Such as a bright orange Eames reproduction chair - hey, what is this place? It's the Banana Lab, a hidden treasure trove of mid-century modern furniture and little design-y things. Hidden in plain sight, really, as it's just across the street from a Yelper fave, Big Star Sandwich. Frankly, I'm heartened there's now another MCM-focused vintage store in town! Packed into the Lab's small space is a number of nifty teak sideboards, record cabinets, chairs and other Danish modern furnishings and housewares for my soon-to-be groovier living room. Prices compare favourably to the *other* MCM store, and the proprietors here seem really nice and friendly and enthusiastic about their wares.

There's plenty of mid century furniture to choose from and upon inspection of some of their refinished items, they do an incredible job. Like with vintage and hard wood furnitures, some of the pieces are not cheap but they're unique and will last a long time. The other plus to this store is their kitschy (and sometimes original) art pieces and tchotchkes. I prefer this place to the shop in the Quay so I'll most likely come back as a few items tweaked my fancy (especially the sunburst table) and I'll be sure to let people know about this place.

Well made items on the higher end in price and finishing, these pieces will last. Unfortunately while downstairs an over the dining room table light that was basically a lit circle with a long skinny lit rod going through it was about to slip off and luckily my gf was there to help try to put it back but had a hell of a time balancing the darn thing! A very rude salesman came running over and raised his voice at her saying "why would you touch that?!" My poor gf tried in disbelief to explain what was happening but the man was so rude he didn't even apologize! We left in disbelief that an employee would react so unprofessionally! I believe that employees are just as important as the brand or company they represent and this was in no way reflective of the beautiful furnishings inside the store. This is why I'm giving them one star. An apology would have been nice.

On my recent visit, many items were tagged with extremely reasonable sale prices in the same price bracket as those stores that hawk boring cookie-cutter pieces. They also have a website in which you can browse through their collection and later ring them to hold for you (as they understandably don't hold everything in-store). And the other useful services they offer are upcycling your used furniture and a finding service in which you can submit photographs of what you're looking for and have the store help you in your search. Very nifty! Overall, L'Atelier offers extensive services and a remarkable array of home decor, and the people have never failed to provide excellent hospitality. This is definitely one of my favourite shops in the area for all these reasons!
