In the pub, there is a nice and cosy front bar as well as a larger tap room. The bar with an always good selection of local beer served directly from the barrel is sandwiched in between. The beer is superb. Across the courtyard is the hotel/restaurant. I can't really comment on this because I've only ever gone to the pub. When I was last there, a large group of Napoleonic war re-enactment enthusiasts were holding their AGM in the restaurant. Zut alors!

Lovely grounds for the photographs with views across the countryside. Nice patio for, if the weather is agreeable, getting together after the service and before the meal for a drink. The 'dance floor' area is large and is exaggerated by the mirrored walls giving an effect of being in a huge room. Nice lighting and sound quality. Finchingfield, with its duck pond, nice pubs, tea shops and church is worth a visit. Wander around and check out the windmill, the oldest in Essex and the only one of originally seven that survives. As I have said, a nice choice of tea rooms around the green at reasonable prices. But, if you wish a stronger beverage, The Fox pub will draw you in. A nice afternoon stroll so relaxing. Lucky people that live there.
Review number two. The Mulberry House is a very nice venue for a wedding or afternoon tea. I had…read morewanted to treat my mother and sister to a traditional high-tea, but had struggled to find a location in London that was within my budget. Most places in London cost around 25GBP or more for an afternoon tea. The Mulberry House, probably because it's not in London, was much more reasonable. Having afternoon tea here is definitely an experience. It was very relaxing to drink endless cups of tea, chat, and have a light bite. The dinning room is beautiful with lush high back chairs. The waitstaff are friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere is peaceful. In fact, there was quite a large group in the dinning room, but the atmosphere almost demands quiet and even the children complied. I definitely recommend having tea here as it reacts the earlier sentiments of a slower paced life with afternoon tea--most likely, and definitely in our case, followed by afternoon naps.

The food was amazing and because the evening was going so well, we decided to get a room for the night which we retired too. the beds were okay, the room was furnished to a minimum for the money that we spent. it was very dated and very basic for the price, to be awoken on a Sunday morning at 9:40 am by someone with a hammer breaking glass in an adjacent room , it transpired during the evening a window had been broken and maintenance felt the need to change it at this time because it was an ' emergency'. we promptly went to the reception to file a complaint because we thought it was unnecessary and inconsiderate to all the guests who paid to stay at this property, to be woken in such a abrupt and unnecessary fashion, when it could of just been done once everyone had check out. so going back to out complaint at the reception, we tried to make this point and get them to note that incidences such as this needs to be dealt with in an appropriate manner, the reception staff (greg) became very abrupt, rude and arrogant and told us we HAD to leave. I am applauded at the manner in which our complaint was dealt with (disgusting)

The layout in the restaurant is lovely, they have upstairs and downstairs and the majority of tables are booths which are a bit more private. The service we have had has always been good. The food is nice here too considering it is part of a chain. I had the steak last time it was here and it was cooked to perfection. Just a warning - the plate or profiteroles you get for dessert is massive - enough for two to share!
Staff was lovely and nice. We used hubby's points to stay. So I can't complain about the price. The…read moreroom was clean except every time we left; when we came back there was always a smell. Very musty. The first noticeable thing was how dark the room was. At one point we had literally every light on and still found it to be dark and shadowy. The first morning hubby went to make coffee, that's when we learned the coffee maker didn't work. It couldn't hold water. Another night we were phoned that our room service was ready. That's how we learned the phone was not only not working but there was an oily fluid leaking from it. I love the no waste bottles for shampoo, soap lotion, etc. But would be nice if they were all checked ahead of time to make sure they worked (the one for lotion did not- it was fine, but again). Upon checking in we were asked about room service. Would we like daily service. We declined. Being extremely jet lagged we went to bed that evening and then was awoken by pounding at the door. Room services were there to clean. Might have been our misunderstanding but when we declined the service we thought that was enough.

However the staff were not as nice as other premier inns I have stayed in recently, the lady checking me in wasnt bothered in my opinion. The £8.00 breakfast wasnt good and we were the first ones down so it should have been cooked to order really. The pub next door is handy but be warned its rough - Basildon as a whole is a "lively" town and you do need to keep your wits about you. The Pub is called the watermill and consists of a small bar area and a small eating area - i dont recomend either. I was with a couple of local lads so felt OK - I can see some more timid out of towners being intimidated by the edgy atmosphere. There is another Premier Inn in Basildon at the festival lesure park - its much better than this one at East Mayne. If I am stuck then I would stay here again but I know what to expect in the pub.

The ambiance was cozy and tables were pretty spread out. I loved the Tiptree jam that they provided and their scones were the best I've had. There were a couple of menu options, including vegan, and it was pretty filling. Their dessert plate was very interesting and we enjoyed the different chocolate decorations on the pastries. A lovely place to have tea.

(for me it is between 3 and 4 stars because of the high price and more pretending to be than offering great service)
