Overall it looks nice, although the rooms themselves could use some updating. Our bedroom was small, but had so much (unusable) furniture in it that we had to turn sideways to walk around the bed. Yet, we had no bedside tables. The bathroom was updated and the shower worked great. The hotel also helpfully arranged transportation for us, which can be daunting in a city with no cars. They offered a complimentary welcome Bellini and they had a porter for our bags. They offer a small buffet breakfast that's included in the price, and the restaurant serves good food in the evenings if you want to stay in. The staff were nice, with the notable exception of the refund issue below. Travelers should know two things: 1. NO ELEVATOR. Obviously it is an older building, but it's not retrofitted. They don't proactively tell travelers that there are 57 stairs to the 5th floor rooms. We booked a room on the 5th floor and then, after reading reviews, learned about the lack of an elevator. We had to move to a cheaper, 1st floor room because our group was unable to climb that number of stairs. The hotel would not refund the price difference. Had we known all of this at the time of booking, we would have made different plans. Suggestion: Be transparent on your website about the number of stairs / lack of elevator. 2. NO A/C when we visited. We arrived on a 74F day to be told they turn off the A/C and turn on the heat in September. Needless to say, our room was HOT. They suggested opening our room's only window, which led to dozens of mosquito bites overnight. Suggestion: Don't advertise A/C if it's only available at the hotel's discretion. Overall, we enjoyed Venice and the hotel was adequate. If staff had been able to solve the two issues above, which are largely related to transparency and customer experience, we would have had an even better experience.

Basic no-nonsense hotel near St. Mark's Basilica…read more I have a few basic requirements for a hotel room in Venice: clean, comfortable, inexpensive and near St. Mark's Basilica. There is nothing like staying up late into the night listening to the dueling orchestra's in St. Mark's Square and then a 5 minute walk back to the hotel with a smile on your face. All of those requirements are met with Ca' del Dose. There are only 6 rooms in this tiny hotel and my party of 8 nearly rented out the entire place. You have to tell them when you're arriving at the hotel so they can meet you. After that you keep your keys and you can wander in and out of the hotel like it's your own private apartment. I love that feeling! Someone comes in some time during the day and cleans your room and refills the miniscule but surprisingly tasty breakfast. Someone is at the front desk during the morning and afternoon but other than that you have the tiny place to yourself. The rooms are all basic and some rooms even have a balcony. This is one of the easiest hotels to find in Venice. From St. Mark's Basilica walk towards the gondolas, turn left at the water, keep the water to your right, go over 4 bridges and then turn left at the next alley. The hotel is on your right. Ask if they give a discount for paying in cash.

We had our own apartment so we had our own keys, but be advised that someone is not at the front desk 24/7 but there is a phone number in case you need someone. Just not sure how available they are.

Only 2 adults and 1 suitcase will fit in it. Reception is on the 4th floor. Very impressed by the security of the hotel. It provided all the toiletries and amenities we needed for a quick stay. The slippers were a nice touch. Wifi was fast and steady. They have an old style hair dryer that takes longer to dry hair so if you're hair-conscious, you might want to bring your own trusty hair dryer. Breakfast nook was quaint and charming. No cooked hot food but offered delicious prosciutto, salami and brie cheeses plus the usual croissant, toast, jam variety. We use 110v on all our gadgets so we needed an adapter. Don't worry- for 10 euro deposit, they will lend u an adaptor as well as lock and key for the room safe. Very quiet at night. There's a souvenir kiosk right outside the hotel and a gondola service steps away. English tv channels was a plus ! We loved our stay and highly recommend this boutique hotel! If you choose to stay outside of Venice, you would have to take the train in daily and miss out on the magical moments in the morning and at night. The downside of staying on the island is that these buildings are super old and the infrastructure is tight and dated. So we booked this primarily for location and pricing as a secondary consideration. The room did look dated in the photos but we accepted it. Prior to our check-in I was contacted on What's App by Umberto with information about the stay and some pre-check-in tasks. I liked that they had lock boxes for our keys since we arrived after their receptionist hours, and we had to make payment the morning after check-in. Upon arrival the room was as dated as its' photos and we really felt the need to air our the room with the windows. It didn't have a screen so unfortunately a bug came in. Sigh. And the space was really tight. There was a random step inside that I tripped on and hurt myself. The bathroom was extremelyyyy tight. They had these drinks in a fridge that didn't work, but a menu sheet with prices if you touch them. No thanks. If the fridge worked I could have at least bought my own drinks and chilled them. The bed was still and the sheet was thin. The pillows were the flattest pillows ever. So support whatsoever. Not comfortable at all. We were only there for 2 nights thankfully but it was the worst sleep I had during my Europe trip. As for the positives, it was so convenient to walk around. It was 10-15 minutes to walk to the Rialto Bridge, St. Marks Square, Doge Palace... and we were able to walk and wonder around all of the islands at night. It was fun and spontaneous to immerse ourselves in the Venice culture. They provide some complimentary teas and coffee each morning between 8-10am. Since it was so close to everything, we were able to come back to reset every time we needed to use the restroom or drop off goods, or rest in between plans. The morning after our first night I came down to make the payment. It was so strange they put a hold on my credit card for the first night and needed me to pay that, then a different transaction for the remaining amount... and also a tourist VAT payment that must be paid for in cash which was 2€ per person per night during the time of our visit. On our last night there I texted their 24 hour hotline on WhatsApp for more toilet paper, because I feel safe having some over night... and they responded that they can bring it in the morning... ... ... I'd be leaving by then. Pointless. In the morning the receptionist was there when we were leaving so I gave the key back to her. She asked if we bought/drank any of the drinks, and we didn't so no additional costs. There was a lot I didn't enjoy but I feel like I would have the same issues with most other places on the island since everything was built hundreds of years ago.

But since a lot of other places seemed to be booked up the weekend we needed, and we didn't want to break the bank - we decided to just give it a try, since we were only staying one night anyway. It turns out, it wasn't too bad. The beds look old (but clean), but the room and bathroom look like they have been renovated. We had four people in one room with four single beds (one turned out to be a single sofa bed) so it was a tight fit. And I mean TIGHT. But since we were only in the room to shower and sleep anyway, this wasn't an issue for us. One thing you should know, that I don't remember being mentioned on their site - check in is actually at their sister hotel - Ca' Bragadin, about two blocks away (or whatever you call the streets in Venice). So if you have a travel buddy, I would lug everything to San Lio first, have one person head over to Ca' Bragadin to check in, and then someone at San Lio will give you the key. Other useful info: 1. There's a safe in the room 2. The WiFi sucks 3. To check out, you won't have to walk back to the other hotel. Just leave the key in the room and shut the door behind you 4. Right by the Rialto Bridge and the vaporetto 5. It can get a little loud from people on the streets. Overall, it's a good choice if you're on a budget.

Eating breakfast outside in the courtyard was great and quiet despite the position of the hotel. The square round the corner ( San Stefano)had a selection of restaurants with reasonably priced tourist menus and an ice cream shop which was billed as the best in Venice by one of our guidebooks. This hotel was excellent value for money. The only addition we would have found useful is a safe in the rooms. Would we go back to Domus Ciliota? DEFINITELY

The bed was pretty comfortable, and the shower stall was pretty spacious. There was a towel warmer, which was a luxury I have never experienced before - felt so nice to have a warm towel! The free continental breakfast buffet was pretty good, available from 7:30-10am. No hot foods, but there was an assortment of pastries, croissants (regular and cream filled), yogurts (plain and fruity), 2 cereals, canned peach halves, jams, and hazelnut spread. Also apples, bananas, and easy-peel mandarins/clementines. The red-headed gentleman who ran the breakfast room was really nice. You order drinks and coffees from him, and he prepares a basket of baked goods for your table. After checkout, you can leave your luggage at the hotel for as long as you like.

We rented a room, but ended up getting an apartment. We expect changes when traveling, so we just went with the flow and was extremely happy with our outcome. The location is very convenient to public transportation, walking distance to all the shops and restaurants, but tucked into a quite corner where there is no noise at night and very peaceful. I recommend that you pack very light when traveling here. All streets are cobblestone and you cross a lot of bridges with stairs, so it's a struggle transporting luggage even if you have good rollers on them. Although you can hire luggage transporters in the street as well for $30 or so. The continental breakfast was really nice with an egg, croissants, cheese and espresso. Keep in mind that these buildings were constructed hundreds of years ago, way before modern plumbing and elevators, so bathrooms are smaller than American standards and a lot of times there's no elevators, which is another good reason to pack light. I loved the rustic charm of this place, and can not wait to return! So many wonderful memories.
