Although it's an orthodox congregation, people are very welcoming to Jews of all affiliations and levels of observance and won't give you a hard time if you happen not to have a strong Jewish education/background, or drive on Shabbat, or don't wear a black hat. Rabbi Epstein's learner's service on Saturday mornings at 10am is perfect for those looking for a more simplified service, with lots of explanation, parsha discussion, and some prayers in English. Definitely worth visiting for Jews of any affiliation.

They encouraged people not to wear masks at church 2. They encouraged people not to be vaccinated 3. They arranged large indoor Christmas choirs (yes, in Christmas 2020 when 3,000 Americans daily were dying of COVID) How to explain this? Did the leaders *want* to increase COVID death and suffering? Seems unlikely. My guess is they simply care more about themselves (for example: church attendance, tithes, or political ideologies) than they care about the vulnerable people in their communities.

Pastor Matt Chandler is a gifted messenger. Generally, he is videoed in from his campus in Flower Mound, and the other campuses, including Plano, tune in the same way. There is a local pastor who will also speak and also preach, but the majority of the time for now, you will hear Chandler. The truth is powerful, and so is the delivery. A few things to prepare you for your visit: Yes, the church is large. There are multiple services throughout Sunday, we generally attend the 11:15. You do want to arrive 15-30 minutes early to park. People flock to the church, which is a huge blessing and a huge testament to God's work here, but it also means parking gets crowded and you may have to park in the remote shuttle lot if you're not there in time. There is child care - and lots of children and happy families here. The congregation is young - ranging from college kids to young professionals and families. But you won't feel completely out of place is you're above the median age of 25 - we are in our late 20s and mid 30s, my husband and I, and this is a great place for us. The music / worship service is impactful and inspiring. Last week we sung half of our songs in Spanish to reach out to the Spanish speaking community, and particularly to love the visiting in-laws of a staff member who were there from Mexico. They care about connection and about spreading the Gospel very much. I read in another review that it can be hard to meet people. This is completely true. People attend in packs, and they seem to sit and stick together. I've actually only been reached out to by one very kind girl who chatted my husband and I up before service a few weeks ago. And the pastor has introduced himself and welcomed us. We've been visiting for about 4 months now consistently and haven't established any consistent faces to know, mostly because it's so large and many already know each other. We can and will do more to establish relationships, but I do wish that covenant members would be encouraged to extend themselves when they see new faces. We'll be taking the steps to Connect with a life group next, which will help establish some steady local Christian relationships in our lives and we're excited to do so. The Village Church has been a blessing to us, and, again, I would encourage anyone to visit! I'd even be happy to meet you there! :)

One of the best things I've learned from preachers is to make sure every sermon speaks to the person who's never gone to a church and may never go again. At the end of the service they did ask if there was anyone wanting to "take that step for the first time", but there was nothing in the sermon that would have encouraged them to do so. God was brought up maybe twice, so the sermon gets 2 stars, the 3rd star is for benefit of the doubt. Personally, I did not feel spiritually fed. Maybe just bad timing. *But nobody talked to us, even though we came early, so the sermon is all I have to go on.

I attended Upper Room for the first time last night for the 5PM Sunday service. I have to say, my…read moregreatest take away was the Worship. It was really lovely to see people worshipping The Lord with no boundaries and no care for what others think - just true authentic worship. With that said, there are a few things that set off alarm bells for me. 1 of them being the save seats culture here, we arrived 30 min early and people had ENTIRE rows saved. If I had been a first-time church goer, this would absolutely make me stay away from church. It was SO discouraging to see people saving seats in mass quantities, it came off very cliquey and NOT of The Lord. Church should be like a welcoming place for everyone. Secondly, the way in which tongues are spoken and encouraged felt like a huge red flag. The way tongues were being spoken - did not align with the bible in ANYWAY. I fully believe in the gifts of the spirit, but it felt like the singers were just shouting them out all willy nilly and it didn't feel genuine. It felt like it was being used as a way to draw attention to themselves. When it was time for an alter call, one of the singers encourage everyone to make sounds and speak in tongues to the Lord. This is promoting a very unhealthy practice. Not everyone has this gift and as it states in the bible - if done in public, there should be a translator. Lastly, I realize that the normal pastor was not preaching this day but the man who did preach probably gave the absolute worst sermon Ive ever hear. It was basically him ranting for an hour about how you need to keep your eyes on jesus. And while i greatly appreciated the basis of the message. there was no scripture and he was ALL OVER THE PLACE...telling stories that didnt tie back into the general message. If someone had come to church, hungry for the word of God.. they wouldnt have recieved it and that is a huge problem. Not to mention him saying that Jesus dying on the cross for our sins was not the whole gospel.... I'm sorry what? I truly believe God is moving in this place but I also believe this entire congregation is promoting a feelings-based relationship with God and that is so dangerous.

The pastor, a pasty-looking bald fellow in his early sixties flashes a radiant smile without which Christian joy is apparently impossible and warns visitors that there's a lot of hugging going to happen, so I put on a scowl that I hope will alert my fellow parishioners that such caresses are unwelcome. I forget most of the rest of what happened. Everything just sort of dissolved into a miasma of feel-good bathos and non-judgmental, beatifically smiling, ecumenical, vaguely Christian horseshit. Until the end of the service -- and I'll never forget this. At the end of the service, the pasty pastor gets up and joins hands with a circle of congregants, and clenching his eyes shut, he says fervently: "We WILL a better Africa." Looks like it worked, Dr. Schmaltz.

I will have to go back to meet her as well. I am not a churchgoer and it is not my religion but I appreciate the deep meaning that this church has for so many of its congregation. I am fortunate to know the family who is probably most responsible for keeping this church-going when they could desperately use new members. This is the reason why this spiritual but non-Christian fellow is reviewing this great church. They have many events throughout the year and you can learn such things as mosaics. It's a classic old church building with lots of character and they usually leave the doors open up front on gorgeous days. They have a guy who does their music who plays the piano and has a great voice while leading the congregation in song. Everyone is welcome and I do enjoy that Spirit of openness and warmth. If you're looking for a church I hope that you will consider Bethany Christian Church as a place to spend your Sundays and the other opportunities they offer for building community and strengthening the heart.
