VFW Post 2801 - Fish fry on Fridays for lent, packs them in.

VFW's bring up childhood memories of cranky old men complaining about the war. At least that is…read morehow they seemed where I grew up. This place is anything but cranky old men complaining about the war. My first experience here was completely surprising. I came for the Friday fish fry with my father and the nugget, who was a baby at the time. During Lent, this place is PACKED with people on Friday nights. I could not believe it. While waiting for my fish to arrive, I got a glass of wine at the bar. I thought I misheard the price...nope I didn't...it was soooo cheap compared to a bar or restaurant. After I bit into a nice meaty piece of fried fish, I was hooked (buh duh cha). The fish fry continues all year long...not just during Lent. Don't like fish, no problem. They have Italian Beef sandwiches, hot dogs, and fried shrimp. The price of your meal also includes coffee, and cake for dessert. You can't go wrong. Don't forget to bring some cash for the raffles. They usually do a 50/50 raffle, and some other thing. For Valentine's Day there was a delicious pork dinner and a band. For St. Paddy's they do a corned beef dinner. High suggested! Tuesday is Bingo and Thursday is wing night. There is almost always something going on here. Check it out!

At long last I found the perfect place for my birds. Having to move to Australia for work was an…read moreexciting and life changing event for me, but that meant that I had to find the right care for my little ones. A friend recommended GCCBC. They are a volunteer organization that care for and provide adoption and boarding services for birds. I have not gone anywhere else since. For my birds meeting Diane and team and the extended family of birds was love at first sight. After my travels, I noticed that my birds were the happiest I have ever found them. This place is a life saver not only for the abandoned and orphaned birds but also for for all of us that to trust just anyone our birds. I consider the place home away from home for Sona and Danae and a true gift for my family.

This time was very different. We were greeted by "do you have an appointment"; no hello, good morning, nothing. I had a large cage in my hand. When I explained that I had arranged with one of their staff to donate, they didn't seem to know what to do. One manager was apparently there, but he was on the phone and didn't have time for us. They finally had us put everything on the floor. After a moment of awkward silence we just left. I drove an hour to donate many supplies, but left feeling like they thought it was an intrusion. Not a very welcoming place.

My parents lived in Lombard, and I went there a few years ago several times when I was in town…read morewhile my mother was dying. The quality of the meetings are sketchy, which should be expected with a club, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of people there with long term sobriety. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be a very friendly place, and they don't like non-members. I was in town with my girlfriend (Who has 12 years of sobriety herself), and we were out running errands for my parents, and decided to hit a meeting before going back to my parents. We got there about an hour early for the meeting, and the guy that was there let us in. We were having a very pleasant conversation with him about sobriety, when a woman showed up and introduced herself as the President of the club, and asked if we were members. When we said no, she informed non-members weren't permitted in the building until 30 minutes before, and after a meeting. We didn't argue with her, but did attempt to explain we were in from out of town, and hoped she'd be understanding because it was winter, and didn't know where to hang out for the 15 minutes or so until their 30 minute rule. She was insistent that we leave, and informed us "rules are rules", and was very condescending, and phony with her attempts to be friendly. We left as she asked, but decided to go back to my parents and skip a meeting there. If you wind up at this place for meetings, all i can say is don't expect a very warm welcome unless you're a member.
