I recently saw a review on google from a lady named Andrea Andrajack who wrote about her puppy having a craniomandibular genetic defect. Our cairn that we bought in April of 2019 had the same issue. I wrote and emailed Countryside Kennels and sent them a copy of our vet report - asking them to cover the cost of our vet bills (we had already fallen in love with our pup) and demanding that they stop breeding from the dog that carries the defect. I heard nothing back after many calls. Finn (our pup) almost died from starvation because he couldn't eat and was in so much pain - until our vet figured out what was wrong with him. It was a terrible time for all of us. If you haven't visited the kennel I urge you to stop by. It is dirty and disgusting and they won't let you see where the pups live. We had to wash our dog 4-5 times to get the kennel smell out. I have copies of the letter I sent and the vet records. Please post here if you have had the same issues. read more

My sisters and I were disappointed when she received a 2 year old Cavachon. He needed grooming and a bath. He wasn't house broken, and did not appear to have socialization with other dogs or humans. He constantly had diarrhea. At this point the vet bill are high, medications for diarrhea varied. According to the veterinarian, his intestines did not properly develop. I purchased a springer from these people that was 2 years old. We were told that this girl was well socialized and trained. She was not and is still a work in progress a year later. That is the least of our worries, Mitsy is now having epileptic seizures . She has been diagnosed at Cornell University. We contacted Countryside Kennels and have not and don't expect that we will ever get a response from them. These people are irresponsible breeders and you should beware if you are considering buying a dog from them. read more

Horrible, horrible, horrible people to do business with! My husband and I were in the process of adopting a Lhasa Apso and these breeders let the adoption process fall right apart before everything was set to go through! We had to agreed to get all the paperwork in place for the 10th of May but my grandmom passed away right in that time period and unfortunately, I had to fly out of town for her funeral. I got back in on the 14th and followed up on the process and they refused to budge on the date for the paperwork (I requested for the 15th but they still wanted to keep it as the 10th.) I caved in and agreed to their date but after all of that back & forth, they decided to not go ahead with the adoption anymore because methinks they had higher offers and couldn't wait to get that dog out of their shelter. For those of you who are wondering why the date is so relevant in this case, it's because even though the dog would be mine by the said date on the paperwork, he wouldn't be shipped to us until the end of July because of our already existing travel plans to Europe. This means that we'd be paying for his boarding costs for the period of time that they would hold him for (an extra $2 a day.) Of course, it wasn't a matter of an extra $10 for us (when they were slapping outrageous shipping, neutering and other costs for the dog) but these folks made it seem so! I reassured that them that this was not the case and I was willing to do it as per their dates but AFTER ALL OF THAT FUSS, they came back to tell me that they don't want the dog to be in their care for so long ... even though this was their idea in the first place!! And to top it off, they were SO DAMN RUDE about the whole process - especially given what I had gone through in the past couple of days and given that they are grandparents themselves. The circumstances weren't perfect but their attitude was so hostile that it made me doubt whether there was something wrong with the puppy ... of course, I haven't met the puppy and was taking a leap of faith by taking their word on his health, temperament, mannerisms, etc. and having him shipped all the way to Seattle. They don't do any background checks on the buyer which in hindsight has made me realize that they only care about their bottom line and don't care what happens to the puppy once adopted. In fact, throughout the process, I was the only one asking questions and requesting for information - not once did they care to ask about me and what I do for a living. I wouldn't trust them one bit. It's better to find a breeder who actually respects your time and wants to make their clients happy - not just do a crooked and dishonest transaction for "a living, breathing thing" (quoting their words) read more

I received my Cairn Terrier two months ago. DOB 5/23/19 He came to me via a Pet Chauffeur right to my door step... extremely convenient and the male who drove him was very presentable and nice. However, my pup had very dry itchy skin, some ticks, and also some ear mites. I have since fed him "Diamond natural" formula for skin and coat. The ear mites cleared up within a week.. He has improved greatly being in my care. My pup came to me with the name Neal but I have re-named him "Shiloh". Shiloh is my everything and he has turned out to be an amazing cairn terrier. He is absolutely so very handsome and well behaved. He has flown on a plane with me with great success. I have never had a problem with aggression, he loves other dogs and never ever tried to fight or even hardly barks. I have a five year old son and they have become the best of friends. He's a great companion and he also serves as my ESA.He has been approved in just two months because he is completely trained. I got my English Springer Spaniel 23 years ago from a pet store out here in Massachusetts, but he was originally from the breeders at Countryside Kennels in South Dakota (they no longer sell their dogs to pet stores, haven't in a VERY long time), which is why his name was Dakota. He passed away thirteen years ago, but up until he got sick at age ten (his illness had nothing to do with his genetics, just for clarification) he was the healthiest dog ever. NEVER got sick, and also was the best dog a young girl could have. We got Dakota when I was 4, and I had him until high school, and I still cry just thinking about him, because he was the best dog ever. I currently have another dog that we got from a different breeder, mostly because we didn't want another springer that we might accidentally compare to our perfect Dakota, but now I'm thinking when my current pup passes away and I'm ready for another dog, I want to travel out to SD to get a dog from Countryside Kennels again. Thats how amazing our Dakota was. So if you want a companion, a great family dog that is eager to please, easy to train, and maybe like Dakota is the type of dog that even people who DON'T like dogs just LOVE, I HIGHLY recommend Countryside Kennels. read more

The owners of Countryside were very easy to talk to many times over the course of my dealing with them, sent me a great deal of information and photos of the puppies and parents of pups I was interested in having, They were very careful about the documentation accompanying the pup, and very reasonable about all of the fees for vaccinations and shipping. In all communication, they seemed to care a great deal about my pup and their dogs. It is very important that I know this kennel is a reputable breeder and NOT a puppy mill. They flew our pup to us with all proper docs and of course, the exact day and flight agreed upon. Upon arrival at the kennel, we knew we shouldn't buy a dog from them. The conditions of the part we were "allowed" to see was filthy and the stench was overwhelming. We were shown the 2 dogs we requested to see, a 9 month and a 18 month old. Both dogs were scared and their leg feathers and feet were stained with urine. We also requested to see 2 puppies, who were also fearful and only wanted to hide. There were 3 or 4 air kennels in the office with older dogs in them, without bedding. The floor of the office was sticky from urine. The older dog did eventually start coming up to me. She kept looking at me with eyes that said "save me" and we picked her. They had her labeled as Renee, but she is now Rainy. We took her to our vet of 20 years and found that Rainy was underweight by about 8-10 lbs, had worms, and terrible ear mites, which were all things that could be fixed by treatments and adequate amount of food. Getting Rainy cleaned up was another issue, tried numerous products, but none really ever really got rid of the urine stained fur, so feathers and paws had to be trimmed. However, the real challenge and what cannot be easily fixed is how scared of everything she is, including most people and definitely children. Talking with our vet and several professional trainers they all said she wasn't properly socialized as a puppy, even though Dorothy and Gary assured us ALL the dogs were used to their own grandchildren. I also wonder if she had been mistreated/abused as well. We've had her for about 3 months now and we are making some progress with socializing, but it's definitely baby steps and sometimes it feels like we go backwards. Hopefully we get to the point where anyone can see how sweet she really is, instead of just how skittish and scared she is. I would definitely not recommend this place to anyone. My husband and I just got a beautiful black and white female Springer Spaniel 7 month old dog, Ruby Begonia from Countryside Kennels. Our daughter had previously bought a lovely liver and white female a few years ago, and has been nothing but so very happy with her dog, Dixie Leigh. So we already knew about Countryside Kennels and they knew about us, which helped in the process, but Dorothy and Gary listened to every thing we wanted and supplied us with lots of wonderful choices. They sent us photos of their Springers, both standing and playing, videos, details about the dogs personalities, photos of parents and how the shipping process would work. The Sandborns are perfectionists not only about raising top quality dogs, but are meticulous about the shipping of their pups, both in comfort and protection for the dogs, but in completing ALL of the health documents, shipping instructions and dialogue with the new owners and the shipping airline, too. Ruby Begonia has already raced past our expectations, not only in looks, but intelligence, willingness to please and join in our family, including our 10-1/2 year old Springer Spaniel we already have. And WHAT a hunting nose she has!!! I recently spoke with Dorothy to tell her how wonderful Ruby is and how very, very happy we are with the whole transaction. She was so sweet in wanting to know all of the funny stories, we sent her photos and will continue to do so. She and Gary have been breeding fine dogs for 34 years, and care deeply about the long term prospects of all of their pups. That is why one nasty, negative review from a previous attempt-to-buy person is so inaccurate and unfair. I can only be deeply relieved that such an angry person does NOT have a breathing, living dog from the Sandborns! Our Daisy Mae is 7 months old this week. Gary and Dorthy provided valuable information that helped me select my Daisy Mae. Daisy is a very gentle, smart, beautify, loving dog. I could not ask for a better dog, as she has been all that Gary and Dorthy promised. Gary met me on his way through Indiana to deliver Daisy, and went out of his way to make sure the transaction went well. Out of all the breeders I spoke with Countryside Kennels were the most helpful, along with honest about their puppies and background. Daisy gets lots of comments on how beautiful she is. Her response is lots of kisses! Gary and Dorthy continue to ask for pictures and updates on Daisy. Please get a dog from Countryside Kennels because these dogs need a home and you can get them away from this place. We purchased a retired breeder (Hot Coffee) Lhasa Apso male from Dorothy and Gary in January of 2016 when he was 3 years old and were told that he was a well adjusted, personable dog on a regular potty schedule that had grown too tall for breeding purposes. We traveled from Iowa to pick up Coffee in South Dakota and we were aghast at the condition of this dog. My wife nearly broke down in tears when she saw Coffee and his condition. Skin and bones, and shaved everywhere but his face and tail. It was clear he had been shaved to hide the condition his coat had been in. Even Gary was surprised at the "haircut" Dorothy had subjected this dog to. When Coffee was introduced to us we tried to connect with him in the Countryside office. Coffee laid sprawled in the middle of the floor without personality and without movement, when Dorothy left the room to find another dog to stimulate Coffee's "animation" my wife turned to me in tears and said I don't want this dog, but I can't leave him here!" We decided at that point to take Coffee from Countryside Kennels and never look back. Coffee ceased to exist that day and our Kona was born. I will tell you that the past two years with Kona have been the most challenging and rewarding years of our life as dog owners. Coffee was in no way a pet, he was an animal who had spent the majority of his three year life in a cage. We had to teach Kona how to be a dog first, and how to be our pet next. To that end Kona has been lucky to work with our other Lhasa "Max", with an excellent and patient dog trainer, and with my wife Jamey. Two years later Kona still has accidents, he is still afraid of people and strange sounds, and he still spins in circles when he is nervous (a product of his endless days, weeks, and months in a cage), but he has also made remarkable progress. Kona is a sweetheart that loves to cuddle, to throw a tennis ball around, and to receive biscuits and praise. He has been worth the work, but the conditions he came from are deplorable. It sickens me that Countryside Kennels exist,so please rescue a dog from them as soon as you have the ability to do so! read more

First off, all of these people giving "great" reviews for countryside kennels are NOT local SD people. They are having these dogs shipped from SD. They do not see the conditions these dogs come from at Countryside! Dorothy and Gary have time to bathe,groom and make the dog look nice upon arrival at the airport. I traveled to Madison SD to visit this breeder with my sister. The stench upon opening the car doors at this farm was horrendous! Dog waste and more. The dogs we came to look at were too frightened to come hear us. So timid and scared. Meanwhile this place has 2 outbuildings and a huge barn. Howling,crying and barking coming from all. I wandered maybe 10 ft away and Dorothy was yelling at me to come back, that she doesn't want people all over the place. I was just following the dog who we were there to see whom was too scared to come near anyone. In the back of this building was a smell of decay. Rotten. I was then thinking this was for sure a puppy mill. Dorothy is maybe 70, Gary(about the same age)has had recent back surgery and barely able to walk more or less help with these dogs. There had to have been hundreds in those buildings. I asked to see the parents of the dog my sister wanted. Dorothy interrupted me and said this dog is 1 1/2 yrs old and would only get as big as he is now. I tried to say "to see the height/weight and the parents demeaner" but she was NOT going to let that happen. I did some Googling and discovered this breeder is on the 100 horrible breeders in SD list. I showed this to my sister and she felt bad and still wanted to take the dog home. Great, I'm glad this one has escaped the cruelty of this breeder. Her dog is too scared to walk, drank a half gallon of water at home and still hadn't peed 2 hours later. Dehydrated for sure. So timid and scared. He has fleas. His natural body shape is that of one who has been smashed into a very small cage or kennel. He is shaped like a square. His ears were so full of brown gunk that my sister thought there was a leach in there! The water bucket on Countryside kennel office steps was empty. There was a mother in the office with 2 young pups. You could see her spine, WAY to skinny to be nursing. We were given toys that the dogs supposedly loved to play with.One was a brand new bright orange throw toy for hunting dogs. They didn't know wth it was. When swinging or tossing them multiple dogs reared back so much it was as if we had hit them in the face with a shovel! Finally while signing paperwork my sister was told that she would get the AKC papers AFTER the dog was neutered and proof was mailed in. For one that proof of AKC should have been shown BEFORE the dog was paid for. Or the parents' AKC records. Nope pretty sure this dog is not AKC. After seeing this place I think these dogs are imbred, in horrible living conditions and are dying of malnutrition and diseases. I think they are thrown in the back fields or still in the cages dead. I think they are have such little human interaction that they are scared, timid and don't know wth to think when out to be "shown". They do not receive love. Or petting. Or basic necessities to live. Dorothy told us to pet under the chin only so they can be proud and dominate. Any family dog needs to know they are bottom of the barrel in authority. Frankly these dogs didn't like to be pet on the head bc they are scared. Flinch at any movements towards them. There is a reason. A terrible horrible money hungry reason and these dogs need to all be rescued from these people! read more

I picked out what I thought was a beautiful Lhasa puppy. I had spoken to Doherty the owner about my horrible journey with my former dog Duncan, a Lhasa who was ill his entire life. I was heartbroken when I had to put him to sleep at 9 years old. So choosing a new companion I decided to honor Duncan and get another Lhasa. Ivan is a cutie and I love him for being him. But he is not a Lhasa. He is 23 lbs and very long body. My vet now told me Ivan is a Lhasalier. This is a mix of Lhasa and King Charles. I have e-mailed Countryside Kennels to no avail. I do not regret getting Ivan, he has brought joy to my life. He is wonderful in every way. Just to warn anyone if you are looking for a Lhasa Apso do not buy here. I got my gorgeous baby girl from these breeders almost 4 yrs ago. They couldnt have been nicer or more helpful. She is 4 yrs old now and my husband and I are obsessed with our baby. They sent her with all her papers and micro chip and the men at the airport told us that this breeder is one of the best they have seen as all their puppies are shipped safe and all papers are in tact. I HIGHLY recommend this breeder. The previous post is nothing but a disgruntled buyer who lost out on a beautiful puppy. You cant be irresponsible when buying a puppy and these breeders are VERY careful in who they allow to buy the puppies. They interviewed me by phone and i had tofill out all paperwork about my home and personal life. This person flaked and disappeared. If she had a death in her family - the last thing on her mind would be getting a puppy. especially if it were one of her parents. She could have emailed them to let them know her tragedy but she obviously just disappeared. Her review is unwarranted. TRUST THIS BREEDER. I got the LOVE OF MY LIFE from them.
