Excellent transport museum in the city centre of Coventry, focused mainly on automobiles (90%, the rest concerns bicycles and miscellaneous vehicles, including some futuristic ones). Lovers of vintage cars will find hours of enjoyment here, and you'll get to see many brands that you might never have heard of, even if you're from the UK. The vehicles are all in pristine condition, with information boards on each individual model. The exhibit of bicycles from the 19th to the mid 20th century is also impressive, and the presentation impeccable throughout. The entry price of UKP 14 for an adult ticket may seem steep, particularly if you're not a citizen of Coventry, and thus unlikely to return within a given year. But trust me, it's totally worth it, as the Coventry Transport Museum is surely one of the finest attractions in town. read more

The one time I went to visit this museum was on an evening after an interview at Coventry University. Unfortunately the interview finished at the museums closing time so I didnt get to go in. By the looks of it though it is a fabulous museum, I have uploaded a few photos of the outside of the building. The actual builging looks fantastic and the LEDs in the floor are mesmirising. I'd been looking forward to touring this museum as I have several memories of it from my childhood. (And my dad made many of the picture frames that used to hang there, too.) It's in a spanky new building now, so I was expecting great things. It turned out to be a very average (and sometimes shoddy) experience for our group. Granted, we're not motor enthusiasts but neither are we uninterested. There's plenty in the museum to be excited about -- the Thrust 2 and Thrust SSC land speed record breaking cars are here, after all -- and some of the presentations are quite inventive and interesting. But there's a real lack of storytelling in the museum. Much of the artifacts are just "out there", without much context or back-story to support their supposed significance. Also disappointing was the number of non-working displays around the museum. I think we saw four or five blank screens in various parts of the place. In addition, the audio-visual for the Thrust exhibit was pretty much a din underneath the noise of the Thrust ride that backs up to it. The museum is free to enter, and there's a LOT to be said for that. The collection of transportation is really super -- including the open-top double-decker bus that carried Coventry City FC through the city after their 1987 FA Cup win (thank you, Gary Mabbutt's knee!), and many more besides. I just wish they'd curate the collection with a little more care, to draw visitors in to the story of British transportation and, in particular, Coventry's eminent role in that industry. read more

The museum has been there for years but seems now a lot more visible since the redevelopment of the millenium place-this fancy modern square with intersecting arches that you ca see in the intro to the news on television. Access is very good, althoug if you are not familiar with the Coventry ringroad you might find it a bit tight. There is a lot of parking space available on the other side of the road beyond the coach station Pay and display). The entrance to the museum is free. The exhibits are fantastic, you will see there many now models from manufacturers that have long disappeared as well as futuristic designs. My favourites have to be the old Alvis cars (Alvis was a Coventry based car manufacturer, who has heard of them these days?), but my children by far prefered Thrust. Go figure read more

After being redevolped a few years ago, the Museum is a very popular place to visit. First of all it is a very interesting place to go and has some of the greatest transport machines you will see. Its really something that you will remember and a nice free visit so you will be missing out if you dont go. Car from Back to the future is there too. read more

The Coventry Transport Museum is a great place to visit a. if you do not have a large amount of money and like transport related subjects and b if you have children. Its free to get in, and is a really good day out for the kids. I have taken my son and daughter there approx 6 times as is not far from where we live. They have some great exhibitions especially the Thrust exhibition, its a vehicle that broke a land speed record, i think in the late 90'sim not sure but its brilliant for the kids, you sit in the auditorium and there are speakers that tell you the whole story of what happened, and some video footage alsoits very dark and then the thrust car appears on the stage.. its so funny seeing the kids gasp when it happens. The blitz exhibition is great too, although i would warn any people that have small children it can be a little scary, my daughter is three and she cried a bit as it is very dark and you can hear the sirens, she also cried because my little boy who is six tried to comfort het by telling her that grandad had his leg blown off in the blitz!!!!!!! (not actually what happened to my grandads leg.but he likes this version of the storybless him!!!) They have loads more aswell.there is a model collection which if my little boy had his way he would love to play with. They have lots of bikes and motorcycles, incuding penny farthings.. they have buses.old 50's/60's/70's cars that are really cool as it made me and my hubby think back to our grandparents and parents cars. They are open everyday except christmas eve and christmas day and boxing day and new years day. 10-5. They have a really nice gift shop, which sells everything from pencils and nik nacks to some gorgeous model cars and buses. They have a nice cafe with a selection of light snacks and refreshments.... although we tend to take a picnic and go to the park afterwards. Its a great day and in this day in age with the credit crunch, its nice to take the kids out without it costing any money and have some quality time with them while expanding their minds also. Give it a go, its really nice even if you have no kids to be honest, me and my husband enjoy it thoroughly. read more

Brilliant. Firstly, it's free. I have been here approximately 5 times and never get tired of it. I'm a big petrol head, but even if you are not a fan of cars or bikes, you can still enjoy a couple of hours here. Coventry was the centre of the UK transport industry, and the museum showcases some of our finest vehicles dating back over a century. There are films to watch about the land speed record breaking vehicles and a chance to ride in the simulator, which costs £1 per person. Be warned though, this is not suitable for small children, although my 5 year old nephew loved it. There are always other exhibitions on there too, some you have to pay for such as the recent Dr Who exhibition. I am not sure how much these things cost, as I have not been to any of the paid exhibits. My favourite part is the Blitz "set", with sights and smells of the war, and you can wander around Coventry shops and streets as it was a few hundred years ago. There are lots of seasonal events for all the family too. At Halloween there was a spooky Coventry tour for the children and at Christmas there was a Victorian Christmas where you got to meet Santa for free. Much quieter and a nicer venue than seeing him in the shopping centre. They also have a really good gift shop, with an excellent range of retro gifts. Parking is in one of the normal pay and display city car parks. A enjoyable day out for all the family and one I shall continue to visit many more times. read more

This is a wonderful place hidden inside the not so wonderful Coventry town centre. The majestive 'boomerangs' herald the entrance (my son believes that they are from Austrailian giants!) and there is also a funky light thing on the floor outside. Give yourself plenty of time to look around and go back to your childhood with the Back to the future car, police cars from your youth and many many more. There are plenty of interactive sections too and many an hour can be spent here for free! The gift shop is the usual trap but there are some funky items well worth a visit with or without kids read more

Coventry Transport museum is a great place to go. This is great for all ages. There are lots of car history as Coventry is known for his motor history but there are also many interesting bits and old picures of Coventry itself which is facinating. It's amazing to see how things have changed and why. This is a great place to take visitors not from Coventry and also a must for any Cov locals who have never been. read more

Barry Littlewood has worked a miracle here, as the Coventry Transport Museum is a truly great place to visit. The place is spotless and there is a great wealth of exhibits on show, everything from jaguar design exercises to the Lotus Sunbeam of Henri Toivonen and some wonderful old Alvis motor cars from back in the day. I took my girls here back in 2006 and we loved it - it was a great afternoon, and FREE of course, which was just mega. The area around the museum is not the greatest (no offence Coventry) and secure parking is advised being honest, but do go and visit the museum. It is a great example of just how right we can get it when the right vision pulls some A1 ingredients together - and it's not just for car people! read more

Ever since I can remember I've been visiting the Coventry Transport Museum. It still interests me as much as it did when I was younger. A family place to enjoy together as all ages have something to entertain them. Other than looking at the fascinating cars through the ages, there are play points for younger children, and even a play area for those a little older. There's a simulator that I still enjoy at 20! A small shop is in the museum, so a gift or reminder of your trip completes the day perfectly. It is worth a visit, or even two or three. And as it's free you can enjoy it again and again without worrying about your pocket. A cheap and easy way to keep everyone entertained and happy. read more

The transport museum has been around since i was born and probably before! I always went here at weekends and when on school holidays with my dad. Back 10-15 years ago you had to pay to get in, and we used to own passes that lasted yearly. Now days it is completely free to go into which is a nice change. Talking of change the biggest changes the motor museum has had is having the building front and interior renivated. It now has a modern design allowing it stand and be seen. The museum houses many old vintage cars, bikes and cycles. All of which are in immacualte condition. There are many little areas here such as a war zone bring the blitz alive again. The museum also house both Thrust 2 And Thrust SSC, the two land speed record holders. Which were both designed in coventry. This is a must day out in Coventry. Great to see cars etc and the history of Coventry where some of the vehicles were built! read more

Been here three times now within the last 10 years. Would go more often, however I'm from Australia. With this said, everytime I have been here, there has always been something new to look at, see and do. Best of all, its free to enter and to this day, cannot work out why they don't charge anyone to come and see the amazing vehicles within. Some interesting blitz stuff to look at in here also, and stories from the time that was when Coventry was under attack. Pleasant experience everytime and look forward to the next visit in a few years. read more

The free Coventry Transport Museum has a very cool collection of cars, commercial vehicles, motor and bicycles. It also has some good information on Coventry's role in the war effort, and the dangers it faced because of that role. The special exhibition when we visited was of vehicles used by British surfers, 1950s to the present, kinda kitschy but interesting. One of the most memorable sections there is the Spirit of Speed Gallery, featuring Thrust2 and ThrustSSC, the two fastest cars on Earth. The current record stands at 763 miles per hour! read more

Truely excellant museum , covering the evolution of motor manufacture in the UK . Theres a few obvious exceptions from the exhibits but if they were there you would need a Tardis . It is obviously Coventry focused but frankly you will enjoy the place and as its free its very very good value . read more

Having worked with kids for many years I have visited this place so many times! Its really worth a visit with your kids and it rely's on donations so it doesnt cost you a thing to get in. Your younger child may get bored though as they are not allowed to touch, try telling a 3 year old not to climb in that car as they go past! There are so many different types of transport from the penny black to the sky blues 1987 FA Cup bus, it good for the kids to see how different transport was to the luxury they now have. They also have video's playing showing the evolution of transport in little booths for you to sit and watch. There is a blitz part which can be a bit frightening for younger children as it is dark and played the air raid siren. There is a place for your child to draw and a special education centre (I've not been in). Are you up for the the experience of a supersonic run in the ThrustSSC Land Speed Record Simulator? They also have a small gift shop, which sell cars, books, posters and other small souvenir items. read more

This is such a cool place for anybody. From the very young to the very old it has something for everybody. We went earlier this year and enjoyed it so much, taking the kids on a rainy Sunday afternoon and they loved it. They have many sections with something to interest everybody from the vintage cars when you first walk in then onto the buses and trucks including the Sky Blues celebration bus when they won they 1987 FA Cup. There are just so many cars, trucks, buses, milkfloats, motorbikes and pushbikes plus so much more. If you'd like to see one of the bikes from Ewan and Charlies Long Way Round, or maybe the Italian Job display (the tunnel scene was filmed just down the road in the Coventry to Birmingham sewer), they have a wartime section, and the car from Austin powers-The Spy Who S***d Me. Maybe you'd like to see a replica car of the Dolorean from Back To The Future or the baddie car from a Bond film There is little cafe halfway round so you can chill out with a cuppa and get the kids a chocolate bar. This a wonderful place for an stroll around, it's so big that you could spend hours taking it all in and another thingit's FREE!!! Check it out, please. read more

I've been here so many times over the years and still enjoy it as much as I did when I was young. The new museum is better and more interactive for school children. I would recommend a visit here to anyone and have taken my nephew myself a few times. The staff are friendly and helpful, the place is exciting for children and adults alike. The information on the cars and the history are interesting. Definitely worth a visit. read more

The first thing you need to know about Coventry is that it used to be the centre of the British Transport Industry, with many of the largest and best-known British cycle and automotive companies calling Coventry home, as well as being the British base of many international car manufacturers and the birthplace of Frank Whittle, inventor of the jet engine. These days the factories are thin on the ground, but the heritage lives on in the Transport Museum, which is not only excellent, but also boasts free entry. The museum boasts a large number of permanent and temporary exhibitions, some firmly based around the vehicles themselves, others, like the excellent Blitz exhibition, weaving in a little local and national history. The museum also has large displays and archives of transport-related signs, advertising material, tickets and other ephemera, which are enjoyable to look at even if you're not that keen on the exhibits themselves. There is also an excellent create your own dream car exhibit which the kids love. It's not all about transport either: in early 2009 a Dr Who exhibit is due to open, with The Tardis, costumes and monsters from the television series, as well as some real life - well, kinda - Daleks. I cannot wait! Weekends tend to be quieter than weekdays because of school visits, but the museum tends towards 'bustling' rather than 'busy' even on these days, a miracle considering the quality of exhibits and the free entry. read more

A great place for the whole family, and a real Cov Kid institution. An unrivalled collection, although the really old pre-war stuff is not really of great interest to me, the more modern vehicles showcasing the once huge local car manufacturing industry are well worth spending some time on. Thrust exhibits are something unique which you won't find elsewhere. Perhaps could do with some more high tech, interactive displays to hold younger children's interest. read more

It's great to see that this place is still open and that it is still free, it's one of the cornerstone of Coventry city centre and it would be a shame if it was ever to go. I have visited the transport museum on several occasions. It is filled to the brim with cars, bikes and other forms of transport - any mans dream. It is easy to navigate your way round and there is many interactive activities you can enjoy. The blitz exhibition was one of my highlights as it's informing and interesting. There is also a cafe which sells your typical cuisine - sandwiches, beverages and other treats. There is also a gift shop selling your average souvenirs. There a lots of things for the kids. They have pretty much got the entire history of cars including the first - the Daimler. They also have penny farthings and every other types of bikes. Another highlight is the exhibition of famous cars from films and TV programmes. There's the car from Back to the Future and Starsky & Hutch. I would reccomend the Coventry Transport Museum for anyone and everyone but also as a family day out. read more
