It smelled musty for only the first couple of seconds upon entering--then it was all good. The bedding was perfect; I wanted to take it home with me. The main floor was either preserved or restored with great care. The best thing may have been breakfast. The innkeeper was very accommodating of my vegetarianism; she asked follow-up questions to make sure I would happily eat my fill. Yogurt and grape nuts in shot glasses! Oreo pancakes! Halloween candy! Plenty of coffee and tea available. Highly recommended!

The owners of that one recommended AC Thomas House. It is indeed a beautiful property, from the spacious veranda and lovely, historically appointed rooms to the perfect downtown New Harmony location. But upon arrival, we learned that it is up for sale. The current owners were nowhere to be found - apparently one is ill and the other is engaged in other projects now. The owners left everything in the hands of one very part-time staff person (you have to call this person if you need anything - there's no one on site). Even under these conditions, with just minimal attention, our stay could have been much improved. For example, they could have put water bottles, tissues, and soap in the rooms (all of these staples were lacking). The breakfast was a big disappointment. The staff asked us in an email what we wanted for breakfast but then did not come through for two of the three people in our party. Minimally, real half-and-half for coffee is essential for any place offering breakfast (they had bought that horrible creamer at the Dollar Store even though we had indicated in the email that we would appreciate half & half). And a box of nice black tea is another essential for a place like this that was lacking. Again, the breakfast issue can be remedied easily enough. The staff person was very nice, and was helpful to the degree possible, but perhaps isn't being given the resources or direction to do these things? Also, there was a baby shower there the day we arrived, and some of that wasn't cleaned up, leaving traces (stray napkins, cups, decorations) in the common areas for the next 24 hours. That, too, can easily be remedied. The larger issue, which hopefully the new owners (when there are some) will attend to is the plumbing. Neither the toilet nor the shower in the Duchess Kate room worked (fortunately the staff person gave us keys to the adjoining room, empty that night, or we would not have had even a working toilet). The showers in all of our rooms need to be brought up to contemporary standards. Hopefully the new owners (when there are some) can remedy these issues and bring this place back to 5 stars, which it richly deserves, but right now, sadly, it is not. Also, not having an inn keeper (or even a more permanent staff person) onsite made it feel more like an airbnb than a Bed & Breakfast. Part of the pleasure of a stay in a place like this is being able to converse with the owners (which I was able to do in the previous place I had stayed).  I'm very disappointed as I had wanted to offer my guests a special weekend. It was still great being in New Harmony, and this place has all the potential to be amazing, and aesthetically it's an absolute treasure - but right now, sadly, I cannot recommend it. The current owners need to step up their game here or stop renting rooms.

No notification. After forcing the Inn's hand they changed the accomodations closer to what they originally had been. The room we stayed in was dirty and lacking in amenities such as towels and soap. They are extremely behind on offering items such as non-allergen soaps. There were dead bugs all over the floor. The crank on the window was broken off. We received a lot of "I don't knows" from the staff. When I arrived home, I did check my credit card activity. At that point after asking them on the first night and on the last day, if any money was owed and told repeatedly that it was not, since they had made the mistake, I found they had charged us more - even though it was unauthorized. I called and have been told the last charge would be reversed. But we will see what happens. This is not a trust worthy or reliable place to visit. Watch out.

Step back in time and experience the Gilded Age…read more Our entire two night, two day stay was extraordinary. Kathy, the Innkeeper, was such a joy to get to know. She served up breakfast each morning with such attention to detail. And her cooking was worth the overnight stay just for the breakfast! Husbands, if you want to impress your wife, book a weekend at The Victorian! The place is filled with antiques, art and living spaces worth exploring. We came to Fairfield on an exploratory genealogy assignment. Lodging at The Victorian on Main took us back to a much simpler time. A time we envisioned how our ancestors may have lived. The truth is, The Victorian on Main, built in 1895, was a mansion compared to the homes of our early agrarian ancestors who lived in Ellery, Illinois just 20 miles away. We felt like honored guest in the home of a close family member.

Right on Main Street in Fairfield, IL stands a grand lady- The Victorian on Main…read more She seems to be a beacon of life and love for her lovely community. One of the longest standing homes in Fairfield, the history and stories she contains are abundant. However, this Victorian is not just a great historical mainstay, but an incredible present and awesome future. The ownership of this grand lady is a family affair- Amy and Scott Boyett, Amy's adorable mom and innkeeper Miss Kathy, Amy's brother and her sister. They have restored and amplified the grandeur of the home. Each room has been designed and filled with amazing furnishings that reflect the past but provide every luxurious modern convenience that you need. During our stay we enjoyed the gorgeous Garden Suite and the Squirrel's Nest. The Garden Suite is located on the second floor. The room is so spacious, plus it has a balcony that over looks Main Street. There are windows across the front of the room, which allows for the perfect amount of natural light. The room also has a bathroom, which they have furnished with STEAM toiletries (so nice!). I loved the cozy king size bed- the pillows and linens were divine. The Squirrel's Nest is located on the 3rd floor. The room is huge. There is a sitting area, which has a very comfortable sleeper sofa. I enjoyed sitting there watching TV, while my daughter worked at the window-facing desk. According to her, it was the perfect workspace. There are lots of windows around the room allowing for lots of natural light. The bed has its own special room- a cozy and imaginatively designed wooden tent. It was created around the attic-like space, and fits perfectly. The room also has its own bathroom. The first floor contains lots of areas to relax and enjoy the company of other guests and Miss Kathy. One of my favorite things about the house was the back staircase. While the front staircase is grand, the back staircase made me feel like the home was mine. Like I knew all of the hidden nooks. To add the icing to our amazing cake of a visit... the breakfast. Miss Kathy serves a delicious buffet style breakfast every morning in the elegant dining room. There are sweet and savory options that are all very pleasing to the palate. During our amazing stay, we enjoyed being able to talk with other guests as well as to Scott and Miss Kathy. Their passion to create a place for people to come and relax really is just the tip of the iceberg. They truly have a heart to care for people. They take the time to create what each guest needs- whether that is a girls' getaway, college visit, or family reunion. They have only been open since July 2019, so they have lots more planned for the property. Jenni and I totally think that you should make your reservation today to have a wonderful stay at the Victorian on Main. I am confident that you will love it and that you will become a return guest, just like us (we are going back in July).
