Your rent is low, your council…read moretax is non-existent, your water and electricity have a standard fee meaning you can use as much as you like throughout the year. But if you come to Salford University, we can throw a few more benefits in there. How about, oh, I dunno, getting your kitchen, bathroom and hallway cleaned thoroughly every week and your bins taken away for you? Maybe free parking? You fancy free gym membership including a pool, free student insurance worth £3,500, a free bus service and regular security patrols? Pah. It's nice to be a student isn't it. Just enjoy it, you sods, before you have to face the real world. I lived at John Lester Court for three years and it was brilliant. I'll advise that location-wise it's a bit isolated, not really a party block but perfect for the bookish likes of me who study their little socks off and wind up with a first, thank you very much. Plus, it means you get the best of both worlds - you can visit your Irwell or Horlock-based friends, party with them and then come back to your nice quiet building in the middle of nowhere. Well, not the middle of nowhere actually. The transport links are great, there's a bus stop just over the road, a train station a little further down and it's easy to get from here to anywhere in the university. Many choose this spot due to its proximity to the Health and Social Care faculty so expect to see lots of nurses, but as I've said, it's within walking distance of everything and the free bus service is excellent so it doesn't matter if you're a music student, a literature student or a business student. It's also one of the best options with regard to size - if you have a close friend or partner at the same university you can apply for a two bedroom place (less than £71 a week) with them, meaning you get an incredibly large flat. I spent many a night in that decent sized kitchen concocting recipes that have stuck to this day, and I've never had a bedroom as big as the one I had in John Lester. So if you're the buckling down type, John Lester or Eddie Colman are the choices for you.

The site can boast to being the only University of Salford accommodation to have its own gym and basketball court, as well as being only one of two to have Wi-Fi in room as standard (the other being Bramall Court). A perfunctory glance at the gallery on Jay-Lec's website and you can see the social life seems to be pretty social. Their online calendar includes regular trips to places like Alton Towers, London and the Lake District and their annual Christmas Ball is well attended by most of the University fraternity. If you fancy making your own fun however Jay-Lec is ideally located to connect you to Manchester. There's a transport hub at Salford Shopping City and Tesco Extra around the corner and Salford Crescent train station is within minimal walking distance. On top of all that you're just a 10-minute walk from the main campus on Peel Park, Allerton building is across the road and regular shuttle buses connect students to the up-and-coming Salford Quays and Media City. The only reason this place doesn't get 5/5 for me is because the nearest pub, The Crescent, is a fifteen-minute walk away (or two minutes on the free bus).

As you may or may not be aware, Castle Irwell, John and Eddie, Bramall and Matthias, Horlock and Constantine, they're all old. Like, well old, man. Probably older than you and I put together. But iQ? It's new. And boy, do you know it's new. This was built almost four years ago right opposite the Pav and Castle Irwell, almost mocking their dilapidated paint-peeling status with its bright and shiny exterior. It manages to look homely as opposed to purpose built with its uber modern frontage resembling an actual contemporary block of flats instead of, y'know, a council tower block or university building. When I was a tour guide for the university we used to take a busload of visitors here, and a busload to Castle Irwell. You always knew which was which at the end of the tour, just pick out the smiles from the confused frowns and cries of desperation - 'Don't take my baby!' - and you have your iQ ganderers. This spot offers 541 rooms, all ensuite. Yes, you betcha. There are even a number of 'deluxe' rooms available that have larger beds (hello dates and spouses from neighbouring universities, you've got somewhere to crash) and with only 4-6 students sharing anyway, it's not like you're going to be cramped compared to say the likes of Horlock, Constantine and Irwell. As for the social aspect, there's a large common room with Sky TV and vending machines where you can chill with friends, and every apartment is decked out with brand spanking new IKEA furniture. While the other university accommodations offer blank canvases, a little bit of design has gone into the iQ Centre. Goodness me, you can tell it's privately owned can't you. We don't do luxury here at Salford, darnit, we're for real! The rent is £95 a week for deluxe, £90 for standard, and less if you're staying longer than 40 weeks. On site there's even a Subway, a fried chicken joint and a Tesco Metro to meet your hungry needs. Talk about the lap of luxury. Well, it seems at Salford we do have somewhere that little Penelope and Tarquil can stay safely now, don't we? A parent-pleaser all round.

That would be the case if it was well maintained and not left to degrade following 4 years of student miss-use... IKEA furniture? Yes too right, filthy engrained dirt covered IKEA furniture...yum! They wll sort this and the filthy carpets of course.....NO. This is the first day of a new Septemeber term in Sept 2012, after they have been closed for a few weeks rejuvinating the property. By the way, I am the father of a student staying there, after thinking that this was a fantastic place for my offspring to attand, yeah right! The staff, well they cant do enough for you, well thats what they tell you and all the others complaining....take a ticket!

Not as isolated as the apartments nor as bonkers as Castle Irwell, this campus-based hall of residence enjoys such close proximity to the main university buildings that students can fall out of bed and into lectures within minutes. While students don't have the luxury ensuites of Constantine, they each have a washbasin in their room and the twelve-bedroom houses can be home to 168 university-dwellers. Again, Horlock's selling point is definitely its central location. It occupies the same square as the Blackwells bookshop, the HSBC bank and the cute little general store that sells the Hershey and Reece's stuff. There's a pretty campus green just outside too which leads to Constantine, its sister hall, and like all Salford accommodation gym membership and broadband internet are included free of charge along with a weekly cleaner, a launderette, out of hours support, security and content insurance. The problem here is that car parking is far from free, due to the campus location. Remember, the staff have to park there too. Horlock's an undergraduate only block and it's definitely a great starter for first years. The large houses mean it's easy to make friends and if you wind up with great housemates, you can get involved in bonding activities such as taking turns in cooking and sharing meals. A bit of a tip here - everyone turns up with a toaster and a kettle, so you might want to hold off on those unless you're planning on grilling teacakes and making brews in your room whilst still under your duvet. Horlock's a classier choice than Castle Irwell if you want a more university-centric halls of residence experience.

Well, occasionally I do find myself being praised, honoured or having a hit put out on me by the companies I've reviewed, no doubt they find me through this trending topics new-fangled thing. Anyway, I'd referred to Bramall in one of my reviews and was told that if I thought Bramall was quiet I obviously hadn't been there lately. Maybe I was thinking of Matthias, the postgraduate haven amongst the madness. Okay, so here's the deal. I visited Bramall in my undergraduate heyday and it was similar to John Lester and Eddie Colman (flats of 2, 3 or 4 sharing), which to me meant it was fairly low-key. But then I remembered a significant difference. Students living in Bramall kept their front doors open. Not even unlocked, actually wide open so that interlopers could walk in. As a paranoid antisocial, that's like my worst nightmare, but the idea was to open up these isolated little flats, make friends and have parties. Well, can't fault them for trying. Matthias however is understandably a little bit more subdued. Postgraduates are a different breed; after all, those who stay on at university longer than is necessary often have a mixture of smarts, idealism and insanely misguided dreams. Or they've just been harangued by their lecturers like I was. They knuckle down, they read a lot. Matthias even offers solutions for postgraduates in couples and/or with families so you know life there is going to be a great deal more civilised and a lot quieter. Both blocks benefit from all those classic Salford Uni accommodation perks I've discussed previously, and Bramall particularly attracts a lot of Music, TV, Media and Drama students due to its close location to the Media, Music and Performance campus at Adelphi. And if you live there, the Pint Pot's your local. Can't really fault that. So for optional privacy with more of a party atmosphere than the Lesters and Colmans of the Salford University world, make Bramall Court your choice. For postgraduate reflection and concentration, you're best off with Matthias.

Such a mix of 'free-thinkers' has meant that over a period of fifty years a somewhat 'chilled' atmospheres has evolved at Bramall, between staff and student alike, and at this place you'll feel more like a family member than a tenant. In recent years Bramall may have lost some of its more decadent charms, from 2011 annual renovations have been made; re-fitted showers and carpets, wi-fi installed in each room and in the summer 2013 the building had an entire face-lift! If you are a free spirit who also loves their mod-cons then this is the one stop shop for you! Vital stats: Bramall is on the doorstep of Adelphi Campus, Media City bus-stop nearby, and most importantly 5 minutes from the Old Pint Pot pub and the Crescent!

When I reached out to them to report the many issues, they took a long time to re and then said that the quality of the apartment was just due to wear and tear. The apartment and building were in such bad condition we couldn't even stay there. The did not offer a credit, refund or even acknowledge the problem. Terrible customer service !

If i could give a zero star then that's what I would give these people…read more Booked for 6 colleague's to stay in their apartment in Chelmsford, got there just 2 single beds !! the place had holes in the walls absolutely stank, some ones washing in the machine the vacuum cleaner just left where it was dropped the balcony was covered in pigeon mess, it was just about the worst place they had seen absolutely nothing liked described it was horrible. they refused to stay there it was that bad. complained to pass the property to be given the usual rubbish charlatans spew and none of the £670 was refunded. STAY AWAY FROM ANY THING THESE PEOPLE OWN DO NOT BOOK UNDER ANY CURCUMSTANCES. Just check google reviews I wish i had they don't deserve your money.
