds at Dartington Hall and a tasty, filling lunch at Cranks. Big bowls of soup, cheese scones followed by epic quiche and salad plates. Nostalgia never tasted so good. read more
