I was really excited to find a church so close to home. It is five minutes away and felt like a blessing. I have now attended three Sundays in a row. The worship music is beautiful, the pastor is engaging, and it is clear the congregation has put a lot of heart into creating a space where believers can worship. That said, my experience has been mixed. During my first visit, a woman who seemed to be part of the church's staff or outreach team kindly invited me to a women's Bible study. I appreciated that and truly wanted to join, but my schedule did not allow it. I let her know I would not make it but would attend Sunday services when I could. Over the next two weeks, that same woman repeatedly ignored me, even when I smiled, said hello, and reached out to shake her hand during the greeting portion of service. The third time, she actually looked at me, frowned, and said "I know" when I tried to introduce myself again, refusing to shake my hand. It was awkward and unpleasant. Not how or where I want to spend my day off with bad energy like that. I do not know what caused the negativity, but it gave off a really bad vibes, not what I expected from someone representing a church community. I am mentioning it here because interactions like that can really discourage newcomers who are simply seeking to worship and feel closer to God learn how they can improve themselves, and experience positive interactions with like Minded community on their day off. I may give this church another try because there are good things here, including great music, heartfelt preaching, and kind faces. But I hope leadership is more mindful about who they choose for outreach roles, because one person's attitude can cast a shadow over an otherwise bright congregation. read more

Great church. Feels like home sometimes... the first time no one knew me I came and everyone greeted me with a smile... second time it was different. It felt as if people were running from me. Third time I was better because pastor Steve greeted me at the door so I felt a little better. The issue is that I struggle with depression, anxiety and sometimes rarely feel out of place like the walls are closing in on me and I can't breathe. Basically I get claustrophobic. I need to step out a lot to use the restroom and I catch some people giving me a stink eye haha. It's all good though because I enjoy the worship music and when the pastor preaches. I get good vibes from pastor Steve. He is nice and so is pastor Kevin. I don't remember the women's name because I have only gone once to women's bible study. Lost one star because I feel like the women don't approach me. I'm not sure why but I love making new friends. So that hurts when people don't talk to me hehe. Either than that church is big. My family was very blessed to call Core Church home for the 7 years while we were living in LA - Pastor Steve is a man's man; boldly proclaiming the Gospel of Christ with a genuine compassion for the city of Los Angeles. The pastor is too political. He spent 1/4th of his sermon preaching about how Israel is in danger of retaliating against the Evil ones in Islam; Meaning that if Israel launches a nuclear attack, it is only because they have to in order to purge the world of evil. His point was that they are only defending themselves, but as a Christian, he should know that Israel also failed to turn the other cheek. A righteous man avoids all extremes, but this pastor has picked aside amongst the violence. It sounded like he was even inciting the church to pick the side of Israel as well. As a pastor, and is a church of Christ, we should be impartial to the violence. He acknowledge the wrong that Islam has done, but ignores the evil that Israel has also done. There is no correct side in this war, except the side of Jesus Christ, which urges us to bow down to our masters, and to be slow to anger. At the end of the sermon, he asked the church to pray for Israel because they are sure to launch and attack, and the message was not that "we should be praying for them to stop", but rather it seemed like he wanted the attack to be successful and for us to have pity on their actions, so that the whole world does not turn against Israel as it says in the prophecies of the last days, because he believes that Islam is the evil one and Israel is pure good. The whole sermon was actually filled with American values and such, talking about steak and being against of vegans, And I can see in his tone and his sense of importance for a strong work ethic that he has a strong, American values, but this is not why we come to church. My home church even though I live in the Valley. I knew this was the place to go when I saw the writing on the wall that says, "There's a God in Heaven Who Love's You." Pastor Steve Wilburn is so energetic and passionate about delivering the Word. I have trouble concentrating some times but not at this church with its six LED screens, professional lighting, and sound system. If you want to be strengthened in your walk with the Lord I definitely recommend Core Church LA! read more

The Pastor spoke about the tyranny of vaccines, and YES, it DOES belong in the Church! Why? Because, God is concerned about literally everything we are concerned about on the earth. And, with ANOTHER OUTBREAK of something worse than COVID coming, I think PEOPLE WILL be that much MORE concerned about asking God whether they should take another or not. This is such a spirit filled church. The worship team is good as anyone you heard on the radio and they prepare your heart for the message. Pastor Steve, I've known for years when I was going to Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside and he was the youth pastor. As a matter fact the first time I went to Israel in 2006 Pastor Steve was there with the youth group. Pastor Steve and all the associate pastors are very sincere and genuine. The thing I like most is that Pastor Steve reads directly from the Bible and teaches the word of God without apology. I came to this place with so many wounds and addictions. I never understood the meaning of the church, true fellowship and it's power to encourage you with the unfiltered truth until Core Church. I am beyond thankful for what the Lord has done in my life and those around me. God set me free from drug addiction and gave a new life and a new family. I love "Zeal", their young adults service on Friday nights. It's such a vibrant and loving community of people zealous for the things of God. Pastor Steve teaches the word without fear because he understands the truth stands on it's own. I know they also have an amazing men's Bible study the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month and women's Bible study on Tuesdays. Sundays is where the entire family of believers meets. Pastor Steve is currently going through the book of Psalms on Thursday nights too! (Strongly recommend it) Bring your kids to Sunday school and High school ministry too, They have it all here! Called about Christmas Eve service and asked are there any mask mandates or anything to get in. The fool probably thought I was the CDC, he said well are you a member here? I said no. He says well usually people don't go that aren't members. Wth? I said my sister is and I wanted to take relatives but I was just asking if we need masks, proof of vaccines etc. He said well no we are not asking for vaccine cards and laughed. I find it impossible to get past the enunciation of this preacher. Maybe he is saying something worth hearing but I find myself turning him off once I start listening for any length of time . Maybe I should give him a break because it sound like he may have had a physical problem that affected his speech and addressed through speech therapy. read more

This update is to clarify Luke's review on Core Church. 1) Church feeling "empty" and not a "community." As Luke mentioned, there was a women's retreat when he visited that weekend, that's why the service was a bit empty because close to 200 women were gone (I was one of them). Also, we moved into this building 7 months ago for a much bigger space since the church grew rapidly after 3 years and needed extra space. That's why not every seat is filled yet as we continue to grow. Additionally, I can guarantee you that there's very much a strong community and bond between brothers and sisters at Core (read my original review below). I had no Christian friends before coming to Core, and now I have more Christian friends than non-Christian ones who support me, encourage me, disciple me, pray for/with me along the way. 2) Pastor Steve is pushing one-sided, anti-scientific rhetoric. I'm an Electrical Engineer by degree (UC San Diego), and have been working in high-tech industry since 1996. We also have many scientists, researchers, and people in technology industry coming to Core---many of them PhD's. I love science and technology. From attending Core for the past 4 years, I can tell you that Pastor Steve does not brush science aside but often references scientific evidence of God's existence and His mighty work. He challenges us to think through some of the wild claims we were forced to learn in school such as Evolutionism and the Big Bang theory that contradict how God created the earth with no solid scientific proof. To me, science does not contradict God's design of the universe, rather, it explains it by means of perfect mathematical expressions. Therefore, if Pastor Steve denies science and cannot reconcile science with God's word, I and many others wouldn't have been coming to Core for as long as we have and still love it. Now, Pastor Steve is not a scientist, so you can't expect him to focus his messages completely on how science reconciles with God's word. However, he does invite guest speakers who are experts in those areas to fill that gap. For example, we recently had Pastor Don Stewart, who hosted The Bible Answer Man and Pastor's Perspective, to speak to us and hold a Q&A session. In November, we will have Ken Ham, who debated Bill Nye (the Science Guy) to come and speak to us and give us perspectives on God's word from a scientific point of view. None of us is perfect and no one retains complete knowledge of everything in this world. I am grateful that Pastor Steve recognizes where he falls short and cares for us enough to invite these speakers to come fill the void and answer our questions in areas that he's not an expert of. Thank God for his faithfulness pastoring the flock at Core and for his transparency and humbleness. read more

Being relatively new to Los Angeles, I am still in an 'exploratory' phase where I'm actively searching for 'home' as it relates to church. I went to Core LA this morning knowing little about it, and came away confident that it isn't the right kind of church, at least for me. Here are a few personal observations: 1) The worship is good -- not too loud, not too soft, and not over-the-top (as some churches' worship services in LA can be). For an introvert who enjoys getting into the music and words in his own way, it felt right. 2) The service itself was pretty empty -- I went to the 1230pm, and found out that there's a women's retreat happening this weekend, which could help explain the numbers. Because of the emptiness, however, there was an energy and sense of close community that was noticeably absent. 3) The sermon was energetic, and based well in scripture (some sermons I've heard across LA are a little too surface level for me) -- However, I found that Pastor Steve pushed a little too much one-sided, openly anti-science rhetoric. I find it hard to relate to churches that don't allow science to expand their knowledge of God's skill set and the general scale of creation, but rather brush it aside without consideration. It's the kind of mindset and messaging that I believe makes too many Christians look ignorant. After all, all truth is God's truth. I look forward to continuing my own search, and certainly wish Pastor Steve, the Core team, and the congregation a fruitful future. Next stop: Reality LA. read more

Been coming here for years; however, I'm sad to say that this is not the place for believers to grow in wisdom or for those who need support and not judgement. The music: The worship music is great! Big thumbs up! The messages: The pastor is great for preaching to nonbelievers as well as new believers. Personally I do not find his messages helpful in helping me gain wisdom, I have found other pastors who I deem more helpful such as Pastor Robert Morris of Gateway Church. The support: The church does offer support and counseling, but the church also is not equipped to deal with problems that arise within the congregation. It seems as though people are often shunned after a wrong-doing. I've seen many start coming to Core and accept Christ (thank you Jesus!); however, there have been many leaving as well. Everyone's opinion is different. Give Core Church a try, and see if this is the place for you. read more

I love pastor Steve but NOT the children's ministry teacher ! His preaching really got me closer to god . I was coming here for a few months to the Sunday night service . My son attends the children's ministry for ages 3 and up . He is 3 years old & one of the teachers there on Sunday nights is the reason me & my child no longer attend this church . My son has autism & has a hard time following instructions , I was in the Sunday school room till the service would start & he didn't put his crayons away so I put them away & since I put them away not him ,she didn't give him the play doh cup because she said he didn't deserve it since I put the crayons away , she put him in a chair in the corner for "time out" , she was calling his name but he doesn't respond sometimes due to autism & she then pulled his ear & said hey I'm talking to you in a aggressive tone , I mentioned to her he has autism & she then said "I work with kids like this " . I'm sorry but this is not your work , your here to be a Sunday school helper, lady . She then said I could either leave him & go to the service or Me & him could leave . Best believe that was the last time me & my son ever attended this church which was sad because pastor Steve is a great preacher , thankful for what he got through to me with his teachings . Idk the ladies name I really wish I did , she had darker skin & curly hair & a tattoo on her ankle , slim figure & there was a young girl about 16 or so in the room there with her , but the young girl is always usually In there but she even looked like she felt bad for the way the lady way treating my son . read more

As I look for a new church home that I can go to, volunteer and fellowship I wanted to checkout Core church to see if it was for me. Overall service was great and I love that the church is a bible based church. Friendly on hand staff and volunteers as I made my way in the sanctuary. Praise and worship was awesome and spirit led. Service seemed to go by quick and on schedule. One thing I did notice was I never got the name of the speaker (lead pastor) he never introduced himself. Also my person preference when a pastor is delivering the word reading your whole sermon from your journal makes me feel a certain way. I couldn't tell you what the message was about because the whole time he was reading from his paper head down and arms and gestures moving. Half the time I was wondering if he was putting on a show because his sermon was already prewritten and the other half I was looking at the people around me yawning, and phone scrolling. This Pastor came to my church and he is so inspiring and bible based it was refreshing to have a man on fire for the Lord visit my church. He wasn't selling a book or signing one after service.
