Mayfair Lutheran Church has been serving in the Mayfair neighborhood on the North West side of…read moreChicago on Lawrence just East of Elston and West of Pulaski for over 80 years. If you go to any of the neighborhood meetings, like the Improver meeting at Gompers Park or North Park Village nature center you will meet someone that attends Mayfair Lutheran. The members of the congregation really care for the neighborhood and for the people that live in the neighborhood. The service is a typical ELCA Lutheran service with confession or thanksgiving for baptism at the beginning of the service, followed by the lessons, followed by a sermon (and the pastor has engaging sermons - just read a few on the website), then communion and a blessing and sending. If you grew up in any main line protestant or Catholic church you will not have a problem following the service and the service is easy enough to follow and engaging enough if you do not have a church back ground. And, Sunday School is during the service. The children are dismissed from the service right before the reading with the congregation singing "Jesus Loves Me" and they return for communion. The people are beyond friendly. You will be greeted and welcomed, but not in an overwhelming way. And, there is a fellowship after the service where the people of the congregation will sit and really and to get to know you. And, from some of the mailing that the church is sending out and the new signs promoting the food pantry they host every second wednesday it is obvious that the church is having a new wind going through them. They are trying new things and reaching out to the community more.

My son asked me to join him for Shabbas. I'm glad I did. They were very hospitable. I immediately felt comfortable. They continue to teach us about Judaism without pushing their observances on us. They accept us where we are on our journeys. My friend is not Jewish and they are just as warm and open with him. He isn't a fan of a lot of people, but he likes them so much that he comes and helps out with events. They are truly genuine loving open-hearted people. Their children are awesome - they are just a beautiful family. I would recommend this Chabad to anyone looking for a warm loving community with so many resources, meaningful holidays, and fun events for the entire family!

The pastor, Huu, was very kind and had a 'Children's Sermon' for the kids to do a daily lesson about Jesus and improve in their Christian life. The band played nice soft music during the service and it was great! I sure will be coming back here sometime!!
