Leeds might have a reputation for ugliness and inspire images of hulking great tower blocks, but though you would be quite justified in thinking so of the outskirts, don't let it put you off the city centre. The centre of Leeds is full of historic buildings and most notable are the exquisite Victorian arcades in the Victoria Quarter which house a whole range of exciting (and expensive) shops for those who wanted to shop in the dry before shopping centres were invented.
