He was mimicking violent behaviours witnessed in a domestic violence situation, including attacking his parental figures and threatening others with violence when he did not get his way. My partner and I entered him into H.O.P.E. Counseling's Day Treatment Program in place of preschool, to address our fears that these violent behaviours would continue into his interactions with children his own age. We also began a psycho-social skill rehabilitation program where a skills teacher came to the home multiple times a week, as well as one-on-one and group family therapy with a therapist. The entire program worked fantastically at addressing the post-traumatic stress suffered by both me and my son, as well as helping him understand the reasons for his violent behaviour and the reasons why that violent behaviour had to cease. We have had no violent incidences in over a year. Our son is now functioning well within an advanced studies program at a Magnet school. He has made friends with a number of his classmates and has grown to be an empathic, loving, and compassionate child who dislikes bullying and who does not threaten to get his way. I could not be more thrilled or more thankful to H.O.P.E. Counseling.

Like others have stated, "It's their way or you get kicked out." If you decide to seek counseling here, I will caution you not to waste your money. You will be treated fine as long as you agree with their lines of thinking. They provide no form of Teaching or Counseling. No workbook or anything to do as homework. You sit in a small room with 10 to 12 others and listen as others talk about their situation and/or their diagram. Don't worry if you do not speak or understand English. You can sit in the group and play on your phone; no participation is required. As long as you go along with the counselor's ideas, thoughts, and opinions, you will be fine. Do not express any of your emotions, as you will be ostracized from the group with no questions asked and no one inquiring why you were upset. Be prepared to be called a liar if you do not bow down to what they think you should have experienced in your life. You will be told that there is something you are hiding, covering up, or do not want the group to know. I do not understand how a counselor knows more about your childhood than you, yet they call you a liar when you are describing how you grew up. It's amazing how much power one person can have over your life and destroy it through a personality conflict with them. Warning: Do not seek any services at Nueva Vida Mental Health. They are not there to assist you in any way; they are merely lining their pockets and wasting your time, while also causing harm to you and your family if you do not bow down to them and agree with everything they say. They create a hostile environment for you to be a part of. How can you pretend to be a professional when you have two individuals, one who only speaks Mandarin and the other, with very broken English, to sit in a group setting while everyone shares, comments, and provides all instructions, etc., coming from the counselor or group members is in English. When I asked a single follow-up question to ensure the new appointment would be reliable, she became hostile claiming she 'couldn't keep going back and forth' despite the call lasting only 10minutes. She also mentioned she was the 'only one working,' admitting the practice lacks backup support. Most Concerning was her condescending tone; she made me feel as though I was having a 'mental episode' for reacting normally to her oversharing and rudeness, effectively gaslighting me into feeling like the unstable one. She then sent an email acting as if she were giving a generous 'choice' to continue, ignoring that her own behavior created the unsafe environment. This combination of inappropriate oversharing, impatience, structural instability, and condescension is unacceptable for a mental health practice. I do not recommend this place to anyone seeking reliable, boundaried, and respectful care. Experiences like this are exactly why so many people are afraid to seek help. When a mental health practice makes a prospective client feel 'crazy' for asking basic questions, it reinforces the dangerous stigma that keeps people away. Research shows that over 70% of people with mental illnesses never receive treatment due to stigma, and 42% of patients hesitate to share concerns with providers specifically due to fear of being judged. Furthermore, studies indicate that perceived stigma from healthcare professionals is directly linked to more severe illness, particularly in conditions like eating disorders where only 30% seek help. Therapy should be the one place where you don't have to manage the staff's emotions or defend your right to clarity. No one should be gaslit into silence when trying to find care.
