The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption

Visited Cathedral St. Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco to venerate the St. Francis of Assisi…read moreRelic and to view the paintings of the exhibit which runs from Oct. 17-Nov. 28, 2026. I hadn't been to Cathedral in decades! We used to pick up my cousin from high school back in the day. Brought back memories for my brother and I. It's such a lovely, modern church with high ceilings and great architecture. We were lucky to get street parking right in front. The art pieces in the exhibit include Dono Doni's late-Renaissance Franciscan devotional painting "Stigmata of Saint Francis" and "Crucifixion of Saint Francis," the Cimabue painting of "Saint Francis of Assisi" by Cenni di Peppo, the famous painting of the veil of St. Clare, Adamo di Cladaro's "St. Francis," and the 17th-century anonymous painting "St. Francis Watched Over by the Angels." The St. Francis relic available to venerate is a first-class relic of his blood taken from the side wound of the stigmata he received, which is kept in La Verna, Italy. It is said that after experiencing a visitation from a crucified angel on Sept. 14, 1224, St. Francis developed wounds in his hands, feet, and side. Amazingly, the Franciscan friars of La Verna have guarded St. Francis' blood for 800 years!! We didn't have to stand in line very long which was nice as I've waited longer for other relic exhibitions I've seen. There were only about 7 or 8 people ahead of us. You can't take photos or videos once in the enclosed exhibit area and the relics & artwork have alarm sensors to prevent people from touching the artwork. There's also a monitor outside and security guard inside to control the flow of people coming in. Hopefully the artwork stays safe!! I was so glad to be in town to see this special exhibit. We walked around the church and saw a few of the replicas of 21 California missions created for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island. There's so much natural light coming in so you can see views of the city in the tall glass windows. There are other statues like the Lady of Guadalupe, Assumption of Mary into Heaven, Jesus Christ with Mary and a couple of Disciples. The gift shop was closed since it was a Monday. Check out the exhibit if you can as well as the church. 2026 is a Jubilee Year of the 800th Anniversary of the Transitus of St. Francis of Assisi.

I've never felt so welcomed and at home like I have at City Life Church. They have a motto that simply states, "You don't have to do life alone." The worship team is phenomenal, and they conduct worship, where you know its spirit filled. PJJ, Pastor Quez, and the rest of the pastoral staff always bring down the house with the word. I love that they're all so approachable. During the week, you can connect with folks through their life groups, which really hone in a sense of community. You really can come as you are with no judgment. People come in casual attire, and during Giants, Warriors, and 49ers seasons, you'll often see a bunch of folks listening to the word while supporting their team. The church doesn't have a parking lot, but they've partnered with the Lowe's across the street where you can safely park your car on the second floor parking structure. Although the service is conducted in english, they have spanish and portuguese translation for anyone who needs it. On Sundays, you're always greeted with fresh coffee, hot chocolate, and a great smile. During the summer months, they have partnered with food vendors to support their businesses and have a different food truck out after each service wirh yummy snacka, free of charge. What got me the most was that they're intentional about doing church outside it's four walls. They're out there every week serving the community. They've helped the community by developing a community garden and clean ups. They've adopted a George Washington Carver Elementary school by investing in the kids and the teaching staff. They have a strong partnership with a nearby shelter and work with non profits such as Foster the City that help foster kids and their families stay rooted in SF and Monilize Love which brings all kinds of services out to the community. Their support stretches even further than the local neighborhood they're in by supporting students as far as Galileo High School. It's such an awesome church that's doing so much good work for San Francisco. I feel so blessed and loved to be a part of this church family. Come and visit us. Bring yourself, a friend, your co-worker and your whole family. You absolutely won't regret it! My heart has never been so healed and full because of this community of people.

The seating can be a little cramped, it's in an older building, but it's still comfy. A big highlight of this church is it's performances (Spring musical, Christmas Eve candlelight, the comedy improv night etc.). Worth a sunday visit and staying around after and before service. The java is killer. Bagels, toast, donuts, and really delicious coffee. And if you're not into that type of food then there's plenty of local restaurants as well. This is a great spot to go to for very lively worship on sunday mornings. Saturday nights are excellent too! Just check it out, the pastoral staff is very wholesome and welcoming.

During my time there, I trusted members with personal information. Over time, I came to believe that this information was discussed behind my back in ways that felt disrespectful and damaging. Instead of direct communication, there seemed to be judgment and private conversations about me, including my financial situation, which felt intrusive and shaming rather than supportive. What concerned me most, however, were statements and situations that felt threatening and deeply unsettling. There were comments about taking control over people's lives and even statements that came across as threats involving my family. At one point, I experienced a situation where a vehicle came near my home and I genuinely feared for my grandfather's safety based on what had been said to me. Whether others interpret that differently or not, it created a real sense of fear and crossed a line that no church should ever approach. This environment felt driven by fear, control, and intimidation rather than care, humility, and truth. I'm sharing this not out of spite, but out of concern for others. A healthy church should build people up, respect boundaries, and communicate directly--not operate in ways that make people feel unsafe or targeted. Please use discernment if you are considering getting involved here.
