The oldest kid in this summer camp was no more than 10 years old. Some looked as young as 5. None of the music was the "clean version". Almost every single song mentioned sex. It took everything in me to not walk over there to see what the hell was going on. I had to post something about it, because I would NEVER let my kids step foot in something like that.

I so love McCabe Park Community Center!…read more They offer a full gym with basketball courts, a running track, cardio machines, weight rooms, and the option to rent the facility. I love that it's modern and new and the staff is always friendly. They offer memberships and a 10 pass package for very reasonable prices, but what's amazing is that if you want to stop in for a one time visit to take a class or use the facility, it's only $3!!!! I have been to fancy gyms that charge $20 if you don't have a membership. Ridiculous. The classes are also great, I love the boot camp they offer and it will totally kick your butt! It's not for the faint of heart. My only complaint; I wish they were open on Sundays! But overall a lovely facility that I am so pleased to have in my neighborhood!

3.5 This is a hard…read morepark to review. Please don't allow the star rating to deter you from coming here, if you have reason to do so. I think my issue lies in the difference between my reasons for going to parks and the reason why Una Park exists... if such a thing makes sense. You don't come here by accident. By both location and function, there are only specific reasons to venture here. I have no idea what neighborhood this is. I want to say the park is outside of Nashville proper, belonging to the borg of greater Davidson County. I suppose that, in time, realtors will give it a snazzy name but for now, I'm lost if there is one. It's off Murfreesboro Pike past the airport heading towards Bell Road. Does that help? In any event, once you cross over Old M-boro Road and drive deeper into a residential area, you'll find it. This is a newer construction and obvious use of taxpayer funds. This was county land that locals, I assume, used to hike and/or ignore to their heart's content. Now, Una Park is a very impressive athletic destination. Large hills give way to sweeping sky views and multiple fields for all sorts of sporting interests. I noted 2-3 large baseball fields, a football field, a soccer field (that could be used for football), decent parking facilities (though not enough for all the different fields), concession stands, a pavilion, a small (new) playground, and a skate park. With the abundance of flood lights and team banners, Una Park is, obviously, ground zero for local sports teams and once spring hits, I'm sure it will be packed with families cheering on their young athletes. So, if you fall into this specific demo, Una Park is a 5-star park without a doubt. For the rest of us, however, Una Park isn't quite as welcoming. I like to come to parks to engage with green spaces, look at mature trees and flowers and get lost in my thoughts for a bit. Una Park doesn't offer much of any of this. This is a park of (local) utility rather than design. This isn't a 'park' in the sense of Radnor or Shelby. You don't come here to get away from city madness or take pictures. You come here to root on your athlete-scholar. That's fine and well but it's a bit too specific for my needs/interests at this time. If this is your bag, however, I'm sure you;ll love it. For what it is, it's very well done.

The park itself was softly established in the 1960s, without much fanfare. Itself not far from the city of Murfreesboro, the park was home to sporting events between Nashville and Murfreesboro in the 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's. Metro Nashville pumped some money into the park in 2007, re-establishing the park at the time. It currently has a playground, baseball field, football field, and skate park over 24 acres. It has paved pathways between and around the various fields, and it took us about half an hour to walk about .8mile around the park.

Alonzo and James Carroll Napier were born Nashville, to a freedman and blacksmith. The school…read moreadjacent to the park is named for Alonzo, and the park is named for James Carrol. J. C. Napier attended Wilberforce College, Oberlin College, and Howard University. He worked as an attorney, and a banker, before getting enveloped in civil service. He served on the Nashville City Council, was in charge of the Centennial exhibits on black achievements, and served as a US register of the Treasury under President Taft. He began to push hard for local playgrounds for the local black community. This land was purchased by the Nashville Parks Board in 1913 for $1,500, and dedicated in J. C. Napier's name. Today the park sits with 2.13 acres, and has a playground, a swimming pool, and a community center. The park has hosted a lot in its time, from day camps, to tennis competitions, to basketball competitions, to concerts and plays, and even scouts. There's a beautiful mural here as well. The neighborhood is a poorer one, and it's concerning to see the bars on the windows of the homes surrounding the park. There's also no where to really park. But, it's worth it to see this gem of a park. It's one of the oldest in the city, and has a charm to it.

3.5 I'm rounding up…read morebecause there's a pool but a 3.5 rating is accurate. This is a neighborhood park to be sure. It, like many parks in the metro area, is connected to a(n elementary) school so unless you have little ones or are planning on spending your time in the attached community center (more on that), I would only come here during the weekend. Otherwise, you run the very real risk of looking like a creeper. The park itself is small. There's a metro sign, brick lettering and a small (like, suitable for an elementary school game of kickball -- not one played by adults) field and that's about it for the green space. The playground is a part of the school. While I'm sure (at least, I hope) it's accessible to the neighborhood kids, it's not part of the park proper. Another not so great aspect of the park is is the proximity to the street. If said elementary school kids were playing kickball and the ball got past the outfielder, you have kids running into traffic. There's no fence or anything else to block the kids off from cars. As a park, the green space doesn't make a lot of sense -- especially when it should be serving the needs of the community/neighborhood. The community center is a different story. There's plenty of parking, ample air conditioning, many rooms, and the above-mentioned pool. These are all pluses and make me consider the viability of the park apart from the community center. I think they should be reviewed together, so I am sticking with the 3.5/4 rating but, again, this is closer to 3.5. Yes, the park is across the street from the Napier Homes but I didn't feel any sort of way during the day on a Saturday. I'm sure it's different at night but there's not many parks you should be at at night. #facts As Nashville grows and the cash/land grab extends its all-consuming paws this way, I am sure Napier Park will change. That will be a very good/bad/sad thing... and it's coming. It's definitely coming.
