Didsbury Village

I've been to this West Didsbury salon quite a few times in the past year, and have never been let…read moredown. My stylist is friendly and professional, and always listens to what you're looking for. The salon is relaxing, with good service- drinks, magazines. Price is really reasonable, at about £30 for a cut and blow dry which is great for a reliable stylist. If you want to go somewhere that feels like home, without risking an 'I cut my own hair' disaster, this is a great place. Unlike busy centre of city salons, you can feel really relaxed here, without the sense of being one on a conveyor belt of customers.

Friendly stuff, but will NEVER EVER go there. I took a photo of highlights that I wanted done and…read moreasked Amanda(the colourist) if she can do it. She said yes. I spent 5+ hours there and ended up with a horrible bleach job. The highlights were supposed to get lighter gradually. She just bleached bottom half(from chin down) of ALL of my hair. It looked as if I was wearing a coat with the fur of the lightest golden blonde on my collar. Even though I mentioned 100 times that I wanted ash brown hair and ash blonde highlights, I ended up with very dark reddish brown on top and golden-orangey from chin down and that was just before Christmas. I couldn't get another appointment anywhere else and had to colour my hair twice. Now my hair is dead and I have to cut it:((( Robert did a good job with the cut on that same day. I paid GBP 120 for the highlights and the cut. Bottom line-it is pricey and not worth the money AT ALL!

Didsbury Village

Ashley Brown in Didsbury- Very inexperienced hairdressers. Very poor service as the main guy could…read morenot even style or cut hair accurately. He confirmed during my inaccurate haircut that he does not know how to style hair. It seemed very evidently that he had no qualifications in hairdressing or any training. Initially, I informed the senior stylist and owner that I wanted my hair blow-dried as bouncy curls/waves at the end. As he finished cutting my hair, he began to blow-dry it Then it occurred to me that he was doing it pin straight and not what I had asked - bouncy curls. As I questioned him to why my hair is not being finished in the style I asked for he replied, 'I do not know how to blow-dry bouncy curls, and I will try the curling machine, I haven't used it before but my colleague has.' I could not grasp how a senior stylist charging £51 in Didsbury, Manchester did not know how to blow-dry and style, something I could have done myself at home. Ged, the senior stylist then tried to encourage his colleague, Natalie, who was already dealing with another client, to try and curl my hair using an electric curler as he did not obviously know how. Natalie (the other hairdresser) refused as she already had a client. They both then began to argue and fight, as she demanded that Ged needed to know how to use the curling machine. The argument began to become aggressive where the tension was becoming uncomfortable. I have never encountered such atrocity. As Natalie finished with her client, she stated she would not be available to do the curls on my hair. I had to restate that I wanted my hair blow-dried as bouncy curls. Frustratingly, the both carried on arguing, and then he slapped his colleague. What on earth...? Although Ashley Brown may charge high prices, they are not an established salon with any creative skills and abilities. The senior stylist, Ged, had a fight in the salon with his colleague, Natalie. Lastly, they demanded that I paid £51 for half a job. Ashley Brown - hairdresser? Ashley Brown -fraudsters.

Once upon a time not so long ago I had a work meeting with the regional marketing manager of Vidal…read moreSassoon. The meeting lasted about half an hour and she talked in detail about the science of hair and the "Hair academies" from which a conveyor belt of future Sassoon hair stylists graduated. I suppose in some way l thought credit was due to some random bloke 60 years ago who turned the very simple task of cutting excess hair into some kind of pseudo science. I also appreciate the fact there are variations in facial size/shape and your lid is no different and thus certain styles suit some people more than others. But there was a nagging sense that they'd gone a tad too far with it? The salons felt empty of feeling at the expense of "chique" interior design, there was a coldness, a seriousness about it all. I remember the first time I went to Tony's and told him this particular story. His retort was too expletive ridden for me to repeat here but the narrative carried some weight not to mention incredible comedy value. That particular random visit turned into a bit of a defining moment in my hair grooming life story and I've returned monthly ever since. The barbershop really is one of kind with memorabilia all over the walls relating to Tony's passions, namely cars, football and old school comic strips. It's a film maker's dream and I've suggested it as a location to few friends. There is something deeply addictive about Italian culture and its profound humanism. Tony wears his heart on his sleeve and boy is it a good'un. His stories are both legendary and hilarious. He treats each customer as if they're family but I'd like to think I'm one of his favourites. The cappuccino he makes is sublime and he's a very good listener and hugger. He might not be a graduate from some high end hairstyling academy, but getting your hair cut from Tony's will leave you feeling a million bucks. I can't recommend it highly enough.
