I was introduced to Black Pudding, an acquired taste for even the English- pigs blood and intestines mashed into a hockey puck. I have nothing to compare it to but a taste of it was good for me. It was crispy, soft like pudding and a bit sweet. I opted for the tuna panini which was terrific. I read it came with chips which I figured were fries but got actual potato chips which was fine I guess. Michael said his All Day Breakfast was spot on except for the sausage which he described as cheap or watery. The other lads said there's were fine and devoured it spite being hung over. Before breakfast I asked to walk past the gates to witness the sprawling fields. I was welcomed with a bit of apprehension and took a few photos as you may see. Apparently no one asks to go back into the farm. I breathed in the cool air and appreciated the beauty of the English horizon. I was met by the owner, Bill Williams, in a tractor who stopped me to have a bit of a chat. He is a funny man when he said the view was "alright" and there wasn't much to see. I learned the farm was 400 acres and how he had a kick travelling the California coast line several years ago. When I return to Chester I will be sure to come back and eat here and say hello.

I went for the Teriyaki Steak Wrap and ordered some sweet potato fries. My Mum had the pie of the day which was steak. We both just got teas for drink. The teas came fairly quickly but the food took quite a while - my Mum said in the past, the food sometimes does take awhile. The place was pretty busy when we arrived but by the time we got our food, it was surprisingly quiet for a Sunday lunch time. As for the actual food, the wrap is not bad. The steak I think was a touch dry but there was quite a lot of sauce. The disadvantage of this was it was a bit messy. The sweet potato fries were OK - not as crispy/crunchy as I would have liked My Mum's steak pie was a bit dry. It came with gravy which it needed. But still could taste the dryness. Shame. The pie came with some "Cheshire chips" - basically standard chips. There was hope that the chips would be triple fried - which all chips seem to be nowadays - but not sure if that was the case. So overall just all OK. Nice place, service a touch on the slow side and food a bit "average". My Mum has actually been several times and been with different people and overall on all visits had good food so I would not hesitate to go back again. When we arrived, I saw someone get a full English breakfast which looked nice.

Mothers Day Surprise!…read more We wanted to take the Mothers somewhere nice and out of town and had seen The Garden Kitchen had been visited by a number of our friends and family on Facebook, all giving great reviews and I can see why! We arrived for final service at 6pm and as you can imagine it was very busy on Mothers Day. The maître d' came straight over to us to let us know how long it would be until we were seated and continuously gave us progress updates. Whilst waiting we perused the small shop of local produce, had a drink and soaked up our surroundings. The Tea Room is a new addition to Holden Clough Nursery being built in the last few years, but looks like it should have always been there! It is beautiful and sympathetically designed to its surroundings. So, the food....WOW! I'd seen pictures but when our Afternoon Tea arrived on a mini picnic bench I felt like clapping!! (In fact, I think I did!!) Such a great idea and adds a little bit of originality and quirkiness to your experience. Everything on my picnic bench was delicious. The Mushroom soup was silky, creamy and full of flavour. The mini Roast Beef Dinner served in an individual yorkshire pudding was beautiful and of course came with a little jug of gravy and beef was tender and pink. The scone was fresh and light with jam that had just the right sweetness and fruit mix. My other main highlight was the Rocky Road, I'm not usually a fan because its too rich and sweet but O-M-G this was amazing. I still find myself thinking about it now two days on. The chocolate melts in your mouth to find small nuggets of biscuit and mini marshmallows.....all washed down with a great cup of coffee. John & Kate who own and run The Garden Kitchen have done a fanstastic job transforming Holden Clough Nursery over the last few years. The service, quality of food and surroundings are 10/10. I went with my mum, sister and partner for the Valentine's afternoon tea, it was great it was so different from traditional afternoon tea you got soup in a tea cup, two open top sandwiches and a mini quiche which was a nice change from just sandwiches. The cakes you got was a scone. A mini red velvet cake, a heart biscuit, marshmallows with chocolate, profiterole with white chocolate and a mini love potion in a glass boot. We got a glass of pink proseco it was £19.99 each which is a little expensive for the place as its a tree nursery but they do a different theme for different seasons so it's well worth a visit. The restaurant features freshly made dishes made with homegrown seasonal produce. While visiting our family in Liverpool, we came here as a group for afternoon tea. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law had been here before, so they knew it was great and brought us back, along with my husband's grandparents. Do take note, you have to book your table in advance. We sat in one of the backrooms which was very cozy and inviting, albeit a bit noisy from a rowdy group of "ladies who lunch," but it was fine once they left. We all really appreciated that savory items were included in the the afternoon tea. The menu features a selection of sandwiches, savouries, a cup of soup, a bucket of chips, a selection of cakes and a mini trifle. Plus your choice of a pot of tea or cup of filter coffee. I was happily surprised at the wide variety of teas! There was ample to eat. My husband and I ate our entire afternoon tea, but everyone else in our group had a few sweet treats left to take home. The food was very delicious. I loved the little quiche best along with the soup served in a cute tea cup and saucer! Plus, the little basket of chips was a nice touch! Scrumptious! Also, it's just 14 pounds for Afternoon Tea which I think it a great value for such a delicious savory tea. Afterwards, my family browsed the farm store and boutique which featured a lot of cute country style home goods and seasonal produce and artisanal food items. Do go upstairs to poke around at their merchandise. It's cute. I really enjoyed this afternoon tea and I'd love to return next time we're back to visit my husband's family!

Its a lovely farm setting with the barn serving food and beverages indoors in the lavender decorated tearoom or outside in the courtyard and gardens. There are numerous lavender plants in the setting some for sale in pots and quite a lot growing in beds around the grounds. I had a cream tea and it was lovely, fresh hot scone and jam. This place has a really relaxed feel and there were dogs lazing around and waiting to catch any nibbles. The menu included Freshly made Sandwiches. Soup and Desserts.

I like coming here and buying a handful of things whilst ensuring myself that one day I shall buy all of my food from this sort of place. Fresh vegetables, local (and gorgeous Edinburgh) gin, fill my spice rack, and my fridge with black bomber cheese and rabbit pate and fancy scotch eggs. They have handmade chocolates and macarons in a little counter at 100g for £4, which I believe is the same, or at least very similar to Thornton's servery, and less than my local card shop. I'm always drawn to the large array of bagged dried fruit (I've had a problem for dried papaya since childhood). There's always some chocolate with stupid, bright, badly designed packaging with silly, soppy slogans all over them. The baskets are big and cute, and there's loads of great meat, interesting tea, coffee, jams, beer, wine, gift ideas to keep you searching the store. Charmingly, and kind of irritating, the staff are so lovely and helpful and quick to say hello with a smile, you feel super guilty if you leave with nothing, and that's already hard with the produce on offer. I "oohed" at some passion fruit vodka earlier, and out of nowhere popped a woman with a sample (there was a stand, the staff weren't casing customers), I didn't partake because I was driving, but it smelled gorgeous. I can't mark it down because of the price, because there are some steals- and that's the nature of quality stuff.
