Is there a lifetime guarantee for the laser eye surgery?

I don't think there is a lifetime guarantee for ANYTHING!!! Lasik probably lasts about 12-15 years, then we'll probably need to do it again, depending on each person's eyes.

What is the recovery time for Lasik surgery?

The initial recovery time for Lasik is overnight - you should be able to see and work the next day. The vision continues to get even better as you heal. You have to be the most careful about your healing for the first week, so you can't do any… Read more

I hate everything about this place and would rather go blind than to repeat my experience here…read more One morning, a dark curtain covered the top of my left eye, and I presented myself to UCSD urgent care. It was a Sunday, so the urgent care nurse told me I needed to go to the ER to be seen by a specialist. At the ER, I waited 10 hours to be seen by an ophthalmologist, who diagnosed me with a retinal detachment and told me I needed to go to Shiley the following morning at 7 am. Despite showing up at 7 am, it took them over 3 hours to see me. The first doctor told me I needed immediate surgery and referred me to a second doctor, who explained they would put a buckle around my eye and the surgery was expected to take an hour or two. Because it was an emergency surgery, I had to get it done at the main hospital two buildings away. After surgery, I woke up with a lot of pain in my eye and was told there were some complications. The surgery ended up taking over 5 hours. In my follow-up, I was told that while draining the fluid underneath the detachment, the retina became stuck and "retinal incarceration," a rare event, occurred. As a result, they had to perform a vitrectomy, which required cutting into my eye and filling it with silicone oil. I also now had a cataract growing in my eye and was told I would need cataract surgery within the year. To add insult to injury, I was charged facilities fees by the minute. The surgery and ER fees the day before resulted in about $10k in out-of-pocket costs with insurance. No wonder the recovery nurse was rushing me to leave after surgery. Funny enough, I was even given a parking ticket for admitting myself to the ER. Thanks UCSD. Since then, the finance department has also been extremely unhelpful in working with me to lower costs, but they don't seem to mind charging me for every follow-up I needed, of which there were many because I needed weekly injections of medication into my eye to prevent scarring. Fast forward a few months and I needed to get the silicone oil extracted from my eye, which the doctor recommended I do before cataract surgery because the oil could cause vision changes. By this point, there were so many bubbles in my eye that it looked like I was staring at a fly eye, but with a lot of blur and so much light diffraction that it gave me a constant headache. I was assured that the oil and bubbles would be removed during surgery. Despite the silicone oil extraction being a "great success," there are still enough bubbles in my eye that make me feel like I'm living underwater. The doctor claims he got all the oil out and that no bubbles can be seen in imaging, but that a fourth surgery can be made to remove the remaining bubbles if needed. Great - I thought getting the oil out was the entire purpose of this surgery. I am now in Shiley for the 4th time in a week and Nth time in the last few months. Every visit, I'm here for a minimum of two hours, most of which is waiting in an ophthalmic exam chair that has the ergonomics of an economy class plane seat. Now I am being advised to not get cataract surgery because the cataract is small and there are risks associated with surgery. Funny how those risks were downplayed when I could be used as a guinea pig for training medical residents. Imagine being told you should feel blessed paying thousands for blurry vision and seeing distracting bubbles float constantly across your vision permanently. What arrogance for these doctors to deliver a result and then tell you that it is an acceptable one regardless of your own feelings. No one seems to want to take responsibility, and all I get are a circle of excuses for why I should be satisfied. Had I known these were the standards doctors had to live by, I would have become a doctor too. At this point, I would have been okay with just losing the eye. If you have to come to Shiley, do yourself a favor and just choose to go blind. They are a research facility and not serious professional practicing physicians who care for their patients.

I Watched My Daughter's Life Change After These Surgeries with Dr Kikkawa…read more I am writing this as a mother who watched her daughter go into what she was told were routine eyelid procedures and come out with permanent consequences she was never warned about. My daughter sought care at Shiley Eye Institute for excessive tearing in one eye. She already had a long-standing dry eye condition, which she clearly disclosed. Dr. Kikkawa recommended multiple procedures to be done together, including tear duct surgery, ptosis repair, and what was described to us as minor skin removal. She was assured these procedures would be safe, would not worsen her dry eye, and would require only a short recovery. We were told she would not be left worse off. That is not what happened. Nearly two years later, I have watched my daughter struggle with chronic eye pain, constant discomfort, and a permanently worsened dry eye condition that multiple specialists have told her will not improve. Her eyelid structure is visibly altered, her eyes no longer look the way they did before surgery, and she now experiences involuntary eyelid spasms. She uses multiple vials of artificial tears every day just to function. What was especially disturbing to me as her mother was how long and painful her recovery was. For over a year, she dealt with severe eyelid pain, slept upright for months, taped her eyes at night, and could not even hold her eyelids open as the day went on. This was repeatedly dismissed as "slow healing," and recovery was now change from 2 weeks to a year which is the time limit for filing a legal case. I was also deeply concerned by what I later learned about consent and documentation. On the day of surgery, my daughter was not allowed to see her informed consent before signing an electronic box, despite requesting to see it. Months later, when she finally obtained the document, it listed serious risks in bold including permanent changes to eyelid structure and worsening dry eye that she was never told about beforehand or assured these were not in fact risks. Instead, she was verbally reassured that her dry eye would not be affected, which directly contradicts what ultimately happened among other awful complications. We were also shocked to learn from the operative record that one of the surgeries was not documented at all. Other surgeons later expressed surprise that all of these procedures were combined given her medical history and that medically unnecessary surgeries were submitted as necessary As a mother, one of the most troubling moments for me was hearing how, just before surgery, Dr. Kikkawa raised his voice at my daughter in the surgical area. She felt scared and pressured to proceed at a moment when she should have been able to pause or reconsider. Patients should know that they still have the right to stop a procedure up until anesthesia is given. I am sharing this because I wish someone had warned us. My daughter trusted that she was being given full, honest information about risks, recovery, and alternatives. Instead, she is living with permanent consequences that could of been foreseen if the surgeon took her history seriously. Patients deserve transparency, so that they can give an informed consent, and the surgeon should have realistic discussions based on evidence not belief especially when multiple procedures are involved. I have never seen my daughter go through something this difficult. No one should. It is heartbreaking.

I lost some peripheral sight, I could no longer see up and down as I could before, and my sight, in general, was much worse - sort of cloudy where they were perfect the day before the surgery. To this day, I'm often asked to open my eyes wider, but, of course, they never will, which limits my eyesight. On top of everything else, he left a bulge in the outer corner of my eyelid. I went to him several times after the surgery just panicked at losing my sight. He said "I will take care of you", which of course he never did. He didn't do a darn thing. The final straw was that he told me ectropion surgery would take up to a year to settle. It never did, but a year is just outside the timeline for a lawsuit. Thanks, Dr. Kikkawa, for ruining my eyesight. Every time I open my eyes I think about the damage you did to them.

Day of the Surgery: The actual procedure was done in a very short period of time. I felt pressure on my eye socket, but nothing else. You just stare at some lights and each eye is done in a matter of 20-30 seconds. Once you're done, they give you protective goggles and send you off with whoever is driving you. You get meds to help you sleep and relax your eyes for the rest of the day. When I woke up from this, I could already see much better. Next Day: I woke up and was astonished at how good my vision was. I have books across the room from my bed and I could read all the titles from where I was laying. Pre-surgery I couldn't even tell there was writing where the titles were. I had my check up at NVision, which I drove myself to and the rest of the day was great. Day 3: This day, my eyes hurt like hell. I took drops a lot and tried to keep my eyes closed a lot. The rest of the week, the pain decreased and went away and my vision continued to improve. I was never more excited when I didn't have to wear the goggles to bed anymore haha Over the next several weeks and months, my eyesight was much crisper than it had ever been when I wore contacts. Colors were more vibrant and I could read street signs much farther away. My eyes needed drops at the beginning and end of days as they were frequently dry and to this day I still have minor halos around lights at night, but damn this eyesight is a dream. If you are eligible for Contura, I would definitely spend the extra money and do it. It made a big difference for me.
