I was visiting the area from the Diocese of Fresno, and I attended this parish as a visitor…read more Recognizing that "they do things differently" there is not a sufficient criticism, there were a few things that made me doubt the orthodoxy of this parish. First, the design of the church. The seats had no kneelers, and nobody kneeled during the consecration. In addition, one of the first things I do when I enter a new church is to look for the tabernacle so that I can genuflect toward the reserved sacrament; it must have been there (it was a Catholic church, after all), but for the life of me I could never find it. My most serious concern was the behavior of the parish administrator during the mass, a religious sister, not a priest. The priest is in the place of Christ during the mass, and should be focus. This sister stood on the altar podium during the entire mass, drawing a second center of attention from the priest. She led most of the prayers from there. It felt like I was watching a tug-of-war between her and the priest. More disturbing, at one point she modified the words of the Roman Missal to make them more "inclusive" (and presumably more in line with her personal preferences). (She changed the prayer, "May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands .. and the good of all his holy Church" to "May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands ... and the good of all God's holy Church."). I understand what she was doing, and I'm sorry, but the words of the mass are not hers to change.

It is my honor to do the first review of Life Church, Albany…read more Welcome to Church in the 21st century. Life Church goes out of there way to keep you connected to God in every way possible. Here are the many benefits to Life Church: First and foremost every aspect of the service is about God and learning through his word. There is no hooplah i.e. Benny Hinn. The sermon is virtual. The lead pastor is video taped and his sermon is broadcast all over the world and during life church services. You can access his sermon anywhere and at anytime from the Life Church App. Pastor Craig's sermons are always thoughtfully delivered with passion. He is one of the best I have ever heard and witnessed. He also preaches based on a theme or series which is intended to relate to our current world. The music at this church is absolutely amazing. Every week feels like a live concert. I am a musician and I am always impressed by the passion and musicality. The sound system, TV screens and lighting is also state of the art. Some serious $ was invested. On the life church app you can stay in touch with Life Church, provide your offerings, read the bible and connect with small groups of which there are many and are located all over the capital region. I should also mention the people that volunteer on Sunday are awesome as well. They always offer a smile or a wave. Parking attendants, ushers, hospitality (they provide coffee, snacks, juice) work very hard and everything runs seamlessly. If you are looking for something new or are looking to reconnect with God this may be an awesome church to do that.

The music was top notch but the message was all about, " if you don't give 10% of my wages to the church then your not following Gods word"!!! Yes, I do believe in giving to the church. But during a time, when people are having a hard enough time just putting food on the table, this message was wrong. You are making people feel, that if they don't contribute 10%, then they are not living according to Gods word! Thats wrong!

But, the best part of the service for me was the sermon. Actually, I'm far more interested in the message than I am in the welcoming atmosphere. This is a great conservative congregation…read more When my family arrived in the area, we weren't sure if we would be more comfortable joining a reform or conservative congregation. Back in Berkeley we were at a reform temple that used mostly Hebrew during worship, and was led by an old school Hungarian rabbi. The clergy at Ohav are fantastic. Loved Rabbi Dan. Love that the congregation shows off its egalitarian stripes with Rabbi Rena on the bima. Services were always kid friendly, from little toddlers all the way through fidgety grade schoolers. And we found it to be a warm and welcoming community. In the end, we decided our family was ultimately more comfortable being on the more religious side in a reform congregation, than the slackers in a conservative one. But this place still holds a warm spot in our heart, and it's an active and thriving part of the local Jewish community.
