One lane tunnel with no lights so proceed with caution. Takes about 45 seconds to drive from one end to the other. There are interpretative signs that give the details of the battle. The Battle of Middle Creek was an engagement fought January 10, 1862, in Eastern Kentucky during the American Civil War. The battle, along with the Battle of Mill Springs, positioned the Union armies to invade Middle Tennessee. There are also small paths that you can take and walk out onto the field.

Each corner and wall is packed with artifacts and memorabilia, and the museum curators are eager to explain each piece. There are features connecting to Native Americans, Berea College, and the history of the Red River Gorge Caves. This museum is vital to enjoying your time in the area, a private tour is needed!

It was designed for Senator John Pope of Kentucky. We toured this property by making an appointment with the Bluegrass Trust. They were great about working with us so we could see this unique piece of history. The home changed hands through the years until it eventually got cut up into multiple apartments for student housing. It eventually experienced a fire, which led to the Bluegrass Trust being able to purchase it. This is a way to see preservation and restoration in action. The trust has very slowly and painfully, over time, first worked to ensure the property was safe and at least stable. And now they are slowly working to restore it a little bit at a time. This is truly a labor of love, with members of the trust taking turns mowing the lawn, cleaning up plaster, doing small projects. And budgets are tight, so every contribution helps. Tours are a steal at 10 dollars, so pay more if you can. Great way to learn about history, architecture, previous lifestyles, restoration. Gorgeous photo ops. If you Google "Latrobe's Pope Villa Lexington" the website will come up and show you the info on how to arrange a tour.

Enjoyed the blacksmith demonstration, and the numerous artifacts and posters combine to form an intimate narrative of the place. The fort itself seems a little run down, and a few of the employees seemed standoffish and irritable on the day that we visited, especially the woman in the first cabin with a person. I didn't really understand why she seemed so agitated at another person near us asking a very simple question. Bizarre. We got the heck out there. The monument in front of the fort easily had a hundred bees buzzing around it, so beware if you have bee sting allergies.

We stopped at the Fort when we saw a sign on our way to Corbin, KY. We hadn't heard of it before…read moreand we had some extra time so we figured we'd give it a shot. We were definitely pleased with the accuracy of the fort replica and the knowledge of the staff. We learned about how they made wood tools, how they spun linen into thread and how to use a loom. They had some more exhibits that were unmanned at the time like making soap and a traditional garden. They also had a gift shop but I wasn't all that impressed and thusly did not purchase anything. The grounds were very nice and very well maintained. The fort was peaceful and not crowded at all, the only downside was that the kids were horribly bored. I can't really blame the museum too much for this....it WAS near the end of a long hot day, but the place really isn't geared towards younger kids. So it's up to you if you think your kids would enjoy long in depth detailed and historically accurate descriptions of the tasks I listed earlier.....is so then you will be pleased. In our case the kids were not, but that didn't stop us from having a great time, 4 Doubledays for you....and nice work!
