Today my husband and I took a stroll around the fishing lake at Coonskin Park on Hoppy Shores Dr in Charleston, WV We are both Charleston natives and we discussed how much the park has changed in our 60 yrs on earth. The park, especially on a gorgeous 80 degree Sunny Sunday day, would have been jammed pack with bumper to bumper cars cruising through the park. Every field, every table, every inch being utilized BUT not today! Today's generation doesn't like to go outside. A park goes to waste on them. It's a true shame. Tony and I walked around the small groups of people fishing and talking. We saw 2 turtles. I took pics of flowers and the beautiful scenery while our grandson enjoyed the playground with his mother. My only concern is that people are NOT using the trash cans. Pure lazy people! The cans were not full, people just chose not to take the few extra steps to throw stuff away properly!! read more

As a PA native, I never explored all the nooks and crannies of The Mountain State quite like this before. With a name like Coonskin Park, it has to be a great place. I quite like it for the pickle ball courts. The groundhogs, however, despise this place since the lead groundskeeper of the groundhog community left many years ago to audition for the next Punxsutawney Phil role. He won the audition, which meant the rest of the groundhog community had surrendered their power and naming rights to Radical Ringtail, the leader of the Charleston Trash Panda gang. Now putting that totally irrelevant nonsense to the side, we can expect many great things to come from the beautiful views and scenic West Virginia trails. read more

I hear there's a lack of decent public parks for families in this area, but I find this park delivers on so many of its visitors' needs. Entering via Pennsylvania Avenue, within moments you'll come across such a wide range of facilities as an indoor pool, tennis courts, a golf course, children's playgrounds, a lake with a trail and a deck around it, and countless picnic spots and walking trails for families and other visitors. ++ Several trails, most of them lined with trees and running among the water. We took a stroll through the Elk River Trail for about 400 metres, and although a bit rough and eroded in some parts, the path was mostly paved and offered a decent view of the water throughout. Two children's playgrounds next to the parking lots adjacent to the lake, apparently for different age groups. Picnic spots were plentiful and quiet, and all of them had benches and takes with some with bbq facility and a small playground nearby. Free admission, plenty of parking throughout. -- We really wish there were signs that direct visitors to each trail. It took us a long time to find the entrance to one! read more

This is a very big and beautiful park. Great place for family gatherings. I came here with my Mom Just one very important piece of advice Type in the address for your GPS. It gave us a non-entrance on the other side of the river and it took us a long time to find it after driving around and getting lost Great park Many things to do Highly recommended read more

Coonskin Park is one of the highlights of living in the Kanawha valley. We use the walking trails and golf course on occasions and it is a great place for family cookouts. Having the Elk river flowing along side is another feature that increases the beauty. read more

clean, LARGE pool. Separate kiddie pool. Stairs at 2 corners for entry. ZERO concessions, but you can take your own cooler and food. Bathroom toilets, stalls and changing area with lockers and showers. It's like a campground look and feel in the bathroom fyi, needs light remodeling by just new light color paint. It's brown and tan and they scrub the floors before they open and close. Ymca lifeguards and staff. Park police a second away but I have visited this pool since I was little in the 80s and still looks the same. NO CHAIRS! only 10 of wooden platforms that are older than me. The concrete area is very large too. There is grass all around pool and it's usually not cut weekly so there are massive clovers and bees and that is where the parks dept employees and ymca clash in the past. The city of Charleston is not the richest nor poorest and if chairs were bought and added and charged $7 instead of $5 they could keep the pool free of weirdos that I've seen in the past. The pool is SO NICE and it's a shame no nice chairs to have along with it. This pool is located in the park which entrance is 5 minutes from I-79. read more

Coonskin Park is a joke. The pool costs $5 for adults, which is too costly for such a small swimming pool. Also, the website shows the price as $3 for adults. Additionally, golf on the 9-hole, par 3 course is $10. Ridiculous. Leave it to Charleston to gouge people. read more
