The owner of this shop has clearly chosen each piece with equal care and although the furniture is stacked in quite a haphazard and informal way you can see they're all individual and quality pieces. The low lamp lighting adds to this warm atmosphere and casts a flattering light on the pieces. There seems to be a particular niche for weathered furniture in here, you'll be likely to come across pastel blue chairs with chipped paint and leather trunks with rubbed edges. There are more stylized things on offer too, like old tea tins for quirky storage and old fishing nets for an unusual wall decoration! The prices of the pieces here are in the $500-$1000 mark for a good dining chair, but the quality and comfort means that you're buying an investment piece which will most likely increase in value over time. The downstairs has fancy re-upholstered lounges and armchairs, while the upstairs has dining chairs. Despite the name, A Pair Of Chairs do sell chairs singly, and they also have coffee tables and cabinets, but the emphasis is undoubtedly on the chairs. This is not a store where you will be left alone, the owners will definitely approach you and gently push sales. There's a lot of teak, a lot of Parker, and a lot of 50s style going on.... It's not everyone's taste, but if you're into mid-twentieth century design (specifically that straight-backed 50s look), then you've found the right strip of shops on Regent street to keep you busy. Here, you can buy the items unrestored or nice and fixed up - depends how much you want to pay. Last time I was here the woman owner told me to supervise the shop while she went upstairs, which was trusting and I took the responsibility seriously (ahem), of course .... nobody came in .... Ici et la has beautiful old decoration objects from all over the world. From magical local shells to wooden and metal tables, chairs or lamp to handmade bags. Infact they have a seamstress in the store that creates blankets etc. with your initials. If I would live in Sydney, my interior design would be well influenced by this store.

One day, not…read morelong ago, I was driving down Cleveland Street and much to my surprise, in one of the terraces was a big window with curtains drawn all around it. Displayed in this house/shop was one vintage bedside table and a cute set of drawers. There was a mobile phone number to call if you were interested in the few items. Intrigued, I parked and called the number. A lady answered and showed me into her home. The floor was scattered with works in progress. Little chairs, dressers, old mirrors. Upstairs her partner is a carpenter and builder. It's a strange little set up but what a great marketing tool. There's a lot of traffic on that busy street and it certainly piqued my interest enough to purchase a repainted 1920's bedside table. It's really cute and she has done a great job in retaining it's original beauty. The other day I was passing again and they have a retro bathroom sink and a kitchen sink in their window. They do furniture, rugs, masks, lighting, ceramics, art, glassware, mirrors - a whole range of stuff which listing it seems to take something away from the beauty and exclusivity of them. I also like the fact that they stock a lot of local designers but also collect from overseas so the range in variety of product and taste is wide. The textiles from Africa, Australian artifacts, Egyptian crystal chandeliers and European ceramic pieces - it takes you to far away places without paying for the plane ticket out of here. Apart from filling your home with beautiful furnishings I find Exhibit is a good place to shop for wedding presents.
