We started off on a 45 minute tour of the market, familiarizing us with the market layout and history. We had a small ham tasting as well with Serrano vs Iberian ham. The prep was done in various stages with the kids actively preparing the five dishes- gazpacho, tomato garlic toast, Spanish omelette, seafood paella and crème brûlée. There was plenty of white and red wine as well. The experience was not only fun but the people I met were lovely.

The Barcelona Cooking experience consistently landed on lists of things to do and was highly recommend. It wasn't an outrageous cost, booking was simple, and communication was great. We opted for the 4 hour paella cooking class and it was outstanding. The class included a trip to Mercat La Boqueria to shop for the ingredients of our Paella. Our instructor was wonderful in explaining the market and chatting with the vendors. It was like a mini tour within our scheduled class. The class itself was marvelous. We made gazpacho, tortilla espanola, tomato bread, creama catalana, of course the star, paella. We had 12 in our class and everyone had their job in meal preparation and plating. It was a perfect size and the instructor was able to keep us engaged and shift between is to ensure we were staying on task. This is also a very kid friendly event and we had two younger children in a our class and they were great. The meal was wonderful and the wine wine was pouring. Highly recommend class and they even email you the recipes the following day.

We discussed only that morning that a cooking class would be fun, but of course every group we called was booked for the evening. Enter Chef Josh from Barcelona Paella Experience. Unfortunately, he had a busy week and needed to catch up on things that night, but I could tell he was conflicted about whether or not to forego his plans to cook with us. I appreciated that he even considered it, given his busy schedule and that it was for a same-day booking. Luckily, he was able to arrange for another chef that he works with, Chef Andres, to do a private class with us. The experience was amazing! It was definitely the best paella we've ever had and the converted apartment where the class took place was so quaint and personal. Chef Andres was GREAT! Not only did we learn to make delicious sangria, paella, and crema catalana from him, he gave us other cooking tips and grocery/restaurant recs while we were in Barcelona. He has such a relaxed and positive demeanor; it was easy to learn from him. We also really enjoyed being able to sit down and dine with him after we finished cooking the meal. It was a nice change from all the restaurants we were eating at and an overall excellent experience!

It's easy to be tempted to buy yourself (and family/friends) a little souvenir from Barcelona. But if you truly want to take memories of Barcelona home with you, then the best thing you can do is sign up for a cooking class at bcnKitchen. From the very beginning of class, chef Rais welcomed us and the other "students" with cheerful, Catalan hospitality. As a side note, Santa Caterina market - where she took the group to shop for ingredients - is far better than the more popular Boqueria market. The trip to market was a wonderful experience itself as you not only learn about the fundamentals and importance of shopping for fresh ingredients but you also come to appreciate one of the reasons why Barcelona has become such a foodie capital. The setup of the class itself is something I would replicate at home for my next dinner party - getting a group of fun and lively friends, everyone is delegated a task to contribute to the feast, and lots of wine to help everyone relax and enjoy the experience even more. While I may have had some working knowledge of some of the recipes, I truly learned a lot and feel confident that I can take this "souvenir" back home to enjoy with family and friends for many more years to come. Can you say the same about that keychain you bought?
