Have been a business member since 2014 and have been less than 6 times. Have no desire to return and never leave thinking "oh, I wish I had of got that".
PROS
Easy enough to get around during week and non public holidays - not too busy. Sufficient parking.
Some items very reasonable i.e. Pocky sticks (a bulk pack of 10 is not much dearer than a single pack from the shop).
If you know your prices then you can shop well and get the cheaper items.
Food court at exit has reasonably priced food.
Part of a club/membership.
The confectionary section near the checkouts is a highlight for me - strawberry freddos in bulk, huge containers of jelly belly jelly beans, and giant blocks of cadbury chocolate that you could never eat before it got stale, always enthrals me.
The hot chooks are large and well priced and very tasty.
During busy periods they have taste testing of products.
Some items can be bought in bulk for considerably less than some items at the supermarkets.
They have some items you can't get elsewhere i.e. the orange american style plastic cheese.
North Lakes shops close by; i.e. Myer, cinema, restaurants etc (we always have lunch there).
CONS
Extremely busy on weekend - parking insufficient and queues to checkout resemble Theme Park busy holiday periods.
They need a sign on the highway heading south at the exit reminding you to take it to get to Costco - they don't.
Not all items cheaper than stores i.e. Woolies has 24 pack of Kirks on special for $10 - Costco's price was $17.99.
If you don't know/forgot your prices (I thought I did but when in store this wasn't the case on more than one occasion) - then you will overpay for items at Costco that you could have got cheaper at Woolies.
Food court food is very reasonably priced but I steer clear of most of it as it was more "junk" style food and not really worth the increased weight, fat content, or ill feeling gained from its intake. But this is the same everywhere you eat - i.e. you choose what is suitable for your dietary/taste requirements.
Food court is inside only, with limited seating. Outdoor, undercover seating should be provided as it is desperately needed.
Membership fees need to be paid annually. I think these should be credited to your account if you make purchases to a certain value.
Your trolley, receipt, card and items get checked on exit. The membership clause/management advises that this is to ensure you weren't overcharged. However, it appears to be more to check you haven't stolen item/s or underpaid. It is intrusive and I resent it immensely. I see it as unreasonable and an invasion of my privacy.
I hate the entry - I call it the "man zone" i.e. cameras and electrical and junk that you just can't wait to get past.
The staff aren't overly friendly. The chicken department refused to give me/pack me a hot chook one time until he had taken all of them out of the rotisserie (I think there were approximately 70 chooks).
Costco never has xmas stock and its stuff doesn't seem to change. The store is the same year after year. It gets really boring after a while.
Taste testing is painful sometimes as even though they might have some jelly belly jelly beans out already, you have to wait until the whole tray of testers if full before you can take your tester patty paper of three jelly beans (that's the rules!!!). Oh, and when they give you the frozen cream puffs (that are meant to be served at room temperature) and they haven't bothered to defrost them first - you really wish you hadn't bothered.
A lot of the products we have purchased have been inedible or not to our taste. i.e. frozen Mozarella sticks, apple pastizis. Our fat labrador won't even eat their bulk pigs ears; so there must be something wrong with them!!!! The neighbours dog wouldn't touch them either.
Bulk is not always better; a lot of the products we have purchased were thrown out prior to finishing i.e. 1 kg red rock honey soy chips - we got sick of them and although there was nothing wrong with them - we just had way too many at the one time.
Limited variety of products/brands i.e. I like double length toilet paper - they have none. They only have a couple of varieties of toothpaste, shampoo and so on. Costco chooses what brands to sell and there seems to be no consumer input regarding this.
Some of the fruit is hit and miss; bought a whole watermelon and it was perfect in colour and texture; but tasted like water. Bough some beautiful plums but they were $25 for 12 so they were no steal, but they were perfect quality.
The meat is good, nothing wrong with it, but I just don't find it is cheaper. I really don't.
I really like going for a squiz at Ikea and coming home with a few goodies that I will never use i.e. ice cube trays. But, I always enjoy it and find it interesting. I don't mind the food court at Ikea either and like the variety of home furnishings. However, I really don't fancy Costco. I wonder if it is better in America. read more
