I had a very good experience at Cottonwood Springs during my 14 day stay, I got alot out of the Recovery Groups the facility offered and it's a very stress free stay where a team of doctors helps you get back on your feet & start to focus on a productive future upon your discharge. As a disabled, transgender man, this place is the last place I'd recommend to anyone from ANY walks of life, even if you aren't any sort of minority like I am. During my visit from 08/08 to 08/12, the following happened: 1. Upon being admitted for a drug induced psychosis, they put my on their "volatile" unit (Sunshine) and, against my gender identity and request, roomed me with a woman. When I approached staff about it, the first member told me to essentially "suck it up", and it took me seeking out two other members for them to find a solution. Said solution was putting me in isolation. 2. After rooming in the isolation room, I was waken up by staff members loudly talking about how transgender people were essentially not people as well, one member stating "...I just don't support their lifestyle" within earshot of me. 3. The staff violated multiple federal AND state patient rights; they didn't orally tell me my rights, they didn't give me proper accommodation, and they treated me and other patients like animals. 4. Thanks to the nature of the beds, a spinal injury I was almost fully recovered from was agitated, and during my stay, I went from being fully mobile to once again having to use a wheelchair almost full time. 5. Whenever I was transferring MYSELF from my wheelchair to the bed, I fell onto the floor and was stared at by the entire nursing staff. It took me calling out to them for them to finally start making their way to me, and one female member made a point to put gloves on and handle me as if I was trash. 6. They filled their patients past capacity, and one woman was put into isolation whenever I was moved out into a room (once again, with a woman, against my wishes and everyone else's comfort) and the other was sleeping on one of their restraint impact cushion on the common room's floor. She had to ask staff to shower multiple times because she didn't have a room, and her request was ignored several times in a row until a male nursing staff (who made my stay survivable) gathered her things and called over a female staff member to watch her. 7. It took me getting loud and leaving my room at 12am for staff members to stop loudly talking and essentially screaming at some moments to respect other people's sleep during the night. One particular member named Daisy set off my agitation by mumbling "well morning staff does it too" under her breath, and then proceeded to talk about me, a PATIENT, behind my back during the rest of my stay to other staff members. 8. Despite my drug induced psychosis episode clearing up on the 9th, they refused to discharge me; it took me begging a staff member named Amina (who was also wonderful, by the way) to help me with filing to leave for AMA for me to finally be listened to, even though it's stated in the patient right's papers (that they printed off and handed me myself) that patients who are no longer in need of treatment are not to be held in the facility. I was not suicidal, homicidal, nor even a danger to ANYONE, including myself, yet they held me even after multiple doctors/therapists I talked with 1-on-1 said so themselves that they didn't know why I was there. 9. I was able to leave in the early hours of the evening on the 12th, and even though the same male staff member previously mentioned had to wheel me out in a wheelchair, they marked me as being ambulatory on their discharge paperwork. Ambulatory, even though I fell TWICE during my stay. TLDR; don't go here or send anyone you love here if you don't want to have to fight for you/them to get the help you actually need. read more

They tried to trap me during the assessment process with no warning. I thought it would be a safe place to express my thoughts and feelings to see what kind of programs they offer and help but instead they tricked me and locked up my phone and belongings and took me into a hallway room and i decided i didn't want to do the assessment and i quickly found out that i was locked in the hallway with no way out. I was starting to panic and nobody could help be because they were understaffed and made me wait for 3 hours wondering if i was ever going to leave. Any staff in the hallway I begged to let me go and they said they couldn't. The facility was cold and uncomforting, I was terrified. I knocked on the door to another room to talk to someone to try to distract from my fear. Poor guy in that room was just as scared as I was, he was visibly shaking. He didn't know he'd get trapped in there too. I hugged him, held on and told him it would be alright and that we'd get through this. I don't think he was as lucky as I was to leave. I think he got stuck with the 72 hour hold. I finally got a screen out after three hours of total fear, I'm sure if i would have given them other answers i would have gotten locked in there. This is absolutely unacceptable. I read this is protocol for psych wards but I didn't know that coming in and I think it is wrong. You should never be trapped anywhere against your will unless you've tried to hurt somebody. I can't believe I escaped this nightmare. This is the kind of thing that keeps people who need help from seeking it. read more

I can't believe that this place is in business. The doctors don't care about you, neither do the nurses. The intake people will lie to you. Once you're there, you can't leave until a doctor decides to let you go, usually after three days. People scream 24/7, the therapists are terrible, and the nurse staff will talk bad about the patients. The people who are in need of major mental health care will NOT receive it here. It is more like prison than a hospital. read more

Had a great experience with the outpatient services at Cottonwood. I adored all of the therapists, especially Isabel. Through my 3 weeks of my treatment, I have gained the proper coping mechanisms to live life without overwhelming fear of judgement, rejection, and failure. Would recommend!!! read more

During my evaluation I asked if I could talk to a doctor, apparently they didnt have one while I was there! The staff was not welcoming at all and you feel like inventory instead of someone in need. a person very close to me went here recently for detox, inpatient rehab, outpatient rehab and half day outpatient rehab. He was thoroughly impressed with the psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of addiction. His only negative remark was that he wished that he could continue using him for his outpatient care. their program instilled values and systems to conquer this horrible disease. he is feeling better physically and emotionally than he has on many years. the therapists there were also very good and he got used to attending groups which is important to his recovery. cottonwood helped instil this in him. I have been to Cottonwood a number of times in the last 4 years, and things have gone down hill in a number of ways that I will outline below. You used to be able to knock on Doctor Willie's office door and he invites you in and share his experience, strength, and hope every week day you were there, and you just do not get to do this anymore. He now has black construction paper taped over the window on the door so you don't know if he is in there or not. I got there early Tuesday morning, and between then and the end of the week I met with him 1 time. He was apparently taking the whole next week off, so I would not see him again before I discharged. I don't know how many other patients knew he was going to be gone, but I definitely did not. There was no goodbye of any sorts. 1 patients I talked to said Dr Willie himself informed him of this absence, but multiple PCAs told me none of them knew he was going to be away. I have a hard time believing that a patient knew he was going to be gone but the staff did not. I view this as basically the highest level of disrespect that can be shown to a patient. With Doctor Willie being gone, Patrick was supposed to send a prescription to my pharmacy, and he screwed the whole thing up in every way possible. I have been waiting for this to be resolved since Thursday, and I'm starting to accept that nobody is going to fix anything and that I am shit out of luck. Cottonwood food used to be great. The meals served were really good, and all 3 units were stocked with good snacks. People check in there who have been living off 1000 calories, a liter of vodka, and a bag of meth a day for months if not years, and these people need to be able to go get a decent snack 24/7. You used to be able to go get a pint of milk, a PB&J, and ice cream any time. The new Cottonwood, I bet they're food budget has been cut by 60% or more. The meals served are lukewarm and just generally low quality. Snacks in the units are nothing but cheap carbs and sodium. You can get 2 grams of protein from a snack tops. All of those decent snacks in the fridge are gone. If you want a milk during a non meal time, you have to bring it back with you and most likely someone will steal it out of the fridge if you do. I started pouring my milks into a 2nd water bottle I had and putting that in the fridge and people would leave it alone. People's insurance pay 917 dollars a day for patients to be here, and the company wants to cheat them out of a few bucks worth of decent food. I've mostly concluded that Cottonwood now operates at the level that all the other mental hospitals have been running at all along in the past, and I just got spoiled by the way it used to be. I don't know if Doctor Willie is now just overrun by a bunch of crap that the new owners are now putting on him to do, or if this is a personal thing that he has decided I am no longer worth his time. I guess the company got bought out recently, and big corporations buying small companies never leads to patients and customers being treated better. I have referred people to Cottonwood for years, and I am not going to do it anymore. I don't know who to blame for all this stuff, but going here will not improve your life. I have a feeling that no mental hospitals in this country improve anyone's lives anymore. If you need to quit alcohol of drugs, find a family member or friend to hold your alcohol or drugs and ration you with them and quit that way. I wrote a 2 page essay to attach to my discharge survey that gets into these issues, but I know they are going to blow off almost all of it. So ya, Cottonwood is now another example of a giant company turnings things to shit. read more

Sad that a person contemplating suicide has to wait 4 hours to been checked in, sitting in a waiting area with rude, non caring, gossipy staff, only to be finally admitted with no room (a mattress on the floor in a windowless room) no food she can eat (she's celiac) and no intake meeting or conversation with anyone other than RUDE non caring staff (not evan a nurse), (this was a Wednesday). Just imagine how she felt 19 years old depressed, scared, alone and hungry ...JUST IMAGINE! Fast forward to Friday through Sunday; she saw NO dr, therapist or anyone that should be helping her, imagine her metal state Sunday afternoon! just imagine. then she asked (begged) to go home and they tell her she will still have to pay for the full 7 days and insurance won't cover if they don't give her an official release. Then Monday still no Dr. still no release, you are supposed to see a DR every day you are there. and i forgot to mention the accounting person hounding for payment. This place should be SHUT DOWN. I will be filing a complaint with the state, my Insurance company and the AMA. 7 days, 7 days with little to no treatment, it's a prison, not a place to come to get help. We drove almost 4 hours and We waited over 4 1/2 hours just for them to tell us that our insurance didn't work and it would be 7000 just to be there. I am a 20 year old opioid addict who came to this place to seak help and they were AMAZING with me. The doctors and nurses, for the most of them, have been through what people come here for and they want to give you the best help they can and give you AMAZING resources. I have made amazing friends in here and for the 1st 2 days I was withdrawaling I begged the doctor to go home, but he knew if I left I would go use again so they gave me medicine and said "Trust me" and on the 3rd day I felt so normal again I cried a little because it has been so long since I've felt good without needing a pill. This place will take care of you if you left them. I couldn't be more thankful and I hope anyone out there looking at reviews for this place remember, people can only get help if they want to get help. PS. I went in for PTSD depression, suicidal ideation. Staff talks badly about patients, had one nurse in particular who said that I was LYING about being suicidal. Absolute scumbag. They lied on my discharge paperwork and they violated HIPPA by putting another person's paperwork in with mine, I have proof. They don't do one on one's so you're in the middle of the open in front of everyone talking about your personal medical/mental problems which makes it difficult for people like me who requires privacy in those situations who don't want everyone else knowing details of my struggles. Another nurse gave me the wrong dose of medication, too much of what I was prescribed. The washing machines are moldy your clothes REEK of mold when you wash them. The ONLY reason anyone ever goes there is because they allow smoking. Their quality of care is absolute garbage. They are money driven not quality drive. They knew my insurance didn't cover my stay but they didn't tell me that until after I signed the paperwork and wouldn't let me leave because of my suicidal thoughts, leaving me stuck with a $6,000+ bill that I have to pay out of pocket. I requested a transfer to a hospital who did accept my insurance and they never transferred me. They kept me longer than I should've been there, stacking up the charges. They do not care about you or your loved ones, they care about money and I hope they end up being shut down. read more

Cottonwood Springs is the only psychiatric hospital I have experienced so my perspective is limited. The lobby is new and clean. I brought my 19 yr old daughter twice for assessment. My first experience was similar to Tiffany's 7/23/21 review. I wasn't prepared for the locked-down nature of the facility. My daughter had been through some major heartbreak and and needed healthier coping skills. I was seeking outpatient care for her. She willingly came with me to Cottonwood Springs and was hopeful about getting therapy and possibly medication. I called ahead and made an appointment and explained the situation. When we arrived the receptionist seemed tired (it was 8pm and the end of her shift). As soon as my daughter heard "safety check", "leave your belongings with your mom", and "take your vitals", she began to fear that I brought her to be admitted overnight. My daughter went into further panic when she tried to leave and the door was locked and the receptionist said she couldn't let her leave until she is screened out by a clinician. I can appreciate the safety measures but these can be very scary to a teenager. It would have been helpful to have been informed of these measures when I called ahead. My daughter met with a clinician in the lobby and refused any services. And then we left. I had to do a lot of repair work at home to reassure my daughter that I wasn't trying to set her up or admit her overnight. I think it worked because my daughter was willing to go back a week later and try again. The second experience was much better! Knowing what to expect made a huge difference and the clinician, Aron, who greeted us was much more warm and friendly than the receptionist. My daughter got matched up to PHP outpatient services and she's excited to begin them tomorrow. read more

I absolutely would NEVER walk into the doors of this place or any company they are involved with. They will tell you one price and bill your insurance for hundreds and hundreds more. They misdiagnosed my child and put them in a group that did not align with her needs, they charged insurance for the program even though she went to ONE session. They told me to dispute the charges, so I did and I called them monthly to follow up and was always told it was still under review. Two weeks ago in my email I get a notification from a debt collector. They sent me to collections??? They never even told me the dispute was resolved, never gave me an opportunity to pay my bill and then told me that it would stay in collections. Absolutely horrible experience and I would never recommend going. Also the "free" evaluation is really billed at $350 to your insurance. They don't care about the person they care about the money. read more

horrible place, do not ever send anyone there. i only saw the dr one time and he just kept pushing more medications. this place needs shut down, that's for sure. got there at 11:15, it took until 1pm before i got back to the unit for detox from alcohol.at 13:45 i had my blood pressure checked and it was a little high 144/80. i was asked another million questions, got my height and weight, made me strip to underware so they could do a skin check. also, on the paperwork i requested before i left, it said that i refused to let them get my waist circumference, which is a lie! they also lied and said that i refused to give them a urine sample. 1st day at: 15:49 they gave me 2mg lorazepam. 15:51 they gave me .1mg clonidine- bp was175/101 that is all they did on my first night there 2nd day 10:06 got 50mg zoloft. 12:00 got lorazepam 1:26 got 1mg lorazepam. 1:26 got .1mg clonidine- bp was 180/81 20:45 got 50mg trazadone. 3rd day 9:32 got 1mg lorazapan. 5:50 got .1mg clonidine. 12:45 got 2mg lorazepam. 14:31 got 1mg lorazepam. there was probabaly more than that, i am pretty sure they didn't give me all the information i requested. you first get in there they take everything away and put it in lockers and you have to ask permission to use any of your toiletries. you have to sleep with your doors open and all night long the staff is laughing at the desk and slamming doors. you get to use your phone 1/2 hour a day and you had to do it in a room with maybe a dozen chairs and nurse gards standing by. we got several 15 minute smoke breaks and the nurses kept your cigarettes and they had to light them for you. when it was time to eat, you had to wait for a nurse to open the door and they sat and watched you eat the whole time. it felt like we were all in prision. after id been there a day, a young girl was there and she was so bad that she couldn't walk, she was shaking like a leaf on a tree. the staff decided that she should be taken to an er. found out from others there that she had had 3 seizures prior to that and they didn't bother sending her then. i pray for that girl. all these medications they had me on made me feel worse than when i came in so i called somone to come and get me. they told me i couldn't leave. guess what after getting threatened of getting the cops called on them for kidnapping, they let me go home. read more

This should be ZERO stars. This place, my god I would never recommend to anyone. I made an appointment for 6pm for have my 19 year old daughter to have an assessment. She has been depressed and withdrawn, but in no way suicidal. We were looking for a possible out-patient program to help her cope and receive medication if needed. This assessment, mind you, is VOLUNTARY. Upon arrival, they took her wallet, cell phone and jewelry. We were told to have a seat until a room was available. About 10 minutes later, they told her to come back and that I could come if she wanted me to. Then they took all of my belongings (purse, keys, jewelry, smart watch) and locked it up. We were led behind a locked door into a small room with 4 chairs and a table. We waited and waited and waited. There is a sign on the wall stating that if you are unable to pay your insurance deductible or make a hefty down payment if you're self-pay, that they will be unable to treat you. Meanwhile, I'm wondering why I even made an appointment. Finally after discussing the situation, we made the choice that this was definitely not the place for her. It was much too intense and over-whelming. So we go and try to knock on the door that leads to the lobby, to no avail. I don't know if everything is sound proof or we were being ignored. Finally, an employee walked down the hallway. We told her we did not wish to seek treatment at their facility and would like to leave. She said, "That's not possible, sorry. A counselor will be with you in 15 minutes or so." I asked if there was a form we could sign to leave and she said no. I said if we tell the counselor we absolutely want to leave, can we and she said it's up to the Dr. Remember, all this was supposed to be is an assessment. I finally had to leave my daughter in the room to go call her dad. It is then I find out it's 8pm, 2 hours after our scheduled appt. As I walked back in, a gentleman asked me if I was so-so's mom and I said yes. He asked me to explain the situation, so I did. He said OK, that's what your daughter said also. Then stated he had to clear it with the Dr and then HOPEFULLY we would be allowed to leave. Thankfully, they finally let us escape. I think this experience caused my daughter more trauma than anything. Avoid this place at all costs. It's a complete joke. They seem more interested in making money off you than helping you. read more

I called this facility to set up an appointment to meet with a doctor to possibly develop a medicine routine and discuss outpatient group therapy. Making the appointment for 6PM, I arrived at the establishment - where I had my belt, wallet, and cell phone taken away from. I found this very odd because I had again set up an appointment to speak with someone professional about options - and was in no way committing myself into any kind of facility. After an hour of waiting in the lobby, I was then taken back to a holding room. I was to wait in the holding room for the next two and a half hours. I was completely alone, no cell phone, no wallet, with literally no clocks on the walls telling you what time had even passed. The only way I found out that information was when I heard people walking outside of the room and was able to peak my head out to ask them what time it was. After waiting in isolation and being told nothing for 2 and a half hours, I had enough and decided to leave - after all, I drove myself to this establishment and walked in, I can do the same thing to leave, right? Wrong. They would not let me leave. They had to ask my girlfriend if it was okay for me to leave the building. I never once gave any emergency contact info or even the personal information about myself including cell phone number, etc. My girlfriend was just waiting in the car and was wanting to leave and get food so needed to tell the front desk associate in case I got out and she was out eating. This same associate also gave my girlfriend all of my belongings (the wallet, phone, and belt) without any permission given by myself and never signing any legal documents stating that I gave that permission. This was one of the worst nights of my life - I was treated like a prisoner and told I couldn't leave when I had enough at 9:30PM, after being there for 3 and half hours. I've talked to several people about this, who all agree something needs to be done. Maybe even legal action. read more

Once they found out we were leaving the experience went further downhill. I cannot decide who was rudest, the receptionist or the councilor. Yikes. I tried the outpatient program here after experiencing some postpartum anxiety and insomnia. I'm pretty confident the lady who led my first class had worse anxiety then I did. She started by telling the class that we should not binge watch Netflix at night as that could hurt our sleep. I felt like a first grader as we spent 30 minutes going around the class telling each other our favorite breakfast food. The lobby smelled so strong like cigarette smoke that I wanted to puke. The walls were all white and I felt like I was in jail. After learning absolutely nothing in my first "class" - except for everyone in the room's favorite breakfast - I went to the bathroom and called my husband and told him this was going to be a waste of time and money. Lucky for me, I had the support I needed at home and felt confident they would be able to help me more then this place. I was there a total of 2.5 hours and was billed $330. The worst part is that today I called Cottonwood Springs Billing for the FIFTH time to ask them to run the bill through insurance. They just won't do it! What a sad scam for people who need the help more than I did. The only thing worse then battling anxiety or depression, is spending tons of money and accruing debt only to find out the place is a joke. If at all possible find a good support network and doctor and a different program that has decent reviews. read more

Although the assessment was time consuming, the treatment CWS offers is top notch in both inpatient and outpatient programs. I would suggest any confusion be addressed at the time , asking my family to be involved and creating an aftercare that plan that is convenient to my lifestyle. It's taken me over a year to write this review, because this hospital caused me trauma in so many ways. It's left impacts that I won't ever be able to erase. I was taken there after having a bipolar episode. I was vulnerable and afraid. When I got there, within the first two days I was stripped off of my psychiatric meds cold turkey, which caused my symptoms to elevate uncontrollably. The staff was aware and did nothing to help me despite me sobbing daily. My doctor took a look at my history of medications, and then actually asked me what I wanted to be put on. I was not in the right state of mind, nor am I a doctor, and no doctor should ever ask a patient this. My family called and spoke to the doctor, and he had the same nonchalant attitude with them. Meanwhile I was becoming worse, went somewhat psychotic, and tried to hurt myself. I punched a wall out of frustration and instead of helping me the staff told me to stop or I would be legally fined for property damage. At one point I did hurt myself and was put on observation. I was locked out of my room, and could not eat in the cafeteria with others. They had me eat in the unit and eat with my hands. I was still not appropriately medicated. At one point I had to leave to another hospital for a few hours for a separate medical issue. Prior to leaving, a member of staff cornered me in the exam room, shut the door, and told me "You know you're coming back here, right?" The other hospital tried to help me, but this facility called them and basically told them I was just crazy. I was transferred to a temporary ER psych room at that hospital then back to this facility. Due to issues they found at the hospital, I was put on antibiotics for the remainder of my stay. It is the combination of antibiotics, unclean surfaces, and being made to eat with my hands that my doctors outside there believe caused me to pick up a very dangerous infection that eventually left me bedridden and extremely ill for two months, has caused lasting health issues, and eventually caused me to need surgery. I am lucky my family was so supportive when I was in there. They recorded all the exchanges they had with me and my doctors, and I have since read them and know I wasn't remembering things wrong. I had to lie my way out of this place so that I could begin to heal and get real help. I cannot express enough how much I believe this place cares far more about profit than it does about patients. I have never seen so much unprofessionalism in a supposed health setting. Save yourself heartache and go somewhere else. It would have saved me a lot of pain. read more

Today I'm celebrating three years of sobriety. I feel that cottonwood gave me a unbelievable foundation to build from. I spent time in Cottonwood's in patient detox, then partial patient, and transitioned to their IOP. I'm forever grateful that I was given the opportunity to turn my life around in such a top notch facility. The support and guidance I was given by the care team especially Dr. Williey was key in my path to sobriety. They were well versed in addiction, direct with me, and gave me hope. My time at CWS changed my life in the absolute best way possible. I do not want to invalidate anyone else's experiences with my review but I do not agree with everything being said. Yes, I did have to wait awhile for my intake assessment, they warned me it would take awhile and I'm there for help, so what if it takes a little longer to get it? I was in a safe environment, I could've brought someone back with me, I elected not to, you do not have to wait alone. I'm happy my possessions were taken before I went back there, I was in distress and my items could have been used to harm me in one way or another. The staff was kind to me there, because I was kind to them. I took this place seriously, I went there to get better, so I tried and worked the program. God did it work, I had great staff members who listened to me and helped me with anything I asked of them. They offer AA, lgbtq+ centered groups, I truly felt like they tried their hardest to make everyone comfortable. I made friendships there with my fellow patients that will last a lifetime. I want to live. That's a feeling I never thought I would get back. (Yes the food stopped me up a little bit, like another review said, but I asked for a laxative and I was happily given one by the staff) Thank you CWS staff for treating me with respect and rooting for me, when I was not rooting for myself. Don't go here if you're truly depressed, suicidal, and suffering from severe anxiety. They'll kick you out without giving you a referral to another place, and helping you take steroids to get in someplace else. calling them, desperately trying to get back in, they won't call you back. I'm not talking one call, I'm talking almost 10 attempts to get someone to return a​ call. They'll take a situation they know nothing about, make a judgement they're unqualified to make, and decide to kick the person to the curb. Oh sure, if you're lucky enough to actually get someone to talk to you, you'll get lip service. I told them if they won't advocate for me, I'm not going to bother trying anymore. I have a history of suicide attempts and placed my life in their hands, this place Does. Not. Care. I tried as hard as I could, but that's not good enough for them. There's blood on their hands. If a mental health hospital doesn't think I'm worth them helping me fight for myself, clearly I'm not worth fighting for. You're a failure, cottonwood. read more

My son was admitted to Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, KS for alcohol treatment and seizures. He was sent to Cottonwood Springs in Olathe, KS. With a back of personal belongs including some clothes and wallet with all of his identification. In addition the physicians order and medicine for seizures and withdrawals. It also had me as the contact person. I tried for a few days to get in touch but they would give me no information. Finally someone looked at the paper work let me know that he was sent to the emergency room at Olathe Med Center for severe withdrawals and seizures. He's never given any of the medicine prescribed and the never informed the hospital of the information. In addition they kept the bag with all of his belongings on the orders and the meds rather than sending them to the ICU. I tried to get them to send it but they refused. He was in critical condition for few days before he stabilized. He was then sent home to Lawrence where we live. I don't drive and neither does my son because of seizures. Not only would the not help us for two weeks I tried to talk to someone and the refused to reply or answer my calls. I was finally able to get a friend to drive the two hours there and back to pick it up. I tried to get them to send it COD but no luck.when my friend arrived with my son they did even check if he was the right person. There is no doubt that my son spent time in the ICU because of their negligence. I even sent a message to the CEO, Jason Toalson and get no response. He went all of that time at Cottonwood without the meds that were necessary to help him get better. I think it is important for people to know this organization. I have still received no communication from them. read more

I voluntarily checked myself in to CWS. The washer and dryers make your clothes smell like mold. The cafeteria food tastes horrible and makes you constipated and the staff refused to listen to me about not being able to make a bowel movement for over four days. They keep the lights on at night and the over night nursing staff talks all night as well, making it difficult to sleep. I did not get to meet with my therapist or psychiatrist until after they billed my insurance even though I asked multiple times. They ended up keeping me for eleven days so they could charge me for a full stay. They messed up my meds and had me asleep for two entire days and then accused me of isolating. This place is absolutely trash. Don't let the pretty pictures fool you. read more

this place is awful. if you love the person seeking help dont put them in this place unless you want to deal with the effects of trauma after. they treated her poorly. talked negatively about her, left her unresponsive in her bed. she needed medical treatment and they just left her. we will be dealing of the after effects of a three day stay for a while now. they make you think they have legal pull and it's all a lie. they want to make money and keep the beds full. any person working here should have a hard time going to bed at night. this place is awful. read more

My experience here is mind blowing. The way I was treated made me feel even worse by the end of treatment. They want you to ask for help and when I did I was made to be feel even more shameful and guilty for asking and speaking up for myself. Now I am having problems with my job because they sent back and aren't covering my absences when I physically was in their care. Very confusing and irritating.... read more

I was a voluntary patient in Cottonwood Springs in mid-January 2019. While the group sessions were helpful, I was desiring one on one therapy and counseling. When I asked a therapist named "Brandon" if I could get a one on one appointment with him, his response was "I have 72 hours before I have to see you". As an HR Director, this was a very troubling response to me. I took this to mean that the primary objective here was to bill my insurance for the most amount of time as possible, 72 hours, regardless of whether I needed to be in the facility for that length of time. I expressed my desire to leave since I was in there voluntarily and not receiving individual therapy, and was threatened with the courts being involved to compel me to stay there. Again, as an HR Director and a patient I found this very disappointing and inappropriate. I am fortunate in that I am in a progressive Health Plan option known as SPIRA through Blue Cross Blue Shield of KC. They actually sent a case manager to the facility. Brandon all of the sudden approached me out the blue to say "your insurance guy is here. You don't have to talk to him." My response was "Why wouldn't I talk to him, he's my advocate?" Low and behold, later that same day (after 48 hours in the facility) I had a meeting scheduled with Brandon. I can't help but wonder what happens to other patients who do not have advocates who let the facility know they're being monitored, at least from a billing standpoint? My 26 year old roommate constantly complained that they were not helping him. Simply overmedicating him which resulted in him sleeping all day. I tried to help by waking him up and encouraging him to go to the cafeteria with me for meals. I also asked staff to help him, but my requests fell on deaf ears. I'm sorry to say I cannot, and WILL NOT recommend this facility to friends and employees in my organization who may be struggling with mental health issues. This facility does not place the interests and needs of its patients above its for profit motive of billing their insurance companies for as much as they can. read more

The team at Cottonwood Springs did a tremendous job caring for my family member, who required tools and understanding of her current conditions. Their outpatient program provided the flexibility she needed to feel both supported and in control of her life. The family education program has saved mine. I went here on the recommendation of my therapist, and when I called, they acted as though I could come in for an assessment for an IOP (what my therapist who has seen me for a year recommended). When I got there, they took half of my possessions and led me to a back area I later learned was locked. I was told it would take an hour and a half for the assessment. I waited for three hours in isolation with the nurse on duty telling me she'd check in and bring me Sudoku but not doing so. When I finally saw a clinician for an intake, she began asking me questions that completely misinterpreted what I was trying to tell her. No one informed me what was going on, and after only about five minutes of talking to her, she said she was going to talk to the doctor about having me admitted to an in-patient program. I said that was not what I came for, and she said "well the door is locked, and that is up to the doctor." I called to explore my options, not be held against my will. The clinician also said she'd get my dad and talk with him which she didn't, and he only came back when I finally begged the nurse to get him. The staff here is rude, presumptive, deceptive, and will not inform you of what is happening. I felt like I was a character in the second season of American Horror Story. They should be communicative and open with their patients about their process, not lie and fail to disclose what is happening to the patient. My clinician didn't listen to me, and she treated me as though I could not understand what she was saying. She put words in my mouth, and she threatened that I could not go if I wanted to when I never signed off or was informed of my rights. This place has made me very wary of mental health providers and makes me not want to seek treatment. read more
