I've been going to this place, and taking my 4 kids, for a couple of years now. Today, though...I'm just done with it.
I have, without complaining, paid full adult price for my older daughter's haircuts since we started frequenting Cool Cuts, even though she turned 12 just 3 months ago and still falls into the "12 and under" pricing. The kid has a lot of thick, curly hair that reaches past her shoulders, so I get it. I'll pay the $14.95 instead of the $11.95 kid cut price. I always make sure to tip around 20%.
Today, however- the one time a year I actually get to do so because they're in school for the rest of the year- I took my kids in for $10 Tuesday. Note that the sign on the Cool Cuts window does not say "$10 haircuts on Tuesdays for everyone except people with curly hair." No. It just says "Tuesdays, $10 haircuts." Carol, however, decided that she would charge $13 for my 12-year-old on $10 Tuesday. This without saying anything to us beforehand, or offering any explanation why. She simply told me the price and then stood there, staring at me, almost like she was daring me to challenge her calculations. I don't like making a scene, so I just signed off on the receipt- and yes, tipped 20%.
But the more I thought about it, the more frustrated I became. This is ridiculous. My kids get their hair trimmed every 3 months, without fail. Their hair is in good shape. No mats, no tangles. And it's not like I asked for some complicated haircut for my daughter. All we wanted was a trim. Before we went in, because Carol has complained previously about my daughter's hair being too dry, I deep conditioned her hair and combed it out. I'm basically bending over backwards for a woman who complains and charges me extra. I'm paying you! Why the bad attitude? And why the $13 price tag on $10 Tuesday?
There are other salons in town that have comparable prices and don't discriminate against people with curly hair. I'll be going to those places from now on- and so will my kids.
EDIT 10/7/13: I am going to Cost Cutters now. Their haircuts are $1 cheaper, even though their discount Tuesday is $11 instead of $10 and they stop kid prices at 11 years old and not 12. They don't charge me more because my kids have curly hair. I would definitely recommend Cost Cutters over Cool Cuts. read more
